Geoffrey Hinton, the computer scientist known as a "Godfather of AI," says artificial intelligence-enhanced machines "might take over" if humans aren't careful. "One of the ways these systems might escape control is by writing their own computer code to modify themselves," said Hinton. Humans, including scientists like himself who helped build today's AI systems, still don't fully understand how the technology works and evolves, Hinton said. As Hinton described it, scientists design algorithms for AI systems to pull information from data sets, like the internet. Pichai and other AI experts don't seem nearly as concerned as Hinton about humans losing control.

On Saturday, Hamas gunmen from the Gaza Strip rampaged through parts of southern Israel, killing hundreds of people in the deadliest Palestinian militant attack in Israel's history. Israel's embassy in Washington said the death toll from the weekend Hamas attacks had surpassed 1,000. U.S. officials say they do not have evidence Iran orchestrated the attacks, but point to Iran's longterm support for Hamas. Biden called the Hamas attacks "an act of sheer evil" and said Washington was rushing additional military assistance to Israel, including ammunition and interceptors to replenish the Iron Dome aerial defense system. Israeli soldiers went from house to house to take away the dead.

During the coronavirus pandemic, states were prohibited from removing people from Medicaid in exchange for receiving enhanced federal funding. States have 14 months to finish their backlog of eligibility reviews, according to guidelines from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Like in most states, many of those who lost Medicaid coverage in Arkansas were removed for procedural reasons, such as not returning renewal forms needed to verify their eligibility. People removed from Medicaid can regain coverage retroactively if they provide information proving their eligibility within 90 days. Arkansas' percentage decline in children covered by Medicaid ranks among the largest in the nation, Alker said.

In June 2022, the Southeast Asian nation became the first in Asia to decriminalize the cannabis plant, allowing it to be grown and consumed freely. Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai party and one of Srettha's coalition partners, was a key figure responsible for legalizing recreational cannabis. Currently, many outlets claim to be medical cannabis platforms but they often prioritize profits rather than patient health, a number of clinics told CNBC. "This could foster a more positive perception of the cannabis industry among the public, and for the industry to sustain in the long run," Jintana said. "The prospect of exporting cannabis products to legal foreign markets aligns with Thailand's medical hub policy propelling both medicinal cannabis and other traditional herbs to the forefront," said Jintana.

LONDON, Oct 10 (Reuters Breakingviews) - A new and deadly chapter of the decades-old Israel-Palestinian conflict is a reality check for an ambitious trade route. IMEC’s chief backers waxed lyrical about the potential of the trade route involving railways, ports and green energy. Demand is there: India's total trade with Saudi Arabia more than doubled in two years, hitting around $53 billion in financial year 2023. In the near-term, the Suez Canal will remain the primary route for goods travelling to Europe from India, while Turkey can press its own rival trade route. The Biden administration is continuing to push for normalisation talks between Saudi Arabia and Israel, the New York Times reported on Oct. 8.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s president said Tuesday that he rejected a U.S. request to set up migrant transit centers in Mexico. Neighboring Guatemala has set up one such center, where migrants can apply for U.S. work and refugee visas. “We have been looking at setting up sites in Mexico, because they (the United States) have asked for it,” López Obrador said. The centers are part of a larger migratory strategy aimed at reducing the large number of migrants from Latin American and the Caribbean to the United States. The influx of migrants has caused tension between the United States and Mexico.

Hezbollah on Sunday said it had launched guided rockets and artillery onto three posts in the Shebaa Farms "in solidarity" with the Palestinian people. Israel has held the Shebaa Farms, a 15-square-mile (39-square-km) patch of land, since 1967. A Lebanese security source told Reuters that a tent set up by Hezbollah in the Shebaa Farms had been hit and that Hezbollah fighters had erected a new one. CNN —While assuring Americans there are no credible threats locally, cities throughout the United States are ramping up security around houses of worship after the large-scale attack by Gaza militants on Israel on Saturday. The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security issued “public safety concern” bulletins Saturday to state and local law enforcement and said they are monitoring for any impact on the US domestic threat environment, a law enforcement official said. Israel then launched airstrikes on Gaza while its forces clashed on the ground with Hamas fighters. In Israel, at least 300 people have died and thousands of others are wounded, officials said. In Gaza, at least 232 Palestinians have died and more than 1,600 are wounded, the Palestinian health ministry said.

Johnson & Johnson is a buy after the company's consumer business spinoff earlier this year, according to RBC Capital Markets. The firm initiated Johnson & Johnson with an outperform rating and $178 price target, which suggests shares can climb about 14.5% from Wednesday's close. This separation has "unlocked potential" for Johnson & Johnson going forward, analyst Shagun Singh said. Singh also said the company's pharma franchise is poised to deliver competitive growth and that its medtech division is on pace to achieve "top-tier growth and profitability." The analyst added that Johnson & Johnson is trading below its historical multiples despite its improved financial profile since its Kenvue spinoff and that the company has potential upside from further M & A activity.

PARIS, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Aircall, a call centre software company that has been valued at around $1 billion, said on Thursday it was in no rush for a stock market flotation, as it unveiled a new product to help smaller-sized businesses and added that its revenue had risen. The company has often been touted as a likely stock market candidate. Pailhes said that while an initial public offering (IPO) remained an option, it was something the company could examine once it reached annual recurring revenue of $200 million, which Aircall hopes to achieve in the next 18 months. Within two years, we'll talk about it again, but we don't need to rush," said Pailhes, speaking via Zoom from Spain, regarding any stock market flotation plans. Aircall, launched in Paris in 2014, is viewed as a success story from France's technology sector, although the company is now headquartered in New York.
