Rio Tinto said recently that aluminum demand has slowed down considerably in recent months. Signs of an end to China’s pandemic lockdowns have sparked a resurgence in prices for industrial metals. Traders are betting that the possible end of three years of China’s stringent pandemic restrictions could spark greater demand from the world’s leading user of commodities. U.S. copper futures recently recorded their largest one-day percentage gain since 2009. Zinc and tin trading in London had their best week since summer, while aluminum jumped over 6%.

Today's EVs run on lithium ion batteries — mostly made with lithium, cobalt, manganese and high-grade nickel, whose prices have soared. The EVs of the future — those arriving after 2025 — could shift to sodium ion or lithium sulfur battery cells that could be up to two-thirds cheaper than today's lithium ion cells. China's CATL (300750.SZ) has said it plans to begin producing sodium ion cells in 2023. Michigan-based Amandarry and British startup AMTE Power (AMTE.L) are developing sodium ion batteries using sodium chloride — basically table salt — as the main cathode ingredient. Battery developers hope they can add sodium ion and lithium sulfur batteries to the range open to the auto industry.

The MoU was signed on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia. Under the MoU, Hyundai would secure the right to purchase aluminium produced by Adaro's subsidiary PT Kalimantan Aluminum Industry at an early stage of production, the statement said. Adaro Minerals is a unit of Indonesia's second-largest coal miner Adaro Energy.
