Now synonymous with British pop star Charli XCX’s chart-topping studio album, the cultural influence of “Brat” green knows no bounds. Last week, the official X account of the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority alerted commuters of train repairs using a “Brat” green graphic. Google even predicts searches for “Brat summer” will reach their maximum popularity this week. She recently noticed a colleague was inadvertently wearing Brat green during an art gallery board meeting. ‘What does this shade of green mean versus this shade of green?

Her multi-hour phone blitz to Democratic Party power players on Sunday hinted at an operation primed ahead of time but that was kept secret and didn’t leak. The vice president has shown signs of improving her political skills recently, but that’s never been her forte. In a memo to reporters, the Trump campaign previewed a blistering assault to come on Harris. Harris is the least popular vice president in history – which is no surprise given her terrible record,” the memo said. The question now is whether Harris, who has exhibited considerable political liabilities as vice president, has the skills, staying power and luck to take advantage.

Global markets rise after Biden exit

New York CNN —Global markets made solid gains after President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential election Sunday and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. European markets were higher, and Asian markets closed mostly lower. But “the fact that Biden endorsed Kamala Harris reduces uncertainty,” said Jay Hatfield, CEO at Infrastructure Capital Advisors. “Markets are increasingly focused on the US presidential election in November,” wrote Deutsche Bank’s Henry Allen in a research note on Monday. Stocks tumbled toward the end of last week as a turbulent election cycle and a global tech outage rocked technology stocks in particular.

CNN —More and more people are using marijuana before or during pregnancy to ease nausea, pain, stress and help with sleep. What about the potential danger to the mother if she uses cannabis before or during early pregnancy? People who used marijuana in early pregnancy also had a “19% greater risk of placental abruption,” Young-Wolff said. Using at least once a month or more was linked to a greater risk of placental abruption, the study found. “More studies are needed to understand whether and how cannabis use in pregnancy may impact risk for gestational diabetes,” Moore said.

Even on Tuesday night, when they disrupted a meeting of the Metro Council, spouting “antisemitic, homophobic and racist diatribes,” according to the Nashville Scene’s Eli Motycka, I couldn’t say I was surprised. Just a week earlier, a different group marched on our streets carrying Confederate flags, and in February white supremacists marched here to celebrate “the great white South.” As a blue city in a deep-red state, Nashville has become an appealing target for people who fear diversity. “Diversity means fewer white people,” read the flyers that last week’s marchers handed out. Equity means stealing from white people.”In an irony of timing, “Dynamite Nashville: Unmasking the FBI, the KKK, and the Bombers Beyond Their Control,” a new book by the Nashville historian Betsy T. CNN —Four days after a faulty software update from a cybersecurity company unexpectedly brought down computers and technical systems across the world, airlines and some other companies are still experiencing delays and other technical problems. The outage was related to a software update rolled out by CrowdStrike, a major US cybersecurity firm. The issue is specific to Falcon, one of CrowdStrike’s main software products, and is not impacting Mac or Linux operating systems, according to the advisory. US-based carriers American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Allegiant Airlines, SunCountry and Frontier Airlines all reported issues on Friday. More than 1,200 Delta flights were canceled on Sunday, after the carrier canceled 1,208 flights on Saturday, according to FlightAware.

Types of savings accountsRegular savings accountsRegular savings accounts are the type of savings account you could expect to open at a brick-and-mortar bank. High-yield savings accountsWhen compared to regular savings accounts, high-yield savings accounts pay significantly higher rates. Money market accounts and savings accounts differ in two main ways: Money market accounts frequently come with debit cards, ATM cards, and checks, while savings accounts generally have a lower opening deposit requirement. A high annual percentage yield is especially important if you are looking for a high-yield savings account, rather than a regular savings account at an in-person bank. It’s becoming harder to get — and keep — a car

Cook did the math, made a pros and cons list, and bought a new car. Courtesy Greg CookHis car — the monthly payment, the fast-rising insurance, fuel and maintenance costs — takes up a 30% share of his monthly budget. And buying a car is no cakewalk either: Credit is increasingly harder to come by and rejection rates are spiking. Instead, consumers have been presented with a higher bar, including requirements for a heftier down payment and a higher credit score, he said. More restrictive lending typically equates to approval rates going down and rejection rates rising.

Obviously, the big political news of the past couple of days has come from the Democratic side. But before last week’s Republican National Convention fades from view, let me focus instead on a development on the G.O.P. Until now, most of the anti-immigration sloganeering coming from Donald Trump and his campaign has involved false claims that we’re experiencing a migrant crime wave. Increasingly, however, Trump and his associates have started making the case that immigrants are stealing American jobs — specifically, the accusation that immigrants are inflicting terrible damage on the livelihoods of Black workers. Of course, the idea that immigrants are taking jobs away from native-born Americans, including native-born Black Americans, isn’t new.

