Massive shark is struck by boat in rare video footage
  + stars: | 2024-07-24 | by ( Jackie Wattles | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —Rare footage captured by a camera strapped to the back of an endangered shark shows the jarring moment it was struck by a boat — prompting the animal to dash into deep waters and rest for hours. It’s not clear whether the massive 23-foot (7-meter) animal, known as a basking shark, ultimately survived the collision. The basking shark is a massive creature, growing up to 40 feet (12 meters) long, and is among the largest fish in the world — second only to the whale shark. But the video and study findings that came out of the incident are timely for the shark research community, noted Dr. Christopher Lowe, the director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach. Protecting basking sharksMcInturf emphasized that Ireland — and the United Kingdom — have already taken significant steps to help protect endangered basking sharks.

Living in Turkey has for decades, even centuries, meant navigating the stray dogs. There has been fierce debate and protests over the fate of stray dogs since Mr. Erdogan proposed “radical” measures in a speech in May. Supporters of what came to be known as Mr. Erdogan’s “euthanasia bill” point to car accidents and injuries caused by the dogs. They say that streets are not suitable homes for dogs, and that their presence makes cities more dangerous for humans and animals alike. We also fear the worst: that beloved dogs we’ve looked after for months or years might suddenly disappear because an overanxious citizen placed an anonymous call.

“Hydrothermal explosions are violent and dramatic events resulting in the rapid ejection of boiling water, steam, mud, and rock fragments,” according to the US Geological Survey. “Porkchop Geyser, in Norris Geyser Basin, experienced an explosion in 1989, and a small event in Norris Geyser Basin was recorded by monitoring equipment on April 15, 2024. Hydrothermal explosions like that of today are not a sign of impending volcanic eruptions, and they are not caused by magma rising towards the surface.”Large hydrothermal explosions occur on an average of every 700 years, the USGS says. “Although large hydrothermal explosions are rare events on a human time scale, the potential for additional future events of the sort in Yellowstone National Park is not insignificant. Based on the occurrence of large hydrothermal explosion events over the past 16,000 years, an explosion large enough to create a 100-(meter)- (328-ft-) wide crater might be expected every few hundred years,” it added.

“The award of $464 million in a case with no victims, no proven injuries, and no losses is not remotely defensible,” Trump’s lawyers wrote. According to Trump’s attorneys, Trump personally should have been dismissed as a defendant. The Trump attorneys accused Engoron of enacting a “punitive” penalty against the former president that was unconstitutional. Just like at trial, Trump’s lawyers in particular took issue with a reference in Engoron’s summary judgment opinion that Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort was valued at $18 million. During the trial, Engoron said that he was not trying to assess the value of the property when he referenced the tax assessor value.

A New York couple who bought their 16-year-old son a BMW were sentenced on Monday to three years of probation and 26 weeks of parenting classes after the teenager drove the car at speeds of more than 100 miles an hour, slammed into a truck and killed his passenger, a 14-year-old girl. The teenager, whose name has not been released because of his age, was arraigned last December on at least a dozen charges, including second-degree manslaughter and reckless endangerment of a child. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. He had a junior driver’s license, which prohibited him from driving unsupervised under any circumstances in New York City, when in May 2023 he crashed his red 2005 BMW 325i into the back of a parked UPS truck in the Springfield Gardens neighborhood of Queens, prosecutors said. The teenage driver survived the crash with minor injuries, but his passenger, Fortune Williams, a freshman at a Springfield Gardens high school, was thrown from the car and pronounced dead at the scene, prosecutors said.

Read previewAdministered ketamine is being used in concert with therapy to treat Ukrainian veterans who experience post-traumatic stress disorder from fighting on the battlefield. AdvertisementA study published earlier this year focused on the treatment of depression among veterans using ketamine taken through an IV. The doses provided at least partial relief to many of the test subjects and after six weeks of ketamine infusions, depression scores dropped significantly. "Soldiers, for them, it's natural to consider themselves like a strong man," Matrenitsky said, explaining that the effects of the ketamine therapy allow individuals to overcome defensive barriers over their emotions. In partnership with Heal Ukraine Trauma, Matrenitsky along with other healthcare professionals have teamed up to form the Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy initiative in hopes of educating Ukrainian therapists on Ketamine-Assisted Therapy.

CNN —Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Friday claimed responsibility for a deadly drone blast in Tel Aviv, the Iranian proxy group’s latest attack in what it says is a response to Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. The drone that caused the explosion was detected by an Israeli aerial defense system, but not intercepted due to “human error,” an Israeli military official said. The Israeli military is investigating the attack and does not believe further threats are imminent, the official said. An investigator inspects a damaged window of a building at the site of an explosion in Tel Aviv on July 19, 2024. Adobe Analytics forecasted before the mega-sale that this year's Prime Day would hit a record $14 billion in sales, breaking 2023's record by 10.5%. And it's too early to know what Amazon shoppers bought around the world: Some countries' Prime Day sales stretch for nearly a week, while India's Prime Day happens later this summer.
