Aid workers reached more than 90% of targeted vaccine coverage in the first phase of the UN-led campaign, according to the UN’s agency for Palestine refugees, UNRWA. Israel’s offensive in Gaza, launched after the Hamas-led October 7 attacks, has precipitated a humanitarian crisis and flattened critical infrastructure. Meanwhile, Israeli aid restrictions have severely depleted fuel stocks, chlorine and spare parts, stifling water production, purification and sewage pumping, according to the agency. Then in August, an 11-month old boy became the first person in Gaza in 25 years to be diagnosed with polio. Relief workers described repeated challenges to the campaign rollout – especially in northern Gaza – citing Israeli evacuation orders, roads damaged by bombardment, increased hostilities and scant fuel supplies.

Washington CNN —The Biden administration said Friday that it has finalized tariff hikes on certain Chinese-made products that the president first announced in May. The administration’s increases come as Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have clashed over tariffs on the campaign trail. Trump implemented sweeping tariffs on about $300 billion of Chinese-made products when he was in office. “Today’s finalized tariff increases will target the harmful policies and practices of the People’s Republic of China that continue to impact American workers and businesses,” US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said in a press release. China is expected to retaliate by increasing tariffs on US-made goods.

United Airlines said Friday that it plans to offer inflight Wi-Fi from SpaceX's Starlink for free on its hundreds of jetliners, the biggest inflight internet deal yet for the SpaceX business. The team-up comes as airlines have been investing in faster inflight Wi-Fi, sometimes offering it for free, in a bid to attract higher paying customers like business travelers. Delta Air Lines announced in early 2023 that onboard internet would be free for members of its SkyMiles loyalty program. New York City CNN —New US men’s national team coach Mauricio Pochettino said on Friday that his aim is nothing short of competing with – and beating – the best teams in the world. Finally, the 52-year-old Argentine was announced this past Tuesday, just minutes before the men’s national team labored to an uninspiring 1-1 draw in a friendly match against New Zealand in Cincinnati. Pochettino’s new charges have now failed to win their past four matches, a fact surely not lost on a head coach universally known as Poch, even if he wasn’t watching from inside the stadium. The recent hiring of U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Emma Hayes was a coup for the USWNT, as the Blues legend won no fewer than 16 trophies in her 12-year stint with the Chelsea’s women’s team. But does the new hire read anything into being unveiled on Friday 13th, a date many people are superstitious about?

Economists have long called for an overhaul of the nation's retirement age laws, currently among the world's lowest, which was set in an era of lower life expectancies. Raising the retirement age would help ease local governments' pension pool cash crunch, Sheana Yue, an economist from Oxford Economics said. Still, "more needs to be done to improve retirement adequacy," Maybank's Tay said, while stating that China needs a stronger pension plan and diversified investment avenues to ensure sustainable retirement savings. China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security has added a few tools for citizens to check their indicated retirement age on its website and mobile app. China may roll out "another round of delay in the late 2030s, especially if China's pension fund balance is tight," Xu cautioned.
