[1/4] A street sign for Wall Street hangs in front of the New York Stock Exchange May 8, 2013. While the benchmark yield eased back from that level, it posted its largest weekly surge since April 2022, powered by solid economic data. 10 year Treasury yield and the Fed funds target rateStrong U.S. retail sales in September reinforced ideas that the Fed may need to keep interest rates high for longer, Hainlin said. The yield on U.S. 10-year Treasury notes, the bedrock of the global financial system, pulled back after breaching the 5% level late Thursday. Benchmark 10-year notes last rose 19/32 in price to yield 4.9094%, from 4.988% late on Thursday.

The sensation is a bit unnerving and invokes one of the laws of treehouse building: Heights you wouldn’t think twice about in a concrete structure suddenly become imposing when you’re on a branch. Taka, as everyone calls him — or sometimes Koba-san — is Japan’s best-known treehouse builder. He’s built treehouses for affluent Chinese clients and treehouses for preschools — draws for parents anxious about their children’s detachment from nature. The most modest of his structures, he says, is four square feet; the largest, about 270 square feet. He’s sometimes referred to as a “treehouse architect,” but he doesn’t care for the phrase — “architect” connotes not only degrees and building codes but other constraints, too, like permanence.

His comments come despite record contract offers from General Motors , Ford Motor and Stellantis that now include 23% hourly pay increases and other significantly enhanced benefits during the terms of the four and a half-year deal. "These are already record contracts, but they come at the end of decades of record decline. Despite Fain's comments, the union did not announce additional strikes Friday against any of the companies. He said it should be the UAW and Ford against foreign automakers," Fain said. About 34,000 U.S. automakers with the companies, or roughly 23% of UAW members covered by the expired contracts with the Detroit automakers, were on strike.

CNN —The Biden administration on Friday laid out the details of a $105 billion national security package that includes military and humanitarian assistance for the conflicts in Ukraine and Israel. House Republicans are still struggling to unite behind a speaker to lead their conference, and until one is elected, the national security package will remain in limbo. The Biden administration’s prior request for $24 billion in Ukraine aid was not included in a stopgap government funding measure Congress approved in late September. Here’s what’s in the package, according to the White House:$61.4 billion in aid for Ukraine$30 billion for the Defense Department for equipment for Ukraine and the replenishment of US stocks. $10 billion for humanitarian assistance$9.15 billion for aid for Ukraine, Israel, Gaza and other humanitarian needs.

Vehicles drive on the flooded Freeway 5 after an El Niño-strengthened storm brought rain to Los Angeles on Jan. 6, 2016. Lucy Nicholson | ReutersThe El Niño weather pattern is still active heading into the winter this year and it will mean the northern and far west portions of the U.S. will have a warmer-than-usual winter. El Niño, meaning "little boy" in Spanish, and La Niña, meaning "little girl" in Spanish, are opposite weather patterns driven by a change in the trade winds in the Pacific Ocean. This is the first time in four years that El Niño has been active as winter begins, according to the NOAA. While El Niño rains will alleviate ongoing droughts in some regions, it may also drive the development of drought conditions in the Pacific Northwest.

This was more than double the next-largest increase in net worth since 1989, when the Fed began the survey. Median net worth — which measures household assets like houses and vehicles, minus debts like mortgages and student loans — surged to $192,000 when accounting for inflation. While this group, comprised of younger millennials and Gen Zers, has a much smaller net worth than any other age group, median net worth grew from $16,100 to $39,000 during the three-year period. So-called DINKs, or couples with "double income, no kids," also saw huge net worth increases, according to the Fed's survey. Americans in the 55 to 64 age group saw median net worth gains of 48%, while those between the ages of 65 and 74 had a 33% rise in median net worth.

Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, on his first three-day official visit to Australia since becoming leader in December, said the relationship with Australia was warm. Under Rabuka's government, Fiji has put a decade-old policing agreement with China on hold, and sought to increase defence ties with Australia. Albanese said Australia had agreed to provide more budget support to Fiji "to help economic recovery and to boost growth", and would sell it 14 Bushmaster protected vehicles to support the Fiji military's peacekeeping operations around the world.

