The Republican supermajority in the Louisiana State Legislature pushed through a bill this year banning gender-transition care for minors, along with other legislation banning Covid vaccine requirements in schools and any classroom discussion of gender identity and sexual orientation. It was the kind of aggressive social policy agenda that has gained traction in conservative states across the country. The reason: John Bel Edwards, the lone Democratic governor in the Deep South. He has used vetoes with some success as a bulwark against conservative legislation in a state where Republicans have had a lock on the legislature for more than a decade. In Louisiana, governors have a history of successfully wielding vetoes; most years, lawmakers have not even bothered trying to override them.

In April, Iowa's senate voted to pass a bill that would allow teenagers to serve alcohol. Legislators in Wisconsin are pushing to lower the alcohol service age from 18 to 14 years old. In April, Iowa's Republican-led state senate voted 32-17 to pass a bill rolling back child labor laws in the state. The bill would allow teens to work until 9:00 p.m. during the school year and until 11:00 p.m. over the summer and serve alcohol. The restaurant industry is backing legislators in their efforts to loosen child labor laws, according to the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute.

New York CNN —More states are letting teenagers serve alcohol at bars and restaurants, part of a growing rollback of child labor protection laws across the United States. The restaurant industry already has the highest number of child labor law violations, according to the Economic Policy Institute. Efforts to lower alcohol serving ages are part of a larger push to loosen child labor protections in states around the country. Federal laws providing minimum protections for child labor were enacted nearly a century ago. But in the past two years, at least 14 states have introduced or passed laws rolling back child labor protections, the Economic Policy Institute reports.

Sen. JD Vance introduced a bill to criminalize providing certain treatments to transgender minors. Other Republican senators told Insider that they're open to the idea as well. Asked about potentially harmful effects on transgender people who are already receiving care, Vance conceded that the bill is largely a messaging device for now. "But it doesn't have any effect on the capacity of people to receive this care if they're adults. An initiative by freemasons called the Georgia Child Identification Program states it helps parents collect basic information about their children in an identification kit in case they were to go missing. Like many of my colleagues, I’ve been holding my breath for the last year, since HRA Pharma, which manufactures Opill, submitted its application to the F.D.A. We now have hope that other advances could be coming to help offset restrictions on minors’ access to contraception and state-level abortion bans. under President George W. Bush approved Plan B for over-the-counter sale, but only for people 18 or older. Because of the age restriction, the product was shunted behind the pharmacy counter, where the consumer’s age could be confirmed. asked Plan B’s sponsor for additional data on people 17 and younger to show the product could be used safely and effectively by adolescents.

BRUSSELS, July 19 (Reuters) - The European Commission should better protect children with stricter consumer rules for digital coins and videogame loot boxes, the Dutch government said, according to a discussion paper seen by Reuters on Wednesday. The EU executive late last year sought feedback on whether to overhaul the existing EU consumer law for the digital world. The Dutch said an area of concern was increasing digital coins usage for paying in an app or in videogames, with children as the most vulnerable to this practice. "This is exacerbated by the fact that software developers can change the value of digital coins and can offer different digital items in one app." "Loot boxes have a high potential to distort the economic behaviour of consumers.

CNN —A 3-year-old driving a golf cart struck and killed a 7-year-old on Monday afternoon in Fort Myers, Florida, according to a news release from the Florida Highway Patrol. Concerns about minors driving golf carts in Florida recently prompted the passage of a new state law, CNN affiliate WJFX reported. Anyone under the age of 18 will soon need to have a permit or driver’s license to drive a golf cart, the station reported last month. It doesn’t state an age when minors become eligible to start driving golf carts but does state all minors must have a permit or driver’s license to legally drive a golf cart in Florida. Across the country, more than 6,500 children are hurt by golf carts every year, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

INM/Handout via REUTERSMEXICO CITY, July 16 (Reuters) - Mexican authorities on Sunday said they intercepted over 500 migrants in two days in the eastern state of Veracruz as authorities crack down on the transportation of migrants toward the United States in unsafe conditions. The town's mayor Roberto Montiel wrote on Facebook that "over 180" migrants were found, including women and children, with some of the migrants presenting signs of dehydration. Earlier on Sunday, the INM reported in a statement that authorities had intercepted 303 migrants in two operations on Friday morning in Veracruz. Also on Friday, authorities found 196 migrants, including 19 unaccompanied minors, packed into an improperly parked tractor-trailer detected on a road close to the city of Fortin de las Flores. Five of the migrants were adults from Guatemala and another five adults from India, the INM statement said, without providing further details on the other migrants' nationalities.

An expansion of the criteria for medically assisted death that comes into force in March 2024 will allow Canadians like Pauli, whose sole underlying condition is mental illness, to choose medically assisted death. In 2021, the most recent year available, 10,064 people died through medically assisted death, about 3.3% of deaths in Canada that year. Dembo served on an expert panel on assisted death and mental illness that presented a report to Canada's parliament last year. loadingThe reported cases of people resorting to medically assisted death in part due to lack of supports are "tragic," Lametti said. DES MOINES — Friendly chatter between moderator Tucker Carlson and Republican presidential hopeful Asa Hutchinson quickly devolved during an onstage interview Friday at the Family Leadership Summit, a major gathering of social conservatives. Right off the bat, Carlson asked the former Arkansas governor if his stance had changed from when he vetoed a ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth in 2021. As Carlson repeatedly questioned him about care for transgender minors, Hutchinson asked Carlson to move on. Tensions escalated further when the former Fox News host pivoted to vaccines, asking how many shots Hutchinson had received. CNN —Hungary’s second-largest bookstore, Lira, said on Friday it plans to take legal action after it received a hefty government fine for the sale of an LGBT-themed British webcomic and graphic novel aimed at teenagers without closed wrapping. The popular “Heartstopper” series, in which two gay teens fall in love, has also been adapted by Netflix as a romantic comedy-drama. Krisztian Nyary, Lira’s creative director and a well-known author himself, told Reuters the fine was disproportionate, the law vaguely worded and that the bookstore would respond legally. Last month, U.S. District Judge David Hale found that the ban likely violated the U.S. Constitution. However, he said he had to put his order on hold because the federal appeals court hearing the case recently paused a similar order in Tennessee. The law is being challenged by families of transgender children who say they will be irreparably harmed by losing access to medical treatments. The now-reinstated Kentucky and Tennessee laws were both blocked by federal judges on June 28 in response to lawsuits by families of transgender children. The families say the laws discriminate against transgender people and take away parents' right to make medical decisions for their children.

The traditional gatekeepers of knowledge — librarians, journalists and government officials — have largely been replaced by technological gatekeepers — search engines, artificial intelligence chatbots and social media feeds. Whatever their flaws, the old gatekeepers were, at least on paper, beholden to the public. The reforms also require large tech platforms to audit their algorithms to determine how they affect democracy, human rights and the physical and mental health of minors and other users. To hold them accountable, the law also requires large tech platforms like Facebook and Twitter to provide researchers with access to real-time data from their platforms. But there is a crucial element that has yet to be decided by the European Union: whether journalists will get access to any of that data.
