NYC Mayor Eric Adams's office is using AI to clone his voice into languages like Mandarin for robocalls. People have even asked him if he speaks Mandarin, Adams said at a press conference on Monday. Since March 2022, Adams' office has reached over 4 million residents through these calls, a spokesperson for the mayor told Insider. Adams' office did not comment on the concern or specify how many languages the mayor speaks. "Beyond Utopia" attracted interest at Sundance from streamers like Amazon's Prime Video and Netflix. Interest peaked four years ago at the Sundance Film Festival, fueled by Amazon and Netflix, which paid a record $10 million for the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez doc "Knock Down the House." In the crime realm, WME advised, Netflix was seeking films based on big, well-known cases and scams like "Dahmer" and "Tinder Swindler." Filmmakers point to streamers' self-censorship and 'cold feet' over sensitive topicsSome filmmakers said there are still champions at the streamers for documentaries that push the envelope. "Beyond Utopia" is among a number of recent films that have been snubbed by the big streamers, despite winning awards and buzz.

The first step listed in the city’s AI action plan is establishing an “AI Steering Committee” of city agency stakeholders. The city said it will publish an annual AI progress report to communicate the city’s updates and implementation of the plan. Also on Monday, city officials said the government was piloting the first citywide AI-powered chatbot to help business owners navigate operating and growing businesses in New York City. The AI chatbot, already available in beta on the official city of New York website, was trained on information from more than 2,000 NYC Business web pages. In a statement announcing the AI action plan, Mayor Adams acknowledged “the potential pitfalls and associated risks these technologies present,” and pledged to be “clear-eyed” about these.

In a pretrial court filing, James’ office estimated that Trump exaggerated his wealth by as much as $3.6 billion. They've also called accountants Donald Bender and Camron Harris, whose firms Trump hired to prepare his financial statements. A retired Deutsche Bank official testified the financial statements were key to Trump securing hundreds of millions of dollars in loans. Weisselberg acknowledged that information in Trump’s financial statements wasn’t always accurate, such as valuing his penthouse based on the wrong size. In a decision last month, Engoron resolved the lawsuit's top claim, ruling that Trump committed years of fraud by inflating the value of assets in his financial statements.

The dazzling views of Central Park come with a dark side. From tiny yellow warblers to large, elegantly marked woodpeckers, their journeys end at the building, Circa Central Park, when they crash into glass they can’t see. The deaths have brought outrage from bird advocates, shame on social media, disapproval from neighbors and even stronger disapproval from the residents’ own children. Circa Central Park certainly isn’t the only bird-killing building in the city, but it appears to be among the worst. Last year, the number of window strikes at Circa put it in the top three among buildings monitored by NYC Audubon.

NEW YORK (AP) —Efforts to turn what was once the largest landfill site in the world into a public park hit a milestone Sunday with the opening of the first section open to the public, New York City officials said. The 21-acre (8.5-hectare) North Park section of what has become Freshkills Park includes pedestrian and cycling paths, an overlook deck, bird viewing tower and composting restroom that uses no water. The 2,200-acre (890-hectare) Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island was once the largest landfill site in the world. For five decades after its opening in 1948, it was the principal landfill for New York City’s garbage. The last barge of regular trash was delivered in 2001 when then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani closed the site, partly in response to Staten Island residents who had complained about being the city’s dumping ground.

And New York City has had success transforming single-use office districts, most notably Lower Manhattan's financial district, into more vibrant mixed-use places. Times Square is one of those, according to Tom Harris, president of the Times Square Alliance, which represents the district's businesses. AdvertisementAdvertisement"I'm not negating it, but certainly the opportunities south of Times Square, to the west of Times Square, are a little bit better for development of the housing stock," he said. The mix of businesses around Times Square has changed in a way that could be appealing to potential residents. Times Square lost 179 businesses during the pandemic, but has since welcomed more than 180 new businesses into the neighborhood, according to the Times Square Alliance.

But prices are shooting up in Jersey City as its neighbors refuse to build. AdvertisementAdvertisementNew Yorkers have been taking notice of Jersey City real estate for years, and its popularity as an alternative to the ever-less-affordable housing market in the city is growing. Between 2010 and 2018, Hudson County, which includes Jersey City, built housing at more than twice the rate that New York City did. New housing in Jersey City is overwhelmingly market rate rather than being explicitly built as affordable housing for lower- and middle-income residents. "The issues facing Jersey City tenants are multifaceted, but the primary concern is to guarantee housing stability."
