Its fund manager, Sean Peche, has a track record in picking winners that have helped the fund beat the S & P 500 over the past two years without owning any of the so-called " Magnificent Seven " technology stocks. The fund manager identified the U.S.-listed Perion Network as its worst-performing stock investment of the year. As an Israeli company not included in major stock indices, the Ranmore fund manager believed it might be undervalued due to reduced investor attention. The Ranmore fund manager noted that the company's cash reserves, which stood at $188 million at the end of 2023, provided some protection against further losses. Despite the setback with Perion Network, Peche remains optimistic about other investments.

MIT economist warns AI infrastructure investments may not meet investor profit expectations. Only 5% of jobs are likely to be significantly impacted by AI in the next decade, according to the economist. That's according to MIT Economist Daron Acemoglu, who told Bloomberg in an interview that the hype surrounding AI may not meet its lofty expectations. The most optimistic scenario, according to Acemoglue, is that AI hype cools and some applications of the technology take hold. In such a scenario, investors and tech executives would become disenchanted with AI, leading to a "AI spring followed by AI winter."

Andy Jassy is thinking long-termThe recent return-to-office mandate requiring employees to work from the office five days a week is tricky. I think Jassy is thinking long-term, which is one of the core features of Amazon's leadership principles: long-term thinking. The third leadership principle I think Jassy is enforcing is frugality. The principle says that leaders work daily to create a safer, more productive, higher-performing, and diverse work environment. I think Jassy looks at this and says, "That is what I am doing."

That said, everyone seemed to agree that the days of logo-forward purchases and other conspicuous signs of wealth are over — even on Wall Street. The industry's movers and shakers are still into name brands but are leaning into those that exude "quiet luxury." And where there are celebrities and influencers, there tend to be Wall Street dealmakers. It's not surprising that high-earners on Wall Street would have second homes (or, in many cases, multiple). People want to work for a good boss just as much as they want to earn a good salary. That's why it's crucial to look for signs of a supportive manager, or a "green flag boss" as Weishaupt puts it, when you're interviewing for a new job. The one big thing I say to my team is, 'There's no mistake you can make that I can't fix.' S. Iswaran, who was a cabinet member for 13 years and has held the trade, communications and transport portfolios, had pleaded guilty to four counts of improperly receiving gifts and one of obstructing justice. The court said Iswaran, 62, would be allowed to remain on bail for the next few days and begin his jail term on Monday. The case has shocked Singapore, which prides itself on having a well-paid and efficient bureaucracy as well as strong and squeaky clean governance. Iswaran resigned as transport minister after less than three years in the job when he was first charged in January. The prosecution had initially charged him with 35 offenses but proceeded with only five.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (AP) — The Dominican Republic announced Wednesday that it would start massive deportations of Haitians living illegally in the country, expelling up to 10,000 of them a week. Government spokesman Homero Figueroa told reporters that the government took the decision after noticing an “excess” of Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. Last year, the Dominican Republic deported more than 174,000 people it says are Haitians, and in the first half of the year, it has expelled at least 67,000 more. Activists have long criticized the administration of President Luis Abinader for what they say are ongoing human rights violations of Haitians and those of Haitian descent born in the Dominican Republic. Here’s the deal: The East Coast port strike is getting a lot of attention for its potential disruption to the economy — which is precisely the point. No dockworkers means no bananas (or whatever), which means no profits for the companies that produce and ship them. While research shows automation has obvious benefits, like lower operating costs and fewer human-related errors, port automation does not, on its own, significantly improve performance, according to a 2018 McKinsey report. But automation anxiety is rapidly spilling over into office work, where managers are adopting AI in the hopes of replacing human work or amplifying production. As Washington Post columnist Heather Long wrote Tuesday, the strike is “an early battle of well-paid workers against advanced automation.

Ray Dalio is again promoting the idea that China urgently needs to start a "beautiful deleveraging." In a LinkedIn post on Tuesday, Dalio wrote of what he called a "beautiful deleveraging," or an aggressive, two-pronged approach to solving debt issues. Dalio wrote that Chinese leader Xi Jinping's unprecedented stimulus sparked a "big week" for economic optimism, but it won't be enough. The interest rate cuts would ideally be so drastic that they run below inflation and nominal growth rates, Dalio wrote. If Beijing doesn't start a "beautiful deleveraging," he said, it risks allowing its crisis to drag on and create an "economic and psychological malaise like Japan experienced."

The suspect hasn’t been charged in the McCann case, in which he is under investigation on suspicion of murder. He is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for a rape he committed in Portugal in 2005. There are no formal pleas in the German legal system and there is no obligation for defendants to respond.
