People have died after drinking tea brewed from unwashed poppy seeds. Members of the House of Representatives and Senate have proposed legislation “to prohibit the distribution and sale of contaminated poppy seeds in order to prevent harm, addiction, and further deaths from morphine-contaminated poppy seeds.” The bill was one of several on the agenda for a September 10 House hearing. On the other hand, tea made from large quantities of unwashed poppy seeds could lead to addiction and overdose, doctors said. The US Drug Enforcement Administration said unwashed poppy seeds can kill when used alone or in combination with other drugs. The US Department of Justice has brought criminal prosecutions over the sale of unwashed poppy seeds.

At least 125 places from the West Coast to the Rockies have tied or broken all-time October heat records since the month began. It’s another reminder that extreme heat is no longer confined to the summer as the world warms due to fossil fuel pollution. “If we continue to warm the plant by burning fossil fuels, late-season heat waves like this will become much more common.”California has been at the epicenter of the extreme heat. The record-breaking heat began before the calendar flipped to October. Phoenix could reach two consecutive weeks of record-breaking heat as it remains stuck in it into at least midweek.

Before this week's downside price gap, it's worth noting that Nike was testing a major resistance level into last week. To add to this "confluence of resistance," we can also see the 200-day moving average looming large, currently sitting just above $91. The weekly chart can provide some additional context as to what the recent upswing means relative to the long-term trend for Nike. The long-term trend has been decidedly negative for NKE, with price remaining below the 150-week moving average since Q2 2022. Nike also sits below a downward-sloping 40-week moving average, which is essentially the same as the 200-day moving average on the daily chart.

Much of the office market may be mired in a downturn, but demand has been strong for high-end space. New office construction has dropped off sharply, leading to a potential upcoming shortage. That demand has persisted even as office construction has been stifled by higher interest rates and inflation, which have pushed up costs. Worries over the health of the office market have also made lenders reluctant to finance new development. 8 million square feet of that is pre-leased, meaning that there is only about 10 million square feet of upcoming available top quality space.

Workers say they're struggling with mobile ordersEven former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said in a May LinkedIn post that current Starbucks leadership should "reinvent the mobile ordering and payment platform." "We believe a visit to Starbucks should be effortless and delightful, whether ordering through the Starbucks app or at our stores." Still, some workers — whom the company calls "partners" — have pointed to issues with the mobile ordering system in interviews with BI. Starbucks' rewards program is a big driver of all those digital orders, a partner at a Starbucks store in South Dakota told BI. "They deserve to have that moment where things are corrected and they're leaving happy, but we can't deliver on it always," the partner told BI.

Hard seltzers, spiked seltzers, and their ilk have been marketed as lighter than traditional alcoholic beverages. In the 2010s, the hard seltzers started to pop up, with names like White Claw and Truly, both of which launched in 2016. Advertisement"During the pandemic, hard seltzers really blew up, and I think hard seltzers are one of those ones that were perceived as a little bit of a better-for-you option," said Kaleigh Theriault, an associate director of beverage-alcohol thought leadership at NIQ, a market research firm. The market got saturated, and people started to realize there could be a lot more to canned alcohol than beer and hard seltzers. "So companies are having to innovate more and more, and that has led to some higher-ABV canned cocktails."

The decision underscores the fractious relationship Starbucks has had with organized labor as more and more workers at its stores unionize. In 2022, when Schultz was interim CEO, he attended a company event in Long Beach, California, to address and improve working conditions at Starbucks stores. A million dollars isn't the symbol of wealth that it used to be, but saving that much for retirement is still rare. In fact, among those currently saving for retirement, 57% say the amount they're hoping to save is less than $1 million. If you withdraw money from your portfolio too fast, you drastically decrease the chances that the money will last for your entire retirement. Divide that figure by 4%, and you'll arrive at the amount you'll need to retire with: $2.5 million. If you plan to retire with $1 million, by the same calculation you can expect to withdraw $40,000 in your first year.
