In video from the visit, Ms. Berry looked on as tidy rows of children filed into their village school, where they would be provided their single balanced meal of the day. The prospect of a hearty lunch encouraged their parents to send them to school, Ms. Berry said in the footage, even those parents who may have been reluctant. She was acting as an emissary for Watch Hunger Stop, an initiative organized by the designer Michael Kors in partnership with the United Nations World Food Program, to provide meals to schools in developing regions around the world. She and Ms. Berry have since appeared in online campaign imagery, on television, and in promotional videos for the program, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this month. Donations are solicited in stores and through a link on the Michael Kors website.

You’ve got your down payment and you’ve been approved for a mortgage. If you want to know the actual price of owning a home, throw in closing costs, moving expenses, homeowner’s insurance, private mortgage insurance (P.M.I.) With a down payment of that size, lenders typically require P.M.I. So, that average-value three-bedroom home ended up requiring an outlay of about $623,290 over 13.2 years of ownership. Mortgage payments alone accounted for $270,593 of that, with maintenance and repairs adding up to $192,139.

I don’t have a proper night stand and I don’t usually read before bedtime. However, my metaphorical night stand includes “Moby-Dick,” “Don Quixote,” three of Virginia Woolf’s lesser-known novels (“The Voyage Out,” “Night and Day” and “The Years”) and the complete work of Beatrix Potter. (Books written to be consumed at one sitting or in a day don’t interest me.) Rather, they read word by word, sentence by sentence, and they ponder over an unfamiliar word choice, a fleeting gesture, the shadow of an image, and the ripple of a sentence seen in the following sentence. It’s a testament to the art of reading with not only five senses but also with memory and imagination.

At the same time, Spiegel was forced to reckon with charges against the lack of diversity in Snap's workforce. Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel Michael Kovac/Getty ImagesAt an internal meeting in July 2020, Spiegel said that the company keeps its diversity reports private because releasing data would reinforce the idea that minority groups are underrepresented in the tech industry. Later that month, though, the company released its first diversity report. The report broke down employee demographics going back all the way back to when Snap was first founded in 2011. It showed that Black and Latinx employees comprised less than 11% of the company's staff and less than a third of the company's staff identified as women.

TORONTO (AP) — When the Hollywood actors union announced a strike this summer, Cameron Bailey, the longtime chief executive of the Toronto International Film Festival, dusted off his COVID-19 playbook. “This is the nature of running a festival,” Bailey says. A rainbow is seen over apartments in Wandsworth on the River Thames as UK house prices continue to fall, in London, Britain, August 26, 2023. A senior official at the Office for National Statistics asked Britain's statistics regulator to review the outcome of its upcoming work on how it revised its estimates of the swings in the economy around the coronavirus pandemic period. The ONS collects a lot of data itself through surveys of businesses and households, but relies on government departments and other agencies for certain numbers. On Friday, revised data from the ONS showed that Britain's economy performed more strongly than previously thought in its recovery from the pandemic and was ahead of other big European countries at the end of 2021 rather than lagging behind them. Destruction near the village of Robotyne, in the Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine, late last month. For their part, Ukrainian military officials refrained from making any sweeping claims. Ukrainians forces enjoyed surprising successes earlier in the war by holding Kyiv, the capital, and repelling Russian forces at the end of March last year. The Ukrainian military aims to reclaim land in the south and east of the country. To reach that city, Ukrainian forces would have to fully break through the defenses around Verbove and then breach additional layers.

A new study by HouseFresh aimed to find the “dirtiest” cities in the United States by analyzing 12.3 million sanitation-related complaints made to 311 systems across the country. The remaining 26 cities were ranked based on the number of sanitation complaints per 100,000 residents. By this metric, Baltimore was found to be the “dirtiest” city, with 42,295 complaints per 100,000 residents. New York landed in 17th place, with 3,728 complaints per 100,000 residents, or less than a tenth of Baltimore’s rate. Four Brooklyn ZIP codes were among the city’s dirtiest 10.

Corporate bond yields have been a boon for income investors. For many, investment-grade corporate debt is the sweet spot right now, and still has yields that haven't been seen in years. Investment-grade bonds are rated Baa or above by Moody's or BBB and above by S & P and Fitch. "You could get to 5% to 6% type of yield numbers, without taking much credit risk, without taking much duration risk." "There should be lower spread volatility compared to other [corporate bond] sectors such as high yield, floating rate loans and emerging markets as well," he said.

By the time of his death in a plane crash this week, Yevgeny Prigozhin had come to symbolize the criminal trajectory of the Russian state. In the 1980s, he had been imprisoned in the Soviet Union, after which he experienced a rags-to-riches transformation from street vendor in post-Soviet Russia to close associate of President Vladimir Putin. Prigozhin’s remarkable portfolio ranged from elite catering to election meddling in the U.S. to running the Wagner Group, a government-funded private military apparatus.

If you think you’re throwing away money on rent, take heart: With interest rates on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages now at 20-year highs, homeowners with loans may be worried about the very same thing. So, imagine for a moment that your monthly rent payment did go toward a mortgage payment instead. How much space would that buy in your city? A recent study by Point2 answered this question for renters in the 100 largest U.S. cities, using the local median price per square foot to find just how much space the local average rent could afford if it were a mortgage payment. The study assumed a 20 percent down payment and a monthly 30-year-fixed-rate mortgage payment at 6.78 percent (the rate at the time the study was published), and factored in local homeowners’ insurance and property taxes on the median-priced home.

In theory, these higher interest rates push down demand and slow inflation by forcing companies to cut prices to attract stretched-thin customers. And Americans have been spending right through the higher interest rates: Personal consumption expenditures and retail sales numbers have continued to forge upward. But eventually, this attitude will wane as people realize that the higher rates aren't a flash in the pan. The Treasury yield curve measures the different interest rates that are paid out on various bonds issued by the US government. Trump had to agree, for example, to make no threats on social media against co-defendants, witnesses and the 30 unindicted co-conspirators. The former president has excoriated special counsel Jack Smith, who indicted him twice, on social media and in speeches. Elliot Williams, a former federal prosecutor and CNN legal analyst, said that the terms were fair and did not infringe on Trump’s rights. Trump’s many late-night social media eruptions will make it hard for observers to believe that he will stick to the conditions to which he’s agreed.
