David Solomon’s Goldman remix is audibly off-key

NEW YORK, Oct 17 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Having given up a side-gig in DJ-ing, Goldman Sachs (GS.N) boss David Solomon has one less distraction. Goldman reported a one-third year-on-year drop in earnings on Tuesday, in a quarter riddled with one-off charges. Those included a hit related to buy-now-pay-later lender GreenSky, which Goldman bought only two years ago, and is selling. Absent all that, Goldman would have made a return on equity of just over 10%. Goldman made a 7.1% return on equity in the quarter, on an annualized basis, which would have been 10.2% without one-off charges.

Goldman Sachs chief executive (and noted party DJ) David Solomon will no longer perform at high-profile events, picking Wall Street over South Beach, a representative from the second-largest investment bank confirmed to CNN. Solomon, who performed under the alias DJ D-Sol, began spinning tracks at festivals and in night clubs a few years ago. “David [Solomon] doesn’t work to play diplomat,” Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, who runs Yale School of Management’s Chief Executive Leadership Institute, recently told CNN. And while shares of Goldman Sachs (GS) may be down by more than 8.4% this year, they’re still up by about 40% since he took over in 2018. Goldman Sachs announced third-quarter results on Tuesday morning, reporting earnings of $5.47 per share, which beat the $5.31 expected by analysts.

For the first time in a long time, tech workers are in a funk. This rare combination of generous compensation and a reasonable work-life balance kept tech workers happier than employees in other industries. Economy wide, there were on average 6.6 front-line workers per manager in 2018 and 2019, but post-pandemic, the ratio dropped to 6 to 1. It's possible that as tech companies have grown into more complex organizations, more management layers are necessary. Fundamentally, it's about listening to and elevating the voices of front-line employees.

Insider Today: Tech workers are bummed

AdvertisementAdvertisementIn today's big story, we're looking at why some tech workers don't love their jobs anymore. Many factors led to the shift, from significant layoffs in Big Tech to in-office mandates and financial pressure due to high interest rates. AdvertisementAdvertisement(Interestingly enough, Terrazas writes that workers in non-tech roles — like human resources and marketing — report the highest job satisfaction at Big Tech companies.) But it feels like tech workers themselves will end up having to do a bit of recalibration. Working in Big Tech has become a job like any other corporate gig.

Elon Musk’s worst nightmare

It's hard to tell, for a simple reason: The data on the safety of robot cars sucks. Until robot cars have traveled for hundreds of millions of miles, there's no way to get a statistically significant, unequivocal conclusion. If the data on robot cars is equivocal or incomplete, then those rules should keep them off the road. In a sense, she's Elon Musk's worst nightmare. To her, the safety of self-driving cars is not an abstract question.

NEW YORK (AP) — From auto production lines to Hollywood, the power of labor unions is back in the national spotlight. The tightest U.S. labor market in decades is adding to leverage workers feel they have to challenge their employers. UNION RATES HAVE BEEN FALLING FOR DECADES. That came around the same era that states also began to pass labor laws for their own public workers. Generally, states in the Northeast, upper Midwest and West Coast adopted more expansive collective bargaining laws — reaching all different categories of public employees, Vachon explains.

How Many Credit Cards Should I Have?
  + stars: | 2023-10-10 | by ( Gerri Detweiler | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +17 min
Use this guide to identify what kind of credit card user you are—and how many credit cards you should have. A secured credit card can be a smart option if you don’t have a very good credit score. Most small business credit cards require a good personal credit score and sufficient income from all sources, not just the business. However, many business credit cards don’t appear on consumer credit reports, which means they don’t impact your credit scores as long as you pay on time. Similar to choosing a personal credit card, pick your business credit cards based on your spending habits.

Trying to maintain a career in Hollywood was "not something that was feasible for me to continue," this person told Insider. Insider spoke with eight current and former assistants at Hollywood companies, plus a former creative executive at a midsize film studio. Many hopefuls can't find jobs in an industry that's been wracked with head count reductions and budget cuts. Netflix's website lists just one open assistant job — a role in a non-creative vertical. At Paramount, which cut 25% of staff from its US cable networks earlier this year, there appear to be no open executive assistant jobs in entertainment capacities .

Specifically, his teenage solution to his family's financial woes — a dry-cleaning company — sold for $1 million in just three years, setting him on the path to serial entrepreneurship, Henry said. As a doorman, he connected with a resident who ran a different dry-cleaning company, and offered to teach him the economics behind the business, he said. After getting fired from his doorman gig, Henry realized he was learning more at the dry-cleaning company than at school, so he dropped out, he said. Pleased with the work, the wardrobe supervisor recommended Henry's dad to NBC's "Law and Order." After three years, Henry sold the company to one of its vendors for $1 million, Forbes reported in 2016.

Not long after founding the startup, Gaon shared his vision with famed venture capitalist Marc Andreessen. It was notable to Gaon at the time that Andreessen — "one of those investors who's known for seeing where the market is going" — appeared to have pinpointed loneliness as its own market. That moved her parents, Cindy and Anne Jordan, who had sold their first healthtech company years before, to found the Arizona company Pyx Health. "The loneliness crisis is bigger, and more urgent, than anything I've worked on before," Nyborg wrote in a blog post. Inspired debuted a thesis in 2020 that identified loneliness as a key focus for the firm to invest in.

Older generations were overrepresented among those earning less than $1,000 per month, given they were much less likely to note that gig work is their primary income source. Among those who use gig work as their primary income source, half are millennials. A working paper from May 2023 found that the number of platform gig workers increased from 1.8 million in 2019 to 4.9 million in 2021, corresponding to a 170% increase. Nearly one in four gig workers have been victimized by fraud or identity theft while using gig platforms — more than double the rate of those not using gig platforms. Given real income is growing, some gig platforms are struggling to attract new workers while keeping services affordable.