The US economy added 206,000 jobs in June, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported July 5, a small dip from May’s tally of 215,000 jobs. Inflation rates are nowhere near the pandemic-era peak reached in June 2022, when US inflation hit 9.1%, its highest annual rate in more than 40 years. As of last month, annual inflation was 3%, down from 3.3% in May, according to the Consumer Price Index. But the legislation comes as some manufacturing jobs have also been cut due to outsourcing. Manufacturing jobs across the country have plateaued at 13 million employees after recovering from a sharp pandemic-related downswing in 2020, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

CNN —The Supreme Court on Monday turned down a request from a former Colorado county clerk to halt her upcoming trial on charges stemming from her alleged involvement in an apparent security breach at the county’s election offices in 2021. Justice Neil Gorsuch denied the request from Tina Peters, the former clerk of Mesa County, Colorado, and a prominent 2020 election denier, without comment. The order came from Gorsuch because he oversees matters arising from the appeals court that rejected Peters’ efforts to throw out the criminal case. The criminal investigation into the clerk’s office began after Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold, a Democrat, accused Peters and her deputies of facilitating the breach. Peters’ trial is set to begin on July 29.

These were two of the visual cues for Bond Tower, a 50-story residential building and hotel that seems to trick the eye. Designed by Portuguese architecture firm OODA, the skyscraper will feature two connected structures that gently separate before rejoining one other, giving it a warped effect. Bond Tower was designed by the firm OODA, which has three more projects underway in the city. This month, OODA will break ground on a greenery filled residential tower called Hora Vertikale that was designed as a “vertical village,” according to the firm. CNN —Hunter Biden on Sunday abruptly dropped a lawsuit he filed last month against Fox News over the network’s fictionalized miniseries that he alleged included sexually explicit images of him without consent. Representatives for Hunter Biden didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on Sunday. The miniseries, “The Trial of Hunter Biden,” was a six-part offering that featured a dramatized “mock trial” about Hunter Biden’s overseas financial dealings that led, in part, to his federal tax indictment and claims that fueled House Republicans’ stalled impeachment inquiry into his father. Fox News removed the miniseries from its platforms in late April after Biden threatened to file a lawsuit. While Hunter Biden ended his lawsuit against Fox, his legal challenges continue.

Tadej Pogačar completes dominant Tour de France victory
  + stars: | 2024-07-21 | by ( Issy Ronald | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
CNN —A certain nonchalance has marked Tadej Pogačar’s ruthless overall victory at this year’s Tour de France, a race he has dominated from start to finish, accomplishing feats not achieved for more than a quarter of century. His fifth and sixth stage victories of the race followed on Saturday and Sunday, the biggest haul for any rider since 2009 and an enormous amount for a general classification rider like Pogačar. Not since 1948 has a rider won five mountain stages in a single edition of the race like Pogacar did this year. Their rivalry has shaped every edition of the Tour de France since 2021 when Denmark’s Vingegaard emerged as an unlikely challenger to a rampant Pogačar. Only young Remco Evenepoel, making his Tour de France debut, could remain within touching distance of these two, eventually finishing in third place, 9:18 behind Pogačar.

Friday brought a pointed reminder that disaster is at least as likely to creep in quietly, perhaps from a piece of technology so mundane that hardly anyone knows it exists. Our lives are built on systems piled on systems. This week’s global software outage, immediately proclaimed as the biggest in history, was not caused by terrorists or A.I. It wasn’t even done as a lark by some off-the-charts smart teenager. Instead, it was a routine upgrade that somehow went off the rails.
CNN —The Curiosity rover has made its most unusual find to date on Mars: rocks made of pure sulfur. “I think it’s the strangest find of the whole mission and the most unexpected,” said Ashwin Vasavada, Curiosity project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Previously, while exploring Mars, NASA’s Spirit rover broke one of its wheels and had to drag it along while using the other five to drive backward. And Vasavada says it’s what inspired the team to “look behind” the Curiosity rover — otherwise they wouldn’t have seen the crushed sulfur. To determine what process formed the sulfur rocks, the team considered nearby bedrock instead.

At 5:30 a.m., US cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike tells customers that it was “aware of reports of crashes” of its software on Microsoft Windows operating systems, according to a company advisory viewed by CNN. Australian lenders ANZ and Westpac were also impacted, according to Downdetector, a website that tracks cyber outages. Other states also report impacts to their driving services, including Georgia, North Carolina, Texas and Tennessee. CrowdStrike would take steps “to prevent anything like this from happening again,” according to a statement on the company’s website.

A week before the shooting, Thomas Matthew Crooks searched online for the date of the Democratic National Convention and where Trump planned to speak, as well as other searches for Trump and President Joe Biden. Unlike other mass shooters who often leave behind manifestos or writings to explain their attack, Crooks left behind few clues, in his bedroom or online.
