CNN —The U.S. government’s road safety agency wants the auto industry to design new vehicles including increasingly large SUVs and pickup trucks so they reduce pedestrian deaths and injuries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday that it’s proposing a new rule setting testing and performance requirements to minimize the risk of pedestrian head injuries. The rule is aimed largely at SUVs and pickup trucks, which have grown in size and hood height over the years, causing blind spots for drivers. NHTSA said pedestrian deaths increased 57% from 2013 to 2022, from 4,779 to 7,522. Data show that pedestrian deaths when hit by the front of a vehicle are most common for SUVs and trucks.

The U.S. Federal Reserve can afford to make a jumbo 50 basis point rate cut next week without spooking markets, an analyst has suggested, as opinion on the central bank's forthcoming meeting remains hotly divided. "I would not be surprised if they jumped all the way to 50 basis points," Yoshikami told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe." "That would be considered, on one hand, a very positive sign the Fed is doing what is needed to support jobs growth," he said. "I think the Fed at this point is ready to get out ahead of this." His comment follow similar remarks Friday from Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, who said the Fed should deliver a half-point interest rate cut at its next meeting, contending that it went "too far, too fast" with its previous policy tightening.

But another rival, Cleveland Cliffs, is offering to buy those mills from US Steel if President Joe Biden stops the deal. But those objections could be lessened if the alternative to Cleveland Cliffs buying the mills was their closure. Cleveland Cliffs said it has the financing in place to buy the threatened intergrated steel mills, which make steel from raw materials.
