The "coffee-cup test" has resurfaced online as a symbol, for some, of opaqueness in hiring. The secret nature of the test can raise similar concerns to the use of AI in hiring. AI can seem just as arbitrary in its decision making as the coffee-cup test. AI, of course, could make a hiring process that's still way too subjective that much less so. The online poll, conducted in June by Resume Builder, involved about 1,000 people who are part of the hiring process at their employers.

“They don’t even taste the ice cream,” Jessica Yang said of the social-media-conscious crowd that descended this summer on Folderol, a natural wine bar and artisanal ice cream parlor in Paris that she owns and operates with her husband, Robert Compagnon. As the spring bloomed into a summer that saw a record number of tourists traveling to Europe, the lines became longer. Throughout June and July, tourists and content creators flocked to Folderol, waiting for hours on its otherwise quiet 11th arrondissement street so that they, too, could recreate what they had seen online: fashionable folk sitting on Parisian curbs, eating ice cream from steel coupes, smoking cigarettes and swigging wine. Both 37-year-old chefs, Ms. Yang and Mr. Compagnon met in Paris in 2010 while working in the kitchen of the highly acclaimed restaurant Guy Savoy. Mr. Compagnon, who is French American, and Ms. Yang, who is Taiwanese American, spent the next few years between Paris and New York City, working at restaurants including Le Jules Verne, Momofuku Ko, Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare and Per Se.

WHEN I STARTED working in the kitchen, I didn’t have any formal culinary training. I had spent a lot of time as a kid parked in front of the TV watching PBS cooking shows and the Food Network, and working my way through my parents’ cookbooks. In high school and college, I loved cooking for my friends. But when I moved to New York to make food my career, I wasn’t quite sure how to do it.

CNN —Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday defended her approach to the first impeachment of then-President Donald Trump in 2019, in her first public comments on the Republican effort to launch an inquiry into President Joe Biden. As CNN previously reported, the speaker’s announcement “directing” a House committee to open a formal inquiry into Biden meant there would be no floor vote to formally authorize the effort, according to a GOP source. Skipping an impeachment inquiry vote would mark a departure from McCarthy’s previous comments on the matter, but the speaker earlier Wednesday placed the blame squarely on his predecessor. A Bathtub in the Kitchen? Not a Problem for New Yorkers.

Many New York City renters will recognize this scenario: You’re on your fourth apartment tour of the day when a broker unlocks the front door and ushers you into the kitchen. Often used as an example of what New Yorkers must endure, navigating an eccentric kitchen has become an experience that unites lifelong residents and uninitiated transplants. After the passage of the New York Tenement House Act of 1901, all residences were required to install a sink and bathtub to meet the city’s sanitation standards. In tenements across the Lower East Side and East Village, bathtubs fit only in the kitchen, often the apartment’s largest room. Despite these quirks, New Yorkers have found ways to make do — and even fall in love with — their wacky kitchens.

One executive uses a hiring strategy called the "coffee cup test" on candidates in job interviews. He said in a resurfaced 2019 clip that he doesn't hire people who don't offer to wash their cup after the interview. Social media users are calling him out for playing a "deeply disturbing psycho-social game." Most candidates did offer to take back their cup with only a few that didn't, Innes noted at the time. The podcast episode has now resurfaced on social media, being shared on both TikTok and Reddit, with some users saying that Innes' strategy is manipulative.

As one-third of the Bronx culinary collective Ghetto Gastro, Pierre Serrao naturally spends his Sundays in the kitchen. “They stayed open when everybody else was closed,” Mr. Serrao said. Ghetto Gastro raised money and secured supplies, like sneakers, for the workers. “Their sneakers were all the way worn out from running up like 30 flights of stairs every day to bring people food,” he said. Recently, Mr. Serrao has been focused on promoting Ghetto Gastro’s first cookbook, “Ghetto Gastro Presents Black Power Kitchen,” which was released last fall, and the collective’s newest line of affordable cookware for Target.

Food memories can sometimes run backward, to a moment when we first experienced entirely new sensations. In the summer of 2010, I worked at Pies ‘n’ Thighs, a Brooklyn restaurant focused on classic Southern comfort foods. One of my responsibilities was transforming that morning’s produce order into the basis for the day’s dishes. Over time, the fruits and vegetables that came my way helped me chart the changing season and experience the world outside our basement kitchen. And it was there that I first encountered Concord grapes, the deep purple fruit arriving in flats the very moment the season seemed to be peaking, the kitchen ovens making the mid-August humidity almost overwhelming.

LONDON (AP) — British police scoured a huge London park on Friday for an ex-soldier who escaped from prison while awaiting trial on terrorism charges. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the search of Richmond Park in the city’s southwest, which involved two helicopters and officers on the ground, was connected to the hunt for Daniel Abed Khalife. The 21-year-old slipped out of Wandsworth Prison on Wednesday morning while working in the kitchen, apparently by clinging to the underside of a food-delivery truck, police said. His escape has prompted extra security checks at airports and the Port of Dover, the main boat crossing from England to France. But activity focused on Richmond Park, 2,500 acres (1,000 hectares) of woods and grassland about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from Wandsworth Prison.
