In such an environment, pricing power is crucial to a firm's success, says Kevin Dreyer. One of the qualities that makes a company attractive to them is strong pricing power: being able to hold prices steady in tough times or even raise them as inflation surges. "I don't tend to think of private label firms as having the best pricing power out there, but that said, what Treehouse has done is pretty unique," he said. The third firm Dreyer talked about was BellRing Brands (BRBR), which owns protein snack brands like PowerBar and Premier Protein. Dreyer also thinks they're a good candidate to be acquired by a larger firm at a premium.

The firm raised its price target from $800 to $1,100 — a new high among Wall Street analysts — after the chipmaker beat second-quarter estimates and issue optimistic guidance. Rosenblatt had already hiked its price target heading into this week . The new price target implies more than 133% upside from Wednesday's close. Analyst Hans Mosemann described Nvidia's AI growth story as "the mother of all cycles." However, he forecasts constraints lifting in 2025, which would then raise the company's earnings per share power to a degree not reflected in the current valuation — and justifying the price target increase.

"A rise in 10-year rates, has historically been devastating for consumer and consumer discretionary stocks," he said. "With the 10-year breaking above 4.25%, we are seeing all those consumer discretionary stocks that have had big years pull back sharply." For Stutland, that consumer strength is keeping him bullish on the stock market and U.S. economy in general — but not consumer discretionary stocks. "I'm staying away from the lower market cap weighted stocks and consumer discretionary from those apparel type brands," he said. "As a whole, consumer discretionary stocks to invest in are narrowing.

When it was raising fresh money from investors in 2020, one slide on the pitch deck for the hedge fund Schonfeld Strategic Advisors got to the heart of the issue: "Why Schonfeld?" A hedge fund recruiterAmid the weakness, the fund has begun to prune costs. Steve Schonfeld (class of 1977) and Brad Tolkin (class of 1976) attended Roslyn High School in Roslyn Heights, New York. Tolkin told Insider in 2019 that the firm's goal was no less than becoming "the premier equities hedge fund globally." CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. That's called the equity risk premium, a return that's supposed to compensate stock investors for the chance that they might lose money. Another potential issue that could crop up with high Treasury yields is that it could make the Federal Reserve's job tougher. It wasn't a surprise, then, that stock markets fell Tuesday.

Nvidia is slated to post fiscal second-quarter earnings after the bell Wednesday. The report could also send ripples through the entire stock market . Nvidia is far and away the best-performing S & P 500 member this year, up more than 200% in that time. "There were a lot of investors who got nervous as Nvidia was selling off and correcting in July. There are also concerns that this may be an overly crowded trade, which could prime it for a decline if Wednesday's report underwhelms Wall Street.

Opinion | America Is Losing Religious Faith

While much of the rest of the industrialized world has become more secular over the last half-century, the United States has appeared to be an exception. Politicians still end their speeches with “God bless America.” At least until recently, more Americans believed in the virgin birth of Jesus (66 percent) than in evolution (54 percent). Yet evidence is growing that Americans are becoming significantly less religious. For the first time in Gallup polling, only a minority of adults in the United States belong to a church, synagogue or mosque. (Most of the research is on Christians because they account for roughly 90 percent of believers in the United States.)

Despite Amazon's strong year-to-date gains, Wedbush thinks the company's core segment is underappreciated. Wedbush now, however, thinks Amazon has turned a meaningful corner. The firm also highlighted the growth of Amazon Web Services, which Wedbush says could accelerate further in 2024 while "a strengthening digital advertising backdrop" will "should support continued growth in the company's high-margin advertising business."

China is being hit by a "debt supercycle" that began with the 2008 financial crisis, Kenneth Rogoff said. While Beijing has a strong record of containing economic fires, today's crisis of slowing growth and high debt is unprecedented, he added. "The debt supercycle may have lasted longer than initially expected, perhaps because of the pandemic. But it was a critical piece of the story, and now, as China's economy falters, it is the best explanation for what might come next," he later added. Trouble for China's economy could stretch on over the long-term as it faces poor growth prospects, experts have warned.

Analyst Hans Mosesmann lifted his price target on the chipmaker to $800 from $600 a share, reflecting 82% upside from Tuesday's close. "With unmatched strengths in compilers, libraries, and vertical optimizations, NVDA can overcome hardware specification challenges and drive recurring software revenue streams," Mosesmann wrote in a Wednesday note. Why TV news executives are having a brutal year in 2023

In his place, CBS announced Monday that Wendy McMahon will be chief executive and president of CBS News, the network’s local stations, and CBS Media Ventures. The formidable task is reflective of the extraordinary challenges traditional media outlets are facing amid a period of rapid and existential change to their business models and advertising woes. Increasingly, there is no longer a single powerful media executive tasked with solving for the less-than-ideal set of circumstances. The industry veteran noted that there is less of a focus on making splashy — perhaps at times risky — moves to build for the future among the C-suite ranks. Instead, there is a mounting emphasis on slashing costs to best position the mammoth media companies for the inevitable decline of linear television.

The trains from Tel Aviv were packed one evening last month when Inbal Boxerman, a 40-year-old mother of two, was blocked by a wall of men as she tried to board. One of them told her that women were not allowed on — the car was for men only. It was a public train operated by Israel Railways, and segregated seating is illegal in the country. The men stopping her appeared to be protesters going home from a rally supporting the governing coalition, which includes extremist religious and far-right parties pushing for more sex segregation and a return to more traditional gender roles. “I said, ‘For real?’” said Ms. Boxerman, who works in marketing.

For the first time in Israel’s history, all 15 of its Supreme Court justices will crowd onto the bench on Sept. 12 to hear a case together. The reason: This one is so momentous that it could not only decide the powers of the court itself but also kindle a constitutional crisis. The 15-member court — which meets in a graceful building of beige stone, straight lines and arches on a hill in Jerusalem alongside Parliament — includes secular liberals, religiously observant Jews and conservative residents of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. One justice is an Arab Israeli; six are women, including the court’s president. Many Israelis fear that the overhaul will weaken the court as a check on the government, currently the most right-wing and religiously conservative in Israeli history; accelerate a rightward shift of the judiciary that started almost a decade ago; and make it more politicized and less independent.

Examining overbought or oversold stock levels could be helpful signals for investors looking to add or reduce exposure in a position. When evaluating these names, Bespoke reviewed the standard deviations above or below each stock's 50-day moving average. If a stock is one or more standard deviation above its 50-day moving average, it's classified as overbought. If it's more than one standard deviation below its 50-day moving average, it's oversold. Two or more standard deviations away from the 50-day moving average is classified as an "extreme" overbought or oversold reading.
