But as an American business leader condemning Hamas’s attacks, he said, he felt surprisingly lonely. “I was disappointed that fewer leaders than I anticipated spoke out emphatically, clearly and with moral clarity on this issue,” Mr. Karp said. Some business leaders made donations to humanitarian organizations and pointed their employees to company-sponsored mental health resources. “No company does business in Gaza — as opposed to, say, in Russia, where there are 1,500 major companies doing business,” he said, comparing this war with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “The dynamics in the Middle East have always been difficult and complex,” he wrote.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu holds a press conference with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz (not pictured) in the Kirya military base in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Oct. 28, 2023. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that there will be no cease-fire in Gaza unless Hamas agrees to release Israeli hostages. He also said, in an exclusive interview with David Muir, the anchor for ABC News "World News Tonight," that Israel will have to oversee "security responsibility" in Gaza "for an indefinite period" in order to ensure that Hamas cannot carry out large-scale terrorism acts again. Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed more than 10,000 Palestinians since Oct. 7, according to the Hamas-run Palestinian Health Ministry. The total number of deaths recorded over the 31 days of fighting is 10,022, including 4,102 children, the ministry said.

ABIR SULTAN POOL/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that Israel would consider "tactical little pauses" in Gaza fighting to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid or allow the exit of hostages held by Hamas militants. Netanyahu made the comments in a U.S. television interview during which he was asked who should govern Gaza after fighting is over. Israel says Hamas should release the hostages first; Hamas says it will not free them or stop fighting while Gaza is under assault. Asked if he was open to a humanitarian pause in Gaza, Netanyahu said: "Well, there'll be no ceasefire, no general ceasefire in Gaza without the release of our hostages."

SANTIAGO, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Chile's Palestinian community, the largest outside the Middle East, is a strong force in the Andean nation, involved in local politics, culture and soccer. Now it's making Chile one of the loudest regional voices criticizing Israel over its military action in Gaza. In a recent mass, Abed invited members from Chile's Muslim community and the Palestinian ambassador; keffiyehs, hijabs and Palestinian flags were sprinkled throughout the pews. The prominence of the Palestinian community has sparked strong support from other groups in Chile. "The Palestinian community (here) activates whenever there's aggressions."

Comments by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel appeared to confirm that Israel is preparing to play at least some role in controlling Gaza for a time after fighting ends. Israel will need to oversee the security of the Gaza Strip “for an indefinite period” once the war with Hamas is over, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an interview with ABC News that aired on Monday. Asked who should govern Gaza when the war ends, Mr. Netanyahu responded that he thought Israel would “have the overall security responsibility” over the territory indefinitely. Mr. Netanyahu did not elaborate in the ABC interview on what “overall security responsibility” over Gaza would entail but said, “Those who don’t want to continue the way of Hamas” should be in charge. Israeli officials have publicly said it is premature to discuss governance for Gaza and that they are focused on immediate military objectives.

The bands symbolize solidarity with the roughly 240 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. It’s a feeling that cuts across the deep divisions within Israeli society: the world does not understand us. In the early days after the Hamas terror attack, many of the hostages’ families were reluctant to criticize the government of Netanyahu. Public displays of solidarity with Gaza or criticism of Israel’s military response are few and far between. “This conflict (between Israel and the Palestinians) isn’t black and white, but this war (with Hamas) is,” he added.

TEL AVIV—Israel began in earnest its dangerous push into Gaza City, piercing the densely populated urban Hamas stronghold with troops and armored vehicles after one of the most intense bombing campaigns of the monthlong war. A spokesman for the Israeli military said Monday that its units had effectively encircled Gaza City after reaching the enclave’s Mediterranean coast on Sunday. Israel’s military has previously said Gaza City, located in the enclave’s north, is where much of Hamas’s military defenses, its command bunkers and fighters are concentrated.

Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said that Israeli forces “are continuing to deepen the pressure into the depths of Gaza City.” He didn’t say during a briefing Monday where Israeli soldiers are operating, and Israeli officials have been careful not to disclose the location of their ground forces in Gaza.

REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 6 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden's administration has informed the U.S. Congress that it is planning a $320 million transfer of precision bombs for Israel, a source familiar with the plan said on Monday. Clearing out the Hamas tunnels is one assignment for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) amid its ongoing ground invasion of Gaza, now a little more than a week old. To effectively carry out this task, the military has a elite band of commandos who are trained for underground warfare and other subterranean operations known as the Yahalom unit. The unit was created in 1995 and doubled in size after the 2014 Gaza War — known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge — to deal with the growing threat posed by Hamas' tunnels. On Friday, for example, the IDF said Yahalom soldiers working in tandem with other units destroyed Hamas tunnels during "special operations" inside the strip. "Hamas views warfare underground just as it would aboveground, utilizing defense, offense, and retreat," he remarked.

White House spokesperson John Kirby said the U.S. and Israeli governments would continue to be in touch on such potential temporary pauses and that Biden and Netanyahu agreed to continue talks in the coming days. "You can expect that we're going to continue to advocate for temporary and localized pauses in the fighting," Kirby told reporters. Biden and Netanyahu also discussed the situation in the West Bank. The White House said that fewer than 30 aid trucks entered Gaza in the last 24 hours.

The women agreed to meet at a school Ms. Oliver founded three years ago. When the pandemic hit, Ms. Oliver grew frustrated watching wealthy, largely white, parents pay teachers for private learning “pods,” exacerbating inequities. “I have a very strong affiliation with marginalized people — brown, displaced, refugees, Black,” Ms. Oliver recalled saying at the beginning of the conversation. The way Ms. Oliver described the Hamas attack read to Ms. Minkin like a justification for the murder of Jews. Israel, Ms. Minkin later thought, is a central part of her identity, a place that shaped her, a Jewish homeland she returns to frequently.
