Investors are gauging what a potential Kamala Harris presidency could mean for the stock market. Second-quarter GDP and the June PCE index will be released later this week. The gains came one day after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election, and instead endorsed his Vice President, Kamala Harris. That will be followed by the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, the PCE index, at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. Economists expect the June Core PCE index to rise 2.5% year over year, which is not far off from the Fed's long-term inflation target of 2%.

London CNN —Ryanair said Monday that it expects airfares during the busy summer travel season to be “materially lower” than last year as the low-cost carrier reported a plunge in profits. Europe’s biggest airline by passenger numbers, comparable in size to Delta Air Lines in the United States, said its average fare fell nearly 15% in the April-to-June quarter from the same period in 2023, to €41.93 ($45.65) from €49.07 ($53.42). Ryanair (RYAAY) attributed that dip in the first quarter of its financial year, in part, to the timing of the Easter break this year, some of which fell over March. The airline previously thought fares would be “flat to modestly up,” he added. Ryanair reported a 46% fall in profits in the first quarter of the year, to €360 million ($392 million), despite a 10% rise in the number of passengers.

Li, 27, is part of a growing base of Chinese workers swapping high-pressure office jobs for flexible blue-collar work. But these firms are slowly losing their appeal as China’s economy faces headwinds including a property crisis, declining foreign investment and slumping consumption. The trend to move from professional to manual jobs comes amid surging demand for blue-collar workers, according to Chinese recruitment platform Zhaopin. And blue-collar workers’ pay has also gone up, attracting more people to jobs they might have previously avoided. Pressure of another kindBut some wonder if blue-collar work is truly the stress-free refuge people like Li and Wang imagine it to be.

Bangladesh army enforces curfew as students-led protests spiral

Bangladesh students vowed on July 18 to continue nationwide protests against civil service hiring rules, rebuffing an olive branch from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who pledged justice for seven killed in the demonstrations. Bangladesh soldiers patrolled the deserted streets of the capital Dhaka on Saturday during a curfew meant to quell deadly students-led protests against government job quotas that have killed at least 105 people this week. In addition to the deaths, the clashes have injured thousands, according to data from hospitals across Bangladesh. With the death toll climbing and police unable to contain the protests, Hasina's government imposed the national curfew and deployed the military. Those venturing out on the streets had their identification cards inspected by army personnel at different check points, TV footage showed.

At 5:30 a.m., US cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike tells customers that it was “aware of reports of crashes” of its software on Microsoft Windows operating systems, according to a company advisory viewed by CNN. Australian lenders ANZ and Westpac were also impacted, according to Downdetector, a website that tracks cyber outages. Other states also report impacts to their driving services, including Georgia, North Carolina, Texas and Tennessee. CrowdStrike would take steps “to prevent anything like this from happening again,” according to a statement on the company’s website.

Emergency call systems in at least three states were hit by the widespread CrowdStrike technology outage, although most major U.S. cities avoided problems overnight. In Oregon, some 911 centers, hospitals, airports, and public safety and emergency management agencies had major effects, said Erin Zysett, a spokeswoman for the Oregon Department of Emergency Management. teams are working very fast to apply the fixes that CrowdStrike has provided, and those impacts are being mitigated quickly,” she said, adding that statewide alert systems and public safety incident tracking systems were mostly unaffected. Emergency dispatchers in Portland, Ore., were forced to work without the help of crucial computer systems for several hours and had to work “manually,” Mila Mimica, a city spokeswoman, said in a statement. Mourners prepared to gather on Friday in a corner of western Pennsylvania to say their final goodbyes to Corey Comperatore, the father of two who was killed during an attempt to assassinate former President Donald J. Trump at a rally last weekend. The funeral was set to take place at 11 a.m. at the church in Cabot, Pa., where Mr. Comperatore, 50, was a longtime member. Mr. Comperatore’s life revolved around this small pocket of Pennsylvania: He grew up in Sarver and still lived there with his high school sweetheart and two daughters. He attended church in Cabot and graduated from high school in nearby Freeport. Amid a widespread global IT outage, some investors were experiencing disruptions on Friday at financial services companies, including Charles Schwab , one of the country's largest brokerage firms. The issues stem from a faulty software update from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, which affected businesses worldwide, including airlines, banks and media outlets. CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said the company is "actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts." A banner across Charles Schwab's website said "certain online functionality may be intermittently slow or unavailable," noting that phone services may be disrupted with "longer than usual hold time." Charles Schwab did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.
