Kvitova downs Serbian qualifier to reach last 16
  + stars: | 2023-07-08 | by ( Pritha Sarkar | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The Czech ninth seed needed four set points to seal the first set as menacing dark clouds hovered over Court Two, with her 225th ranked opponent slapping a service return long. A clearly distracted Stevanovic struggled to forget the incident and ended up being broken after Kvitova's service return kissed the line. Following a two-hour rain break, Kvitova appeared determined to make her greater firepower count, although the final game turned into an almighty tussle of wills. After watching three match points disappear thanks to Stevanovic's dogged resilience, Kvitova finally triumphed on her fourth attempt to seal a last-16 showdown with either 2019 U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu or Tunisian sixth seed Ons Jabeur. "I love playing on grass and when my serve is working well I love it even more."

CNN —There was a period during Andy Murray’s second-round match against fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas where it seemed the former champion was going to roll back the years and produce another memorable victory on Wimbledon’s Centre Court. On resumption on Friday, Tsitsipas – 12 years younger than Murray – took the upper hand, drawing level after a fourth-set tie-break and securing the final set to leave Murray pondering whether he’ll play at his home grand slam again. Andy Murray lost in five sets to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Visionhaus/Getty ImagesWhen asked how confident he was of competing at Wimbledon next year, Murray told reporters: “I don’t know. “Regardless of the atmosphere and those things, it’s still very, very disappointing to be sitting here right now.”

Haddad Maia beats Cirstea in nick of time before rain sets in
  + stars: | 2023-07-08 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, July 8 (Reuters) - Beatriz Haddad Maia moved into the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career with an emphatic 6-2 6-2 victory over Sorana Cirstea on Saturday, a minute before play was suspended due to rain. Haddad Maia, who became the first Brazilian woman to reach the top 10 in the WTA rankings after her semi-final run at Roland Garros a month ago, shot out of the blocks on a cloudy morning to convert two early breaks and take a 3-0 lead. Cirstea could be heard urging herself to "Fight, fight, fight," and although she fought back with a break of her own, Haddad Maia attacked the Romanian's weaker second serve to break once again and serve out the opening set. But that only delayed the inevitable as Haddad Maia ground Cirstea down in her final service game and clinched victory on her first match point. And just in time as the rain came down, the players scrambled off, and the covers came on under grey London skies.

Wildcard Svitolina will be looking to get the better of Azarenka for the first time, having lost to the former Grand Slam champion in their last five meetings. Yeah, I'm looking forward to this challenge," Svitolina said after she dispatched Sofia Kenin in the third round. "It's another match but in a way, a lot of Ukrainians will be watching, will be supporting me. While Svitolina took a year off for the birth of her daughter Skai with husband and fellow tennis player Gael Monfils, her return to the Tour in March was seamless. Davidovich Fokina had looked solid on serve throughout so his decision was all the more baffling. Royal destinations you need to visit in the UK

A version of this story appeared in the July 7 edition of CNN’s Royal News, a weekly dispatch bringing you the inside track on Britain’s royal family. Research in 2011 by Visit Britain found that around 60% of tourists to the UK are likely to visit places associated with the royal family, according to Ross Bennett-Cook, a visiting lecturer at the School of Architecture and Cities at London’s University of Westminster. While there is no more recent data on royal sites specifically, in 2022 Visit Britain found that history and heritage were the biggest pull factors for tourists. Peter Titmuss/UCG/Universal Images Group/Getty ImagesCornwall: Dear to local and international tourists alike, Cornwall, on the southwestern tip of the UK pointing out into the Atlantic Ocean, is also a special destination for the royal family. The medieval parish church of St Mary Magdalene is regularly used as a place of worship by members of the royal family and dates back to the 16th-century.

Inspired Eubanks upsets Briton Norrie

"There's tons of really good tennis players who play professional tennis who never get the chance to play the number one Brit at Wimbledon in an atmosphere like this," Eubanks said. For a player making his Wimbledon debut, Eubanks showed no signs of nerves as Norrie failed to win a point off the American's serve until the seventh game of the match. Rallies were also in short supply as Eubanks mixed power and finesse with his serve and volley game to baffle Norrie to take the opening set. Errors crept into his game in the second set, however, which allowed Norrie to race into a 3-0 lead and the Briton, egged on by a vocal home crowd, levelled the match. Eubanks's power game seemed unsustainable, but the American broke early in the third set and clinched it.

Pairing a steel resolve with his fabled metal hip, the 36-year-old was allowing British tennis fans to dream. Middle-aged men in well-tailored suits jumped to their feet, revealing flamboyant cufflinks as they pumped their fists to celebrate winning shots. Women clapped hands above their heads, beseeching Murray -- the man who, a decade ago, had ended the 77-year wait for a British Wimbledon champion -- to finish off his youthful rival and write another chapter. Disappointment drenched the arena, tempered with admiration for the Scottish warrior who has done so much for British tennis. When asked how confident he was that he would be competing at Wimbledon next year, Murray said: "I don't know.

His 31st consecutive match win at Wimbledon sent him into the last 16 of a Grand Slam for the 61st time in which he will face Poland's 17th seed Hubert Hurkacz. "He was two points away from extending the match for another day," Djokovic said on court. With the Centre Court roof closed and the lights on, Djokovic took the second set in half an hour. The 24-year-old Greek trailed by two sets to one after twice Wimbledon champion Murray edged ahead in three tight sets on Thursday night before Wimbledon's curfew halted play mid-battle. Errors began to come from his racket and Tsitsipas sensed his moment with a break in the third game -- the first time he had taken Murray's serve in the match. Tsitsipas forged 5-3 ahead but Murray hung in to test the Greek's nerve. Two match points went begging but at the third time of asking an ace ended Murray's dream.
