In front of a whiteboard from a classroom at Carnegie Mellon University, Strubell explains the Jevons effect, in which the gains from increased efficiency of a technological tool could be negated as use increases. The concept has come into focus as the conversation shifts to efficiency, AI, and the environment. Though they are a proponent for the advancement of AI, Strubell told Business Insider. Their work as an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon's Language Technologies Institute asks students and researchers to examine the systems that power AI to discover more efficient and environmentally friendly raw materials that power AI. For Chinese imports, Trump has proposed an even steeper 60% tariff. Many economists have warned that tariffs planned by Trump will hurt global economic growth and drive up inflation in the US, as well as abroad if other countries introduce higher levies on US imports in response. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also sees a hit to global gross domestic product from increased tariffs around the world, according to its latest World Economic Outlook. Mario Tama/Getty ImagesA rise in protectionism around the world means open trade is already under threat and the ability of its champion, the World Trade Organization, to settle international trade disputes is severely constrained. “What we’d see in Trump 2 is far more radical than what we saw in Trump 1.”

Bond market investors are having trouble figuring out an economy that looks good from 30,000 feet, but less so closer to the ground. Whether it's payrolls, gross domestic product or retail sales, or a host of other measures, growth looks solid, at the very least. On Wall Street, the general view was of concern: The Beige Book "showed no material improvement in a generally bleak outlook," Citigroup economist Andrew Hollenhorst wrote. However, if growth deteriorates, as the Beige Book indicates it has, that likely would push the Fed towards more reductions. "Despite recent stronger-than-expected data on U.S. employment, retail sales, and consumer inflation, the Fed's latest Beige Book signals a still weakening economy."

EV supporters point to dozens of new EV and battery plants announced in Michigan in the last two years. Political strategists told Business Insider that the anti-EV messaging was drowning out positive ones in Michigan, putting Democrats on the defensive in a critical battleground. "We've run some advertising trying to make the massive surge of new EV manufacturing at jobs in Michigan famous, because nobody knows about them," Murphy said. But that analysis didn't account for jobs created by new EV and battery manufacturing plants popping up across the country. Democrats are hitting back on Republicans' EV attacks, arguing that the US has to build its own domestic EV manufacturing base to compete with China.

With the Federal Reserve rate-cutting cycle now underway, income investors may want to take a closer look at their portfolios. In this environment, Vanguard likes higher-quality, fixed-income assets. However, with high yield credit, Vanguard is focusing on bottom-up security selection due to the dispersion among issuers. CCC-rated bonds gained 12.5% year to date, as of Sept 30, versus the 4.3% return in AA credit, according to Vanguard. Individual investors can get access to corporate credit through mutual funds or exchange-traded funds comprising investment-grade or high-yield bonds.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday told investors that resources like fossil fuels will remain important and enable technological innovations, even as investments in renewable energy continue to grow. While the tech megacaps are investing heavily in nuclear energy, Cramer suggested that power won't play a huge role in the data center for at least a decade. He also reviewed GE Vernova 's recent quarter, saying the company's strength came from electrification and natural gas, not wind or nuclear power. But Cramer also stressed that the conversation around fossil fuels extends beyond the automotive industry. "The truth is, fossil fuels are essential for a lot more than vehicles, like it or not."

Dover on Thursday reported weaker-than-expected third-quarter results, pressuring shares of the industrial conglomerate with ties to AI data centers. Dover Why we own it : We own Dover as an industrial turnaround story with exposure to mega-themes, most notably the data center buildout to support artificial intelligence computing. That created headlines that implied Dover cut its full-year guidance, but in reality executives warned in advance that sales growth and earnings projections would be altered. To be sure, we are restricted from trading Dover's stock for the next 72 hours because Jim Cramer on Thursday mentioned the company on CNBC TV. Dover considers those areas its "growth platforms," and their increasing share of the portfolio carries positive implications for Dover's margins.

The company's energy strategy team recently pitched CEO Andy Jassy on the benefits of nuclear power. AdvertisementIn June, Amazon's Global Energy Strategy team pitched CEO Andy Jassy the idea of doubling down on nuclear power to support its growing network of data centers. Jassy agreed, according to an internal Amazon document from the third quarter that was obtained by Business Insider. The company considered tapping into at least four additional existing nuclear power plants and sought even more small modular reactor deals. Nuclear power can be safer, more reliable, and more cost-efficient in the long term compared to other power sources, according to Jacopo Buongiorno, a nuclear engineering professor at MIT.

While many AI companies have focused on training large language models, Groq seeks to make them run as fast as possible using chips it developed called LPUs, or language processing units. The gambit is that as AI models get better, inference — the part where the AI makes decisions or answers questions — will demand more computing power than training will, positioning Groq to reap the rewards. Groq's special (and tightly patented) sauce is its specialized chip design says Ross. Dean asked Ross's team to design a chip based on a specific type of integrated circuit they were using, and the result was Google's first tensor processing unit, a chip designed specifically for AI. Watching the AlphaGo program land a complex "shoulder hit" move on its opponent was validation for Ross that faster inference meant better, smarter AI.
