Green alliance crisis is more than just a US drama

Back in March the Net-Zero Insurance Alliance (NZIA) boasted 30 members, representing about 15% of global premium volume. Now the NZIA, a key financial forum for insurers to set decarbonisation targets and a part of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), has shrunk to just 13 companies. Even those who choose to stay in the NZIA risk losing business due to state politicians pursuing a “war on woke”. NZIA, part of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero set up by U.N. climate envoy Mark Carney, requires members to commit to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. In rapid succession Japanese insurers Sompo Holdings, MS&AD and Tokio Marine as well as Australia’s QBE Insurance quit the net-zero alliance in late May.

Then, a deep dive into MrBeast and what his YouTube empire says about the future of the internet. Reddit came along and said, oh, we need to protect Reddit from the rise of these large language models. So I don’t think they’re totally out of the woods. But I don’t think people would say it was a golden age for how safe the platforms fell to use. But I want to challenge you on this, because I don’t necessarily think that it’s a bad thing if we have past peak trust and safety.

A group of music publishers filed a lawsuit Wednesday alleging "massive" copyright infringement. With violations of about 1,700 songs up to $150,000 each, the lawsuit could total about $250 million. A group of music publishers allege Twitter has allowed "massive" copyright infringements to happen, and claim the company profits from it. However, the music copyright suit only partially relates to Musk's ownership, and has been years in the making. The suit from a group of 17 music publishers, all members of the National Music Publishers' Association, alleges Twitter has operated for years as the only major social media platform that does not pay licensing fees to music labels to have their copyrighted music on their platform.

REUTERS/Henry RomeroMEXICO CITY/MONTERREY, Mexico, June 15 (Reuters) - Mexican authorities urged people across the country to take safety precautions on Thursday as an unusual late Spring heat wave sent temperatures soaring, with cooler days possibly weeks away. said Abigail Lopez, a nurse in normally sunny but temperate Mexico City who said she was drinking more water and wearing lighter clothes to try to beat the heat. In Mexico City, children splashed around in public fountains and commuters shielded themselves from the sun with umbrellas. "In the last 20 years, we haven't had such a long heat wave," he said.

Exports and factory output in the world's second-largest economy tumbled in May, as looming downturns force the United States and Europe to pare back orders for goods made in China. Some factories closed or are struggling to pay wages or severance for laid-off workers as a result, according to Chinese labour researchers. "We believe that the drop in manufacturing orders and that factory closures will continue," said Aidan Chau, researcher at Hong Kong-based rights group China Labour Bulletin (CLB). Labour unions were central to the Communist Party's proletariat beginnings but play only a marginal role in modern authoritarian China. However, some analysts say factory strikes could become a political headache for the Party.

A group of 17 music publishers sued Twitter on Wednesday, accusing it of copyright infringement on about 1,700 songs, and is seeking as much as $250 million in damages, the latest headache for the social media platform owned by Elon Musk. The publishers filed the suit in Federal District Court in Nashville, saying Twitter violated copyright law by allowing users to post music to the platform without permission. Negotiations between Twitter and the music industry to put broad licensing agreements into place had broken down months ago. The suit detailed what the publishers say is Twitter’s failure to police rampant infringement of music copyrights on the service. The post had 221,000 views and 15,000 likes, the suit said, but not the permission of the song’s publishers.

A series of bold investmentsExperts say much of India’s outbound growth trajectory is being driven by improvements in infrastructure and an expansion in its aviation sector. Morgenshtern says the rise in outbound tourism from India is the result of investment not just by the government but by private airlines as well. Air India, for example, is fully owned by Indian conglomerate Tata Sons. As part of its efforts to expand its offerings, the company announced earlier this year it will be operating flights under both the Air India brand and Air India Express, having previously merged the latter with Tata’s other low-cost airline, AirAsia India. In February, Air India purchased nearly 500 new planes, the most ever bought in one order by a single airline.

Accenture looks to power AI efforts with $3 billion investment

June 13 (Reuters) - Accenture said on Tuesday it will invest $3 billion over three years into its data and AI practice, doubling the number of employees that are working with the cutting-edge technology at the IT consulting firm. The company, which consults and services various clients on generative AI projects, said it will have 80,000 people working on AI as it hires, buys other companies and trains more employees. Accenture did not say by when it would hit that number, but added that the investment was aimed to help companies across 19 industries. The firm's move underscores a rush among companies to burnish their offerings with generative AI - technology that the likes of Microsoft (MSFT.O) and Alphabet (GOOGL.O) say will change the way many jobs are done. On Monday, Salesforce (CRM.N) doubled its venture capital fund for generative AI startups to $500 million and unveiled an AI Cloud service that hopes to attract enterprises by offering its AI-powered products under one umbrella.

