CNN —The world awoke Wednesday morning to the latest threat from Russia’s former president and prime minister Dmitry Medvedev. He’s like the fictional figure who appears out of nowhere, stares ahead with a blank face and slowly runs his finger across his throat: a none-too-subtle message from the boss. Or is he speaking for the Russian president? Shortly before he died, he had called Russia’s war against Ukraine “a fascist invasion.” The cause of death remains unexplained. With the war in Ukraine – a pivotal moment in Russia’s history – Putin remains at the center of the mafia-like government he has built.

And it may seem like the simple solution is to keep young kids off of social media platforms entirely, but that's not realistic for everyone. The age of 13 is "too early" for children to use social media, he said earlier this year . When you approach them about their online activities, you shouldn't only ask about whether or not they're on social media. Create a family plan for social media useMake a decision, as a family, about these key factors:What age can children in our family start using social media? To help your kids avoid developing a reliance on social media for connection, guide them to other activities for social interaction, Doumas says.

  + stars: | 2023-05-31 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
CNN —A necklace carrying the tooth of a prehistoric shark known as a megalodon has been discovered in the wreckage of the Titanic during a digital scan of the sunken ship. For more than 100 years, the necklace has sat at the bottom of the ocean following the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, according to Magellan, a deep water investigation company that carried out the scan. Images from the scan show a gold necklace with a tooth of a megalodon, scientifically known as Otodus megalodon, a prehistoric shark that lived more than 23 million years ago. The necklace was discovered by Magellan during a project to produce a full-size digital scan of the Titanic, which the company says is the largest underwater scanning project in history. The megalodon tooth necklace is pictured in the center of this image.

“The complexity and difficulty of the national security issues we now face have increased significantly,” Xi said Tuesday at a meeting of the party’s National Security Commission, state news agency Xinhua reported. Since coming to power a decade ago, Xi has made national security a key paradigm that permeates all aspects of China’s governance, experts say. He has expanded the concept of national security to cover everything from politics, economy, defense, culture and ecology to cyberspace. Under Xi’s notion of “comprehensive national security,” China has introduced a raft of legislation to protect itself against perceived threats, including laws on counter-terrorism, counter-espionage, cybersecurity, foreign non-government organizations, national intelligence and data security. In Hong Kong, a sweeping national security law was imposed by Beijing to stamp out dissent after huge democracy protests roiled the city.

The apparent alteration of a mosque belonging to the Hui ethnic group in Najiaying village, Yunnan province comes amid a sweeping campaign unleashed by China’s leader Xi Jinping to “sinicize” religion. Ma Ju, a prominent Hui activist who now lives in the United States and has kept close contact with Najiaying residents, said about 30 people were arrested. Clashes broke out between police officers and Najiaying residents outside the mosque. In 2018, thousands of Hui residents in Ningxia, in the country’s northwest, staged a sit-in protest for three days to prevent authorities from demolishing a newly constructed mosque. “After they trampled on your dignity, they will suppress you step by step, and assimilate the Hui ethnic group completely into the Han, generation by generation.

CNN —China has rejected a United States proposal for Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to meet with his Chinese counterpart Li Shangfu at the Shangri-La Dialogue Security Forum in Singapore this week, according to a Pentagon statement. In the statement, the Pentagon said China had declined an invitation extended in early May for a meeting, but said the refusal would not deter the US from seeking better lines of communication. In response, the Chinese Embassy in the US questioned the sincerity and significance of the invitation, pointing to US sanctions imposed on Chinese officials, institutions and companies. The Wall Street Journal first reported China’s refusal to participate in a meeting between the defense chiefs. Austin told CNN earlier this year that he had not spoken to his Chinese counterpart in “months,” and China has continued to rebuff requests for meetings and phone calls, defense officials said.

A ship sails in the Taiwan Strait, as seen from Pingtan island, the closest point to Taiwan, in China's southeast Fujian province on April 8, 2023. The Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Saturday accompanied by two other ships, Taiwan's defense ministry said, in the latest uptick in military tensions over the island Beijing claims as its own territory. Taiwan's military closely monitored the group using its own ships and aircraft and "responded appropriately", the ministry said in a short statement. The Shandong participated in Chinese military drills around Taiwan last month, operating in the western Pacific. In March of last year, the Shandong sailed through the Taiwan Strait, just hours before the Chinese and U.S. presidents were due to talk.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told an audience Tuesday that Russia was going through "difficult times" as its invasion of Ukraine continues, but said national pride was growing. "Yes, Russia is going through difficult times now; things have never been easy, but, still, today we are seeing a moment of our common consolidation, with our national pride being sharpened," Putin told an awards ceremony, according to comments reported by state news agency Tass. Elsewhere, the Kremlin said Wednesday that it's premature to talk about a peaceful settlement, with Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov saying the preconditions for an end to the conflict did not yet exist. When asked by reporters which peace proposals were closest to Russia's position, Peskov said:"It is premature to talk about this as long as there are no prerequisites for a peaceful settlement. The special military operation continues," as Russia calls its unprovoked invasion of its neighbor.

Suzy Welch told CNBC that Gen Z, those born from the mid-1990s to early 2010s, wasn't afraid of unemployment like previous generations. Welch told CNBC that while Gen Z wasn't promoting joblessness by choice, their perspective on the issue had shifted "far away" from previous generations. They think: 'We're going to be together for as long as we're together, then I'm going to be funemployed, and then I'm going to move on to my next engagement.'" However, Gen Z has indicated they're more concerned about work-life balance and less willing to put up with toxic work culture.
