REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Sam Bankman-Fried, the indicted founder of now-bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, may face a "very long sentence" if convicted at his fraud trial starting next week, the judge overseeing the case said on Thursday. Kaplan said Bankman-Fried was a flight risk. "Your client in the event of conviction could be looking at a very long sentence," Kaplan said in a hearing in Manhattan federal court. Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of fraud and conspiracy stemming from FTX's collapse in November 2022. Prosecutors say Bankman-Fried stole billions of dollars in FTX customer deposits to plug losses at Alameda Research, a crypto-focused hedge fund he controlled.

Mark Cuban says the "most important" advice he gives his children is simple: It's OK not to know exactly what you want to do with your lives. "Everybody goes through that process of trying to figure out who they are," Cuban, 65, said, adding that he told his daughter: "You don't have to know what you're going to be. And you're changing, and you're evolving." "What you've got to be able to do is be agile and excited about learning — to be curious," Cuban said. If you're curious, and you're agile, you'll get there eventually.

The Brewers have reached the playoffs five of the last six years, the exception coming last season. There’s a sense of urgency associated with this playoff berth because of the long-term uncertainty surrounding some key figures. The Brewers were one win away from the World Series in 2018 when they lost a Game 7 at home to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but they haven’t won a postseason series since. Although Milwaukee owns a combined 2-10 record against the Atlanta Braves and Dodgers — the NL’s top two playoff seeds — the Brewers’ pitching gives them reason for optimism. The Brewers have lost seven of their last eight postseason games, a stretch that started with that Game 7 defeat in 2018.

At 17 years old, Quddus Pativada was determined to do something about inequality in education. Now, three years later, the 20-year-old Pativada has turned his high school vision into a full-fledged startup, with 8 employees globally working on his AI educational assistant ASI, formerly known as Digest.ai. Pativada set out to create a new AI-powered studying assistant nearly a year before ChatGPT debuted on the world stage. After more interactions, the AI tutoring bot can pick up on what a student is good at and where they may need more help, to further personalize the experience for that learner's needs. Pativada's grand vision for ASI is still to offer personalized tutoring for individual students, but to also market the learning tool to governments and businesses for quick, personalized employee upskilling.

Patients with private health insurance aren't likely to see a drop in costs from the negotiations. Longo said the price-setting provisions will drive research and investment away from treatment options for Medicare patients. If drug companies won't come to the negotiating table to lower drug prices paid by private insurers, those insurers could take the companies' drugs off their lists of covered medications. Or, if private insurance companies don't negotiate drug prices down for their patients, patients in some cases could seek out different insurance. "These are not full solutions, but they are the beginning of cracks in the facade" of drug companies' constant price hikes, Feldman said.

You've probably heard the aphorism "perfect is the enemy of good" before. Spenser Skates, the 35-year-old CEO and co-founder of analytics software company Amplitude — which has a market cap of $1.38 billion — disagrees. Yet behind the scenes, the co-founders weren't sold on their own idea — which was "pretty good," but not "the bestest best," Skates says. It's timely advice: Entrepreneurship is on the rise in the U.S., and starting your own business is risky. "For a lot of teams, it's a hard decision, because you're talking about killing your momentum on something and restarting on something else, even when that might be the right decision," Skates says.

Tech billionaire Mark Cuban recently lost nearly $900,000 worth of crypto to a scam that could happen to any crypto owner. On Friday, apparent hackers drained Cuban's digital wallet of around $870,000 worth of various types of cryptocurrencies, including various stablecoins, SuperRare and Ethereum Name Service tokens, according to crypto news outlet DL News. However, Cuban says he believes he downloaded a fraudulent version of the popular app that he found in a Google search, according to DL News. That's one reason financial experts advise against putting more money into crypto than you're willing to potentially lose. Before the hackers made off with more of Cubans digital funds, he says he was able to transfer his remaining virtual assets to Coinbase, per DL News.

REUTERS/Brian Snyder/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsCompanies Orsted A/S FollowSept 18 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden's plan to deploy 30,000 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind by 2030 is still possible, although not easy, the CEO of Orsted (ORSTED.CO), the world's largest offshore wind developer, said on Monday at the Climate Week NYC event in New York. The Biden administration has passed lucrative subsidies aimed at helping companies build new offshore wind power capacity to help decarbonize the power sector and revitalize domestic manufacturing. But offshore wind developers have said that certain tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act, Biden's landmark climate change law, are insufficient and are lobbying for less stringent rules around qualifying for the credits. Last week, the governors of six Northeastern states urged Biden to direct his administration to take actions to support struggling offshore wind projects. Offshore wind is crucial to the targets of Northeast states who want to move away from fossil fuel-fired electricity.

London CNN —When Liz Truss was briefly Britain’s prime minister a year ago, the world’s sixth-largest economy came close to resembling Argentina, a country plagued by financial and economic instability. Truss and her Brexit-backing allies have long argued that lower taxes and fewer regulations — akin to Singapore’s approach — would help kickstart sorely needed growth in the UK. Britain, for its part, is battling stubbornly high inflation, feeble economic growth and a rising public debt burden, which is the costliest to service among rich economies. At the time, Carney, who was head of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020, accused Truss’s government of “undercutting” the nation’s economic institutions. “Mark Carney is part of the 25-year economic consensus that has led to low growth across the Western world,” she said.

Mark Cuban has "a secret that all successful people know," he says: Beware of anyone who claims they can sell you a foolproof strategy for making easy money. "When you see somebody on social media telling you how they're going to make you money, they're lying," the billionaire entrepreneur and investor told his 940,000-plus TikTok followers in a recent post on the social media platform, while sharing his "tip of the day." Be especially wary of ones who specialize in particular industries, or tell you they'll help you set up a specific kind of business, Cuban said. "When somebody is selling their idea — shoes, drop shipping, whatever it may be — to you, and they're selling it to other people, you know what they're doing besides lining their pockets?" Instead of cutting corners, do the difficult work of figuring out your best business strategy for yourself, Cuban advised.

Versus the June survey, a corn harvested area increase of 774,000 acres in the fall is the largest ever back to at least the mid-1990s. Only 2012's increase of 890,000 acres (0.9%) was larger, though final corn acres usually come in lower than in June (15 of last 20 years). USDA was not the only entity too low on U.S. corn acres this year. The March planting survey came in more than a million acres above the trade estimate, then June corn acres blew out the highest trade guess by more than a million acres, topping the average guess by more than 2 million acres. That is the opposite of what happened in 2021, the last time USDA’s fall area review substantially boosted corn acres.
