Morning Bid: Downbeat on the downshift

A look at the day ahead in U.S. and global markets from Mike Dolan. The recent burst of stock market optimism around the world still seems to be on shaky ground. Despite expectations the U.S. Federal Reserve will signal a much-vaunted 'downshift' in its rate rise campaign from next month - following a fourth straight 75 basis point rise on Wednesday - the incoming economic numbers won't play ball. The other slightly peculiar source of global market optimism this week has been unverified speculation over the past 48 hours that China will ease its draconian zero COVID rules in March. In Europe, markets awaited the Bank of England's latest interest rate decision on Thursday - with the bank's biggest rate rise in 33 years forecast.
But unbeknownst to this good Samaritan, he was being watched by an Amazon Ring doorbell camera on the front porch, reported The Washington Post. Surveillance proponents will claim this act of violence had nothing to do with Ring and other networked doorbell cameras. Surveillance proponents will claim this act of violence had nothing to do with Ring and other networked doorbell cameras. But we have to face reality: Blanketing our neighborhoods in surveillance devices that promote a culture of suspicion makes all of us less safe. It even went so far as to launch an actual TV show, “Ring Nation,” on Amazon-owned MGM, featuring viral video from Ring cameras and other surveillance devices.

Macau mass tests its population after COVID-19 infections

HONG KONG, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Macau carried out mass testing of its 700,000 residents on Tuesday after the emergence of COVID-19 cases in the past week, including at a major casino that prompted authorities to seal 1,500 people inside. All residents in the world's biggest gambling hub have been told to take a PCR test on Tuesday and then test themselves daily with rapid antigen tests. The order comes as Typhoon Nalgae approaches southern China with authorities hoping the PCR tests can be completed in one day. Authorities locked down MGM China's (2282.HK) Cotai casino resort on Sunday, with staff and guests ordered to stay inside for three days. In one bright note for the industry, travelling to Macau became easier for mainland residents from Tuesday with the advent of an online visa system which replaces the need to file applications in person.
This photograph taken on October 20, 2022 shows a view of the Cotai Strip in Macau. China's immigration bureau said mainland residents will be able to travel to Macao from Nov. 1 using an online visa system rather than in-person applications, a move that could increase travel to the world's largest gambling hub. In-person applications have been required for the past two and a half years due to Covid-19 restrictions. Authorities locked down the MGM Cotai casino resort owned by MGM China on Sunday with staff and guests ordered to stay inside until Nov 1. All of Macao's 700,000 residents are mandated to take rapid antigen tests daily during the period, the government said.

The casino closure deals a blow to operators who have already been grappling with China's "zero COVID" restrictions for more than two and a half years, losing millions of dollars monthly. Shares in Hong Kong-listed Galaxy Entertainment (0027.HK) and Wynn Macau (1128.HK) dropped more than 3% early in Monday's session but later reversed course to trade in positive territory. Macau casino executives also said a decision on new licences could come as early as this week.
HONG KONG, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Macau's MGM Cotai casino, operated by MGM China (2282.HK), was locked down on Sunday morning after a dealer was found to be infected with COVID-19 in the world's biggest gambling hub, local publication Inside Asian Gaming reported. The closure deals a blow to casino operators who have already been grappling with COVID restrictions for more than two and a half years. Government health workers were at the MGM Cotai site with noone allowed to enter or exit the building, Inside Asian Gaming said. All of Macau's 700,000 residents must take a rapid antigen test for COVID daily from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, Macau's government said in a statement that made no mention of the MGM closure. Jobs report also on tapThe Fed meeting takes place just two days before the nation will get its next report card on the labor market. Another jobs report, from payroll processor ADP, is also due out next week, and this one looks just at Corporate America. The government said in the September jobs report that average hourly earnings rose 5% in the past 12 months. The Fed typically prefers to see wage growth in the 2% to 3% annual range as a sign that inflation is under control. The coming week is also the busiest of the corporate earnings season, with about a third of the S & P 500 companies releasing results. "Historically, the market waits for the last Fed rate hike to be introduced and then the market climbs higher. The S & P 500 was up more than 8.8% for the month. The Dow was up 5.7% on the week, the S & P 500 was up 5.7% and the Nasdaq was up 2.2%. The 50-day moving average is 3,841 for the S & P 500, and it was well above it Friday afternoon for the second time in the past week.
The major indexes all posted gains this week despite a Big Tech beatdown, proving the market can rally without its most valuable stocks. Indeed strength in other sectors — only communication services finished down — helped the overall market to shrug off disappointing earnings results from Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN) and Meta Platforms (META). Alphabet's results fell short of the Street's expectations, but still managed to grow revenue 6% annually off a $65 billion base. “Collectively, we represent the backbone of an American economy facing tremendous workforce challenges as a result of the pandemic. Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled that DACA was illegal but allowed more than 600,000 current DACA recipients to keep their status while a lower court reviewed a new DACA rule the Biden administration put forward. He is predicted to rule against the new DACA rule ultimately, because he found its previous iteration illegal. “Tragically, the 5th Circuit and courts have made it clear that not only did they rule the current DACA rule is illegal, but the new DACA rule will be illegal, too,” said Todd Schulte, the president and executive director of FWD.US, a group that has advocated for DACA to continue. “Now, no one trusts Democrats of the Biden administration to actually enforce the law and crack down on illegal immigration.
Reyes said Hollywood films often reflected the politics of their time — and that had an influence on Latino roles. Studies by the Government Accountability Office, the University of Southern California and other groups consistently show that Latinos are underrepresented in the film industry. Just this year, UCLA’s Hollywood Diversity Report documented “enormous gains” by women and people of color, but Latino representation still lagged. Slowly but surely, we are shaking up the narrative in Hollywood.”Calderón is frustrated by the continuing practice of “brownface,” whereby Latino roles go to white actors. Sanchez cited Eugenio Derbez in “Coda” (2021) as an example of a well-written Latino film character.
The data are limited to base salaries and US-based jobs for visa-seeking employees. Still, sports betting is as much about sports as it is gambling and tech — growing industries known for high-paying jobs. The data included five US sports betting companies: BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, Penn Interactive, and Rush Street Interactive. It included salaries for jobs such as a data engineer at DraftKings that would make $97,000 per year or more and a sports trading senior manager at FanDuel that would earn $130,000. A FanDuel software engineer based in New York would make $128,440, which is in the range of what TikTok has offered software engineers, the data shows.

Buying other companies is one option to help maintain its historical 20%-plus annual revenue growth, a person familiar with Amazon's deal process said. While Amazon doesn't necessarily prey on companies in trouble, the company is extremely price disciplined, the person familiar with Amazon's deal process told Insider. Bertucci has been a part of some of Amazon's largest transactions, including leading the MGM and One Medical deals. According to the person familiar with Amazon's deal process, Amazon only brings in investment banks when acquisitions reach roughly the $1 billion mark. Indeed, the One Medical deal alone could have netted Goldman and Morgan Stanley, which repped One Medical, in the tens of millions in fees.