LONDON, Oct 18 (Reuters) - EE, Britain's biggest mobile operator, on Wednesday announced the launch of a sales platform called EE ID that will offer gaming consoles and other electronics to its customers and others. In Britain's mature mobile market, where EE, owned by UK telecoms giant BT (BT.L), competes with VM O2, Vodafone (VOD.L) and Three, mobile network providers are hunting for new ways to grow. EE, which is already Britain's largest retailer of smartphones and has 25 million customers many on monthly deals, said the new platform will sell gaming consoles, tablets, upgrade packages and subscriptions to existing EE customers plus the rest of the market. EE ID will also offer customers cyber security, home security and insurance products for electronics, said Christian Thrane, EE's managing director of marketing. You can now get free credit reports pretty much whenever you need one, not just once a year. Americans were already legally entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the three credit reporting agencies, the FTC says. However, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the three agencies announced in 2020 that free reports would be made available every week. To request your free weekly credit reports, go to AnnualCreditReport.com. A devastating blast at a hospital in Gaza believed to have killed hundreds of people prompted Jordan to cancel the second leg of Biden’s trip. And like any major presidential intervention in a troubled world, Biden’s visit carries the possibility of failure that could damage his political standing at home. Hamas accused Israeli forces of attacking the hospital and killing between 200 to 300 people. A global outpouring of support for Israel risks overshadowing the growing human toll of its attacks against Hamas targets in Gaza. Clashes have already broken out in Ramallah, the seat of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank after the Gaza hospital blast.

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump returns to a New York City courthouse Tuesday to be a spectator at the civil fraud trial threatening to disrupt his real estate empire. His appearance was initially supposed to coincide with testimony by Michael Cohen, his former attorney turned foe. But Cohen's planned appearance on the witness stand was delayed until at least next week, due to a health problem. Instead of Cohen, Trump's courtroom visit is likely to overlap with the resumption of testimony from his company's assistant controller, Donna Kidder. The trial concerns six remaining claims in the lawsuit, including allegations of conspiracy, insurance fraud and falsifying business records.

Then came the Hamas attack against Israel, which has made Netanyahu’s late October trip uncertain and put Beijing's Middle East approach to the test. China’s stated neutrality on the war has upset Israel, but Beijing may gain in the long run by forging closer ties with Arab countries, experts said. “For a while at least, Beijing’s Middle East policy is paralyzed by the war,” said Shi Yinhong, professor of international relations at Beijing-based Renmin University of China. “China’s engagement in the Middle East is set to increase during this conflict. We could talk, I suppose, about all Taylor Swift’s done for the economy, friendship bracelets, seismology and Travis Kelce. Nor is her show — produced as discrete segments devoted to nine of Swift’s 10 albums — the cultural gymnasium Madonna requires. Swift plays to her enhanced strengths: candied pitch, arresting stature, toothsome songwriting, winking, the very idea of play. Harrison Ford has been donning the fedora and cracking the whip of the daring tomb-raider Indiana Jones for more than 40 years. The series' latest installment, "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," leans on myths from ancient Greece about a device that can supposedly turn back the hands of time. Indiana Jones suddenly looked generations younger — perfect for the movie's opening sequence, set during World War II. Founded in 1975 by celebrated "Star Wars" creator Geroge Lucas, ILM — a division of Lucasfilm, which also produces "Indiana Jones" — is at the forefront of this new Hollywood frontier. Why It Finally Pays to Keep Your Savings in Cash Again

By Steve GarmhausenGood news for savers: interest rates on high-yield savings accounts and CDs are beating inflation. Savings accounts and CDs, even the best of them, paid interest rates below the rate of inflation. If inflation is, say, 5% and your savings account pays 1%, $1,000 in cash will be worth just $960 in a year. The average savings account interest rate is just .42% and the typical one-year CD pays 1.72%. “The difference between an online savings account and the average brick and mortar account is huge right now,” says Tumin.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump will back in court next week for his New York civil fraud trial, a person familiar with the former president’s plans told The Associated Press on Thursday, setting up a potential face-to-face showdown with fixer-turned-foe Michael Cohen, who is expected to testify. Trump is expected to attend the non-jury trial Tuesday through Thursday next week, according to the person who confirmed the plans, which were first reported by news website The Messenger. Outside, Trump decried the civil trial a “sham,” a “scam,” and “a continuation of the single greatest witch hunt of all time.” His campaign, meanwhile, attempted to capitalize with fundraising appeals tied to the proceedings. Trump isn’t required to be in court for the civil trial until he is called to testify in the few weeks. The civil trial, which doesn't have a jury because one is not required under the law, concerns allegations of conspiracy, insurance fraud and falsifying business records.

Geoffrey Hinton, the computer scientist known as a "Godfather of AI," says artificial intelligence-enhanced machines "might take over" if humans aren't careful. "One of the ways these systems might escape control is by writing their own computer code to modify themselves," said Hinton. Humans, including scientists like himself who helped build today's AI systems, still don't fully understand how the technology works and evolves, Hinton said. As Hinton described it, scientists design algorithms for AI systems to pull information from data sets, like the internet. Pichai and other AI experts don't seem nearly as concerned as Hinton about humans losing control.
