WARSAW, Oct 18 (Reuters) - The Polish central bank does not have ample room to increase interest rates amid an expected economic slowdown, central banker Cezary Kochalski said on Tuesday. Poland's inflation would remain high in coming months and the first quarter of 2023 but would not exceed 20%, Kochalski told TVN24 television in an interview. Poland has plenty of room for interest rate rises, and a hike by 100 basis points might be needed in November, fellow central banker Joanna Tyrowicz was quoted as saying earlier on Tuesday. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Register"I'm far from this opinion, it seems there's no room for that," Kochalski said commenting on Tyrowicz words. "Further radical interest rate hikes would bring inflation down but at a very high cost for the society," he said.
The typical fall "hiring boom" in the entertainment industry, especially at the big streamers, is quieter this year. Recruiters and job seekers said the job market is slow, though data and analytics pros are still in demand. Autumn is typically ripe for hiring in Hollywood. "The streamers are always in a hiring boom this time of year but you're not seeing that anymore." Data and tech jobs are still hot, said Sucherman, calling it a sector of the entertainment industry "that is expanding, not contracting."

REUTERS/Kacper Pempel/File PhotoWARSAW, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Poland's central bank Governor Adam Glapinski and four other rate setters threatened legal action on Tuesday against some members of the Monetary Policy Council over public statements they have made about policy. The other members of the MPC are Tyrowicz, Litwiniuk and Ludwik Kotecki, a former deputy finance minister who has been critical of monetary policy. At a press conference last Thursday, Glapinski criticised MPC members who "take 37,300 zlotys ($7,437.69) a month for participating in one meeting during the month and criticise the actions of the whole body". The central bank kept its main interest rate at 6.75% at its Oct. 5 meeting following a run of 11 consecutive hikes.
It’s Monday, and you’re running late. You strap your Meta Quest Pro on your head, you squeeze in around the virtual wood conference table and you smirk at your boss, who isn’t pleased with your tardiness. He rolls his eyes, but you don’t take him seriously because, well, he looks like a levitating Woody from “Toy Story,” except with no cowboy hat…or legs. When the meeting is over, you’re back in your real home office, but three giant virtual computer monitors hover in front of you. On the wall hangs a virtual whiteboard with a motivational quote: TEAMWORK!

Sept 28 (Reuters) - Canada's first national climate adaptation strategy needs to be improved to include near-term targets and specific solutions ahead of its November release to mitigate worsening global warming impacts, experts advising the government told Reuters in the wake of devastation caused by storm Fiona. The destruction comes weeks before Ottawa releases its first ever National Adaptation Strategy (NAS) in early November. A 2020 report from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities estimated Canada needs to spend C$5.3 billion a year to adapt to climate change but the country is at least a decade behind Europe in developing a national strategy, experts said. Britain released its first national adaptation program in 2013, with five-year targets, and is currently developing a third version. "Our first adaptation strategy needs to be a home run," said Ryan Ness, adaptation research director for the Canadian Climate Institute (CCI).
Is it worth it to upgrade to an iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro?

Only if you want a bigger screen and if photos and always-on screen are your priorityIf you bought an iPhone 13 or iPhone 13 Pro in the past year, there are only a few reasons to upgrade. The updates to the iPhone 14 are minor enough that most people won’t experience a big difference. See our notes on the iPhone 13 seriesThe differences between the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineups are fairly minor, which means for the same reason we think you should stick to the iPhone 13 if you’re otherwise happy with it, we think you’re best off holding on to your iPhone 12 rather than upgrading. iPhone SE (3rd generation, 2022) or iPhone SE (2nd generation, 2020)Upgrade? WARSAW, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Poland could raise interest rates by 200 to 400 basis points more, central banker Joanna Tyrowicz was quoted as saying on Friday, striking a hawkish tone at a time when many economists say the tightening cycle is nearing its end. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterIn September Poland's central bank raised its main interest rate by 25 basis points to 6.75%. However, Tyrowicz said that Poland may need a more "radical" approach. Nevertheless, she said that the need for higher borrowing costs did not necessarily mean rates had to rise in October. CNN —In theory there’s only so much to be done with a celebrity biography, but when the subject is Sidney Poitier, that’s an unusually target-rich environment. “Sidney,” a documentary from director Reginald Hudlin produced by Oprah Winfrey, does the actor justice, providing context, depth and considerable warmth in chronicling his remarkable life and trailblazing career. “He was given big shoulders, but he had to carry a lot of weight,” says Denzel Washington. “Sidney” casts its own warming glow, in a way that sheds light not only Poitier’s path but also the decades in which he carved it out. “Sidney” premieres September 23 in select theaters and on Apple TV+.

In addition, MGM Resorts International projects that sports gambling will generate $13.5 billion by 2025, with 38 US states participating by that time.
Five million people in the UK are going without food to pay household bills, a report says. The Money Advice Trust's report was based on an Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, estimated that one in nine UK adults had skipped meals in the last three months "just to keep the lights on." Energy bills in the UK have been rising rapidly since the beginning of the year. According to the report, 20% of adults in the UK said their energy bills had risen by $113 (£100) or more a month since April. Other European residents, such as those in Spain, have said they are cutting back on food and limiting heating in order to pay inflated energy bills.

“What a joyous occasion!” Bill Cunningham said last year of the Fifth Avenue Easter parade, calling it “a carnival celebration of spring.” He explained to us that the parade, which gained popularity in the 1880s, started as an after-church fashion procession by the residents of Fifth Avenue. It evolved into an occasion for people to dress up in even more whimsical costumes with “centuries of style represented,” he said. He started photographing the parade in the 1950s and continued until 2016, two months before he died. His pictures capture the humor, oddities and imaginativeness of the event, where fanciful hats, brightly colored clothes and enthusiasts of all things vintage are found on every block. Here are some of his photos, unpublished until now, from the past six years.
