REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/File PhotoDETROIT, Oct 11 (Reuters) - General Motors Co (GM.N) is expanding beyond car making, with plans to offer energy storage and management services to residential and commercial customers through its new GM Energy unit in a move that puts it in even greater competition with Tesla Inc (TSLA.O). "We're getting into the entire ecosystem of energy management," GM executive Travis Hester said in an interview. Hester said GM sees a total addressable market of $120 billion to $150 billion in energy storage and management. He declined to provide a revenue projection for GM Energy. GM's commercial service will offer similar capability to businesses, through larger stationary storage units as well as microgrids connected to hydrogen fuel cells developed by the automaker.
The commercial operations are already underway, while home energy systems will be available starting next year as the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV goes on sale. Travis Hester, vice president of GM's EV growth operations, said the new business unit offers customers and energy grids "resiliency." PG&E is working with GM Energy on a pilot test of a "bi-directional charger," which allows an EV to provide power to a home during a blackout. The EVs charge at night when rates are low and potentially provide energy back to the grid during peak hours. It also has partnered with Sunrun as a preferred installer of home energy systems.
The new business unit, called GM Energy, will consist of Ultium Home, Ultium Commercial and Ultium Charge 360 divisions. Ultium Home and Ultium Commercial will, as their names imply, supply energy storage for homes and businesses, respectively. GM Energy will also be involved with hydrogen fuel cells and solar energy products, GM said in its announcement. GM Energy will work with California’s Pacific Gas and Electric on a pilot program to test the concept using GM electric vehicles starting in 2023, GM said in the announcement. The new subsidiary is also working with solar energy provider SunPower, which will install solar panels on customers’ homes, GM said.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton allegedly fled his home in a truck driven by his wife, state Sen. Angela Paxton, on Monday to avoid being served a subpoena, a process server said in an affidavit filed in federal court. About 20 minutes later, Paxton left the house and Herrera approached him on the driveway. “I walked up the driveway approaching Mr. Paxton and called him by his name," Herrera wrote. “A few minutes later I saw Mr. Paxton ran from the door inside the garage towards the rear door behind the driver side," Herrera wrote. Police in Florida are investigating an incident where shots were fired outside of a Chuck E. Cheese during an altercation on Saturday, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff's office received multiple calls about shots fired near the Hillsborough County establishment just before 5p.m. According to detectives, an altercation broke out inside the Chuck E. Cheese, but a security guard relocated the crowd outside into the parking lot. "At some point, the woman lost possession of the firearm outside of Chuck E. Cheese, while another woman picked it up and shot at least one round into the air," the sheriff's office said. During the altercation, a white Audi crashed into the Chuck E. Cheese, and two women and a minor were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Automakers are also investing capital in off-road models and electric vehicles. "In the transition to electric vehicles, and where do automakers put their development money, it just isn't going to convertibles." Even counting those vehicles, sales last year were down by 26% since 2015. Jim Owens, head of Ford Mustang marketing, said only about 15% of the car's sales to consumers — 72,500 units in 2019 — are convertibles. Could we see a possible convertible electric Challenger in the future?

(CNN) General Motors is investing $760 million in its Toledo Propulsion Systems factory, which builds transmissions for gas-powered vehicles, so that it can make electric drive units for electric vehicles, too. The drive units will be used in GM electric trucks, the automaker said, including the GMC Hummer EV, which is currently in production, and the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV. It will be GM's first US engine or transmission factory adapted for electric vehicle-related production. Electric drive units include an electric motor, one-speed transmission and power electronics that bring power to and from the motor. For the now, at least, the factory will continue building transmissions for front- and rear-wheel-drive gas-powered vehicles along with the electric drive units, GM spokesman Dan Flores said.

New York (CNN Business) There's a lot of buyer interest in the electric Hummer now being offered by Chevrolet. But there's limited capacity to build them, and now General Motors has stopped taking orders for the massive EV. Between January and June, GM reported it delivered fewer than 400 of the pickup version of the Hummer. "We're excited to say this incredible demand has led to Hummer EV reservations being fully booked at this time," said a statement from the company. GM has a target to produce only zero-emission vehicles by the year 2035 , and other traditional automakers have similar goals.

Hertz says it plans to offer GM’s electric models across its business lines, including leisure customers and business travelers. Hertz Global Holdings has agreed to buy up to 175,000 electric vehicles from General Motors over five years, the latest example of rental companies bulking up on EVs. The companies said Tuesday that Hertz would buy EVs from across GM’s four main brands in North America—Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. The first orders would be for Chevy Bolt EVs starting early next year, the companies said.
"It's an enormous first step," Carlisle said, adding that GM is in talks about similar deals with other rental car companies. read moreAutomakers have cut reliance on low-profit, bulk sales to rental car agencies as supply chain problems curtailed production. Carlisle said GM expects to deliver electric vehicles to Hertz at close to retail profit margins. The first GM electric vehicles to ship to Hertz will be Chevrolet Bolt models starting early next year, Carlisle said. GM expects Hertz to deploy many of its EVs in Los Angeles and San Francisco, helping to meet California electric vehicle quotas.
General Motors has agreed to sell up to 175,000 electric vehicles to Hertz Global over the next five years, the companies announced Tuesday. The deal calls for GM to start supplying electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV to the rental car giant starting the first quarter of next year. GM is the latest automaker to strike such an agreement with Hertz following Tesla and Polestar, a Volvo-backed electric vehicle startup. Hertz has made increasing its fleet of electric vehicles a priority following its emergence from bankruptcy less than a year ago. Hertz aims to have a quarter of its fleet be electric by the end of 2024, while GM has announced plans to exclusively offer electric vehicles by 2035.

April 19 (Reuters) - Magna International and LG Electronics are constructing a factory in the Mexican city of Ramos Airzpe that will supply electric vehicle components to General Motors Co, starting in 2023. The plant, which is being built by the LG Magna e-Powertrain joint venture, will make EV motors, inverters and on-board chargers. GM said a year ago that it planned to invest more than $1 billion in its Ramos Arizpe assembly plant, which will begin building EVs in 2023. The automaker has not said where it plans to build the new electric versions of those vehicles, which are due to begin production in 2023. LG Magna e-Powertrain said its new facility will be the joint venture's first production base in North America and is expected to create 400 jobs.
