Dry Weather Hampers Mass Christmas Island Crab Migration
  + stars: | 2024-02-19 | by ( Feb. | At A.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +1 min
By Cordelia HsuSYDNEY (Reuters) - Unusually dry weather has delayed the annual migration of millions of Christmas Island red crabs from the island's interior to the sea where they mate. There are over 100 million red crabs on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean, much of which is designated as a national park. Authorities say "exceptionally dry" conditions have put a dampener on this season's migration, where the mass of red crabs usually blocks off traffic in a normal year. This year is the first time the crabs have migrated as late as February since Parks Australia started tracking migration in the 1980s, he added. The migration sees the crabs journey from the interior of the island to the ocean, where they mate.

Read previewA federal grand jury indicted a California man accused of stealing a Yosemite National Park ranger's vehicle and leading a "high-speed chase" before driving off a cliff. AdvertisementThis isn't the first time tourists have been accused of misbehaving in US national parks. In May 2023, a bison calf had to be euthanized after a man lifted it out of a river in Yellowstone National Park, prompting its herd to reject it. An unidentified man disturbed a bison calf in Lamar Valley near the confluence of the Lamar River and Soda Butte Creek in Yellowstone National Park. "Park rangers tried repeatedly to reunite the calf with the herd, but their efforts were unsuccessful."

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian authorities on Saturday said asbestos had been discovered in more places in Sydney including housing estates as the New South Wales government continues a weeks-long scramble to remove the toxic material from mulch used in public spaces. Since then, in what is the biggest investigation by the state's Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in decades, 32 city sites have returned positive results for bonded asbestos, the agency said in a statement on Saturday. The EPA said new sites where asbestos had been detected were a public school and park in the city's north, and two residential estates under construction in Sydney's south-west. The University of Sydney had also been identified as potentially tainted and would be tested this weekend, it said. The rate of positive results is around 10 percent," the EPA said.

LOISABA CONSERVANCY, Kenya (AP) — Conservationists in Kenya are celebrating as rhinos were returned to a grassy plateau that hasn't seen them in decades. The rhinos were taken from three parks that are becoming overcrowded to the private Loisaba Conservancy, where herds were wiped out by poaching decades ago. Kenya now has around 1,000 black rhinos, the third biggest population behind South Africa and Namibia. There are just over 6,400 wild black rhinos left in the world, all of them in Africa, according to the Save the Rhino organization. Tom Silvester, the CEO of Loisaba Conservancy, said Kenya's plan is to get its black rhino numbers to 2,000 over the next decade.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian authorities on Friday cordoned off areas in several parks in Sydney after the discovery of asbestos in mulch, while schools began precautionary testing as the government scrambled to remove the toxic material from public spaces. About 700 students at a public school in Sydney's southwest will be relocated to another school for several weeks after finding asbestos on campus. The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Fair Day event, which usually draws tens of thousands of revellers, scheduled for Sunday was cancelled after traces of asbestos were found around the Victoria Park venue. The New South Wales state government on Thursday set up a taskforce to provide more resources and staff to help support the Environment Protection Authority's investigations. After Shutting Down, These Golf Courses Went Wild

There was scraggly grass in one sand trap and wooden blocks and a toy castle in another, evidence of children at play. People were walking their dogs on the fairway, which was looking rather ragged and unkempt. Nowadays, these grounds are mowed just twice a year, and haven’t been doused with pesticides or rodenticides since 2018, which was when this 157-acre stretch of land stopped being the San Geronimo Golf Course, and began a journey toward becoming wild, or at least wilder, once again. A small number of shuttered golf courses around the country have been bought by land trusts, municipalities and nonprofit groups and transformed into nature preserves, parks and wetlands. Among them are sites in Detroit, Pennsylvania, Colorado, the Finger Lakes of upstate New York, and at least four in California.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Senate voted Wednesday to put a politically appointed board in control of the Alabama Department of Archives and History, a change proposed after some lawmakers were upset about the department hosting a lecture on LGBTQ+ history. State senators also approved legislation that would allow local government officials to dismiss library board members they appointed if they become displeased with their performance. He said the change would ensure board members are responsive to elected officials. Board members are selected by a vote of the trustees and confirmed by the Alabama Senate. Elliott said existing state law gives city councils the ability to appoint library board members but currently gives no mechanism for removal.

Growing up in New York as the eighth of nine kids, my immigrant parents had big homeowner dreams for me. Over the course of a decade, we bought and sold three properties: our first home, a four-bedroom house, and a two-bedroom condo. Here's why I'm so much happier now and don't regret leaving homeownership behind. At my rental, I can easily stroll to restaurants and parks, and I'm a five-minute drive to theaters, museums and galleries. I'm glad we didn't settle for something we didn't like as much, just to say we're homeowners.

Workers who bring Disneyland’s beloved characters to life — including Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Cinderella — are looking to unionize. Labor organizers announced the campaign Tuesday, saying performers want better safety conditions and scheduling policies to help keep the magic alive for visitors. While most of the more than 35,000 workers at the Disneyland Resort already have labor unions, about 1,700 performers and character actors do not. “This isn't one of those situations where we're out making the employer the bad guy,” said Kate Shindle, president of Actors' Equity Association, which would represent the performers. Disneyland officials said in a statement that they believe cast members deserve the right to a confidential vote.

A Slushy, Snowy, Icy Mix

A nor’easter disrupted daily life across the Northeast on Tuesday, upending school and work commutes, as rain turned to a slushy mix and then to snow in many regions. Some parts of New England were braced for more snow than they were likely to get as the storm rerouted itself. New York City was expecting up to 8 inches. In all, the weather was good news for small children and dogs, who quickly found their ways to parks and sledding hills — but was less pleasant for delivery workers on bikes and scooters.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 rose nearly 0.1% to 36,897.42, slipping back from earlier gains that took it briefly to a 34-year high. In prior months, such a report may have hurt the stock market because of concerns that it would mean a longer wait for cuts to interest rates from the Federal Reserve. The latest set of earnings reports from big U.S. companies also kept the stock market mixed overall. It gave a forecast for expected profit across 2024 that fell short of analysts’.
