CNN —Thousands of Florida residents have been forced to evacuate as the state prepares for rapidly strengthening Tropical Storm Helene, which could bring powerful winds, flooding and life-threatening storm surge to areas already hard-hit by recent hurricanes. The Big Bend area faces the most serious storm surge: up to 15 feet of it is possible. Over in Sanibel, one couple who met during Hurricane Ian in 2022 and nearly lost everything are now going to weather Tropical Storm Helene together, CNN affiliate WINK reported. Large clouds move over Havana due to the proximity of the tropical storm Helene, on September 24. Officials in neighboring Pinellas County warned hundreds of homes would likely flood with a higher storm surge than in past destructive storms.

New Delhi CNN —India has confirmed its first case of a deadlier strain of mpox, which has raised alarm among health officials around the world over the rapid pace of its spread. On Wednesday, the state’s Health Minister Veena George hailed Kerala’s “robust health care system” for detecting the case. The strain has since been detected in several countries outside Africa, including Sweden and Thailand. Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that can spread easily between people and from infected animals. LONDON — European stocks are expected to open in negative territory Wednesday, paring gains from the previous session on the back of Chinese stimulus measures. The U.K.'s FTSE index is expected to open 46 points lower at 8,237, Germany's DAX down 49 points at 18,924, France's CAC 40 down 27 points at 7,568 and Italy's FTSE MIB down 181 points at 33,686, according to data from IG. European stocks traded higher Tuesday, buoyed by China's central bank monetary stimulus measures with mining, technology and household goods the best-performing sectors. Positive sentiment in Europe comes after Asia-Pacific markets climbed Tuesday after Beijing's announcement of a range of policy easing measures aimed at stimulating the economy.

The firm's chief global strategist, Peter Berezin, pointed to two low-key labor market indicators flashing warning signals this month. AdvertisementHistorically, that number has always increased in the early stages of a recession, Berezin says. Meanwhile, recent survey data shows a narrowing gap in positive and negative labor market sentiment. On average, the peak in the labor differential comes nine months ahead of a recession, Berezin says. He says the data points to the contrary, with a slowdown in year-over-year labor force growth from 1.9% a year ago to 0.4% in August.