Starbucks Workers United said Tuesday that dozens of the coffee chain's U.S. stores aren't allowing employees to decorate for Pride month. A Starbucks spokesperson told CNBC that the company's security and safety manual provides broad guidance for stores around decorations. Some Massachusetts workers were told that there weren't enough labor hours to schedule partners to decorate, the union said. And managers told employees in Maryland that some people didn't feel represented by the "umbrella of pride," according to the labor group. Oklahoma Starbucks workers were also prohibited from hanging Pride flags in store windows.

June 12 (Reuters) - Salesforce (CRM.N) on Monday doubled its venture capital fund for generative AI startups to $500 million and unveiled the AI Cloud service that hopes to attract enterprises by offering the company's AI-powered products under one umbrella. AI Cloud will include Salesforce's products from the Einstein service to workplace-messaging app Slack and data analysis software Tableau. The move underscores the race among technology companies to incorporate their tools with generative AI, which can create new text, imagery and other content based on inputs from past data. Along with the company's own offerings, AI Cloud will host the large-language models (LLMs) - the core software of artificial intelligence systems - from providers such as Amazon Web Services, Anthropic and Cohere. Salesforce said it plans to ensure data privacy for businesses using such offerings by helping prevent the LLMs from retaining sensitive customer information.

Apple execs didn't mention AI once during the company's WWDC keynote. It was a deliberate choice and a stark contrast to other Big Tech companies that have embraced the term. During Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon's first quarter earnings calls in April, AI was cumulatively mentioned 168 times, for example. Most other Big Tech companies would likely tout these as "AI innovations" to appeal to the current enthusiasm around the term. The word wasn't mentioned one time during the entire keynote, even though many rivals would likely use the word to describe the Vision Pro headset.

His previous documents showed his net worth was just $319,000, and that he still had student loans. Ron DeSantis may have greatly increased his net worth in the last year. Those documents showed the governor, now 44, had a net worth of just $318,986.99, didn't own property, and carried $21,284.92 in student loans. Also, if DeSantis didn't receive his book advance until 2023, then the Florida documents may not contain it but the federal documents would have to. Each year, the law school graduates elect a member of their class to deliver a speech, and this year they chose Ms. Mohammed, an activist devoted to the Palestinian cause. Although her remarks would later be presented as a lightning bolt of antisemitism, she began uncontroversially, talking about the pain and loss of Covid and how it shaped her cohort’s first semesters in law school. “Let us remember that Gaza, just this week, has been bombed with the world watching,” she said at one point. But it was the fierceness she brought to her denunciation of “Israeli settler colonialism” and CUNY’s collaboration with “the fascist N.Y.P.D.” that especially inflamed the political class, even if her own audience, including the law school dean, seemed receptive. In a seemingly off-the-cuff remark during his inaugural speech Monday, Tinubu declared, “the fuel subsidy is gone,” adding that it was unsustainable. The last time the government tried to remove fuel subsidies in 2012, it sparked nationwide protests. Fuel subsidies are a drain on public finances and many argue that they have led to widespread abuse and corruption. Previous governments have tried unsuccessfully to remove the fuel subsidy, which has kept gas prices artificially low, although they have steadily climbed through the years. Fuel subsidies were not sustainable, but ending them “abruptly” without provision for economic and social consequences was “reckless,” he added.

The apparent alteration of a mosque belonging to the Hui ethnic group in Najiaying village, Yunnan province comes amid a sweeping campaign unleashed by China’s leader Xi Jinping to “sinicize” religion. Ma Ju, a prominent Hui activist who now lives in the United States and has kept close contact with Najiaying residents, said about 30 people were arrested. Clashes broke out between police officers and Najiaying residents outside the mosque. In 2018, thousands of Hui residents in Ningxia, in the country’s northwest, staged a sit-in protest for three days to prevent authorities from demolishing a newly constructed mosque. “After they trampled on your dignity, they will suppress you step by step, and assimilate the Hui ethnic group completely into the Han, generation by generation.
