Charles Liang, chief executive officer of Super Micro Computer Inc., during the Computex conference in Taipei, Taiwan, on Wednesday, June 5, 2024. Super Micro Computer could be headed down a path to getting kicked off the Nasdaq as soon as Monday. Super Micro's stock is now equal to where it was trading in May 2022, after falling another 11% on Thursday. Super Micro could also get an extension from the Nasdaq, giving it months to come into compliance. "Given that Super Micro's accounting concerns have become more acute since Super Micro's quarter ended, its weakness could ultimately benefit Dell more in the coming quarter," Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi wrote in a note this week.

Last week, Israeli soccer fans were attacked in the streets, Palestinian flags ripped off walls and antisemitic slurs yelled during riots. But the timeline of how tensions ignited in Amsterdam is different depending on which community you ask. “It’s really so, so manipulative… It only makes everything worse,” Jaïr Stranders, a local theater director and a board member of the Liberal Jewish Community of Amsterdam told CNN. But in Amsterdam, many local Jewish officials as well as the mayor have urged against using that description. “They are Dutch youth,” he noted, adding that Amsterdam is a city of many nationalities and many values that can peacefully coexist.

Whatever time I'm getting back from leveraging AI, I'm using it for some other work. Once the developers start writing code for these projects and do the actual work, that's where we leverage AI. President Joe Biden made student debt relief a focus of his administration. The mass forgiveness he promised on the campaign trail was struck down by the Supreme Court, and some of his other debt relief initiatives, like the Saving on a Valuable Education plan and his negotiated rulemaking plan, are currently tied up in court. But his administration has still managed to clear $166.5 billion in student loans, according to Department of Education data. Borrowers had an average of $38,207 of debt forgiven. "From day one of my administration, I promised to fight to ensure higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity," Biden said in an October statement.

In the wake of last month's E. coli outbreak tied to McDonald's slivered onions, the fast food giant said it will invest over $100 million to boost restaurant sales and speed up the recovery at impacted franchisees. Of that total, $65 million will be invested into supporting owners who have lost business, targeting those in the hardest-hit states. Approximately $35 million will be invested traffic-driving programs, including marketing efforts, according to a memo to owners and employees viewed by CNBC. The Thursday night disclosure to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission showed that financial firm ARC Global Investments II and its manager, Patrick Orlando, no longer own more than 5% of Trump Media stock. Trump Media reported in early September that ARC owned over 11 million shares, equating to 5.4% of the company's outstanding stock. In mid-September, a Delaware judge found that Trump Media breached an agreement with ARC and must grant it additional shares. Trump Media, which operates the Truth Social app, suffered a major selloff in late summer and by the end of September was trading near its post-merger lows. But it saw a major stock rally in October that recovered most of those losses.

If this year's closures are any indication — and if the economy worsens — they won't be alone. 2025 is still more than a month away, but it's already shaping up to be another rocky year for retail. Analysts at UBS project the total number of US retail closures could reach 45,000 over the next five years. For one thing, even healthy retailers like Walmart and Target periodically review and trim their store fleets in the normal course of business. In any event, the year hasn't even begun, but nearly 1,500 retail closures are slated — already roughly half the amount BI has tracked for full-year totals in recent years.

CNN —Israel’s war conduct in Gaza “is consistent with the characteristics of genocide,” including mass civilian casualties and using starvation as a weapon, according to a new United Nations Special Committee report released Thursday. The UN committee added that Israeli officials have publicly supported policies to destroy “vital water, sanitation and food systems” in Gaza as well as prevent access to fuel. The UN Special Committee is composed of three UN member states, including Malaysia, Senegal and Sri Lanka. But the US view is a stark contrast with the bleak picture on the ground, where much of the aid that reaches Gaza is not being distributed. “We have not seen any aid, and no one has sent us food,” 63-year-old Palestinian Umm Muhammad Al-At’out told CNN this week.

Trump has threatened to hit China with at least 60% tariffs and vowed to end reliance on the country. It would force companies to scramble to find other sources of supply, American consumers to pay higher prices at the store, and, according to many experts, lead to job losses. "If they are interpreted in that way, China might have a much more vigorous response, not limited to tariffs." Those actions could range from economic changes to matters of diplomacy and security, Kennedy said, adding China may "push back as hard as they can." More combative relations between the U.S. and China also brings the risk of public backlash amid rising Chinese nationalism.

Inside the Quest to Make Fusion Energy a Reality
  + stars: | 2024-11-15 | by ( Raymond Zhong | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +15 min
The Quest to Build a Star on Earth Start-ups say we’re closer than ever to near-limitless, zero-carbon energy from fusion. Today’s fusion start-ups aren’t just preparing for this moment in the lab. Such advances helped the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory produce more fusion energy than the energy in the incoming laser beams, for the briefest of moments, in 2022. They also helped European researchers generate record amounts of fusion energy at a facility in Britain last year. What worries researchers is how much some fusion start-ups are promising, and how soon.
