CNN —Melanie Safka, the singer who went by the mononym Melanie famous for songs including “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” and “Brand New Key,” has died. The news was shared with CNN by Billy James of Glass Onyon PR, who said Melanie died on Tuesday. Originally from New York City and the daughter of a jazz singer, Melanie released two singles and an album in the late 1960s, but it was her appearance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 that cemented her breakthrough. She wrote a song about that experience, 1970’s “Candles in The Rain,” which became Melanie’s first US hit. She published her memoir ”Lake Days” last year, and her final tour, in late 2022, took her to the Netherlands.

CNN —Igor Girkin, a prominent Russian pro-war blogger who criticized President Vladimir Putin’s handling of the war on Ukraine, has been found guilty on extremism charges and sentenced to four years in prison by a Moscow court. Moscow City Court convicted Girkin, also known under his pseudonym, Strelkov, of inciting extremism – a charge he denied. Girkin was an influential blogger and critic of Putin. The court in 2022 found Girkin guilty of mass murder for his role in the incident and he was sentenced in absentia to life in prison. Europe's tech startups were twice as likely to accept a reduced valuation in order to raise funds than their US counterparts in 2023, new data shows. Zurich-based Ledgy surveyed 2,500 tech firms across 10 countries for its study and found that by comparison, only 9% of US startups reported a down-round last year. Similarly, smaller firms with fewer than 250 employees were 26% more likely than larger firms to have experienced a valuation cut in the past year, Spirig added. Of the companies surveyed, one in five said they had delayed moves to go public amid tepid macroeconomic conditions, per Ledgy's report. Around a third of respondents indicated that a listing in the US would be their ultimate preference over other destinations, although 72% of UK-based companies surveyed wanted to list in London.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain said in a joint statement on Tuesday that 24 countries, including the United States, Germany and Australia, conducted additional strikes on Monday against eight targets in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. "In response to continued illegal and reckless Houthi attacks against vessels transiting the Red Sea and surrounding waterways, the armed forces of the United States and United Kingdom, with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, the Netherlands, and New Zealand, conducted additional strikes against eight targets in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen," a joint statement issued by the British prime minister's office said. "These strikes were designed to disrupt and degrade the capability of the Houthis to continue their attacks on global trade and innocent mariners from around the world, while avoiding escalation." TORONTO (AP) — A Canadian judge has ruled that the government’s use of the Emergencies Act to quell weeks of protests by truckers and others angry over COVID-19 restrictions in 2022 was unreasonable and unconstitutional. In the decision released Tuesday, Federal Court Justice Richard Mosley said the invocation of the Emergencies Act led to the infringement of constitutional rights. Freeland said it was a hard decision to invoke the act but called the protests a serious threat to public safety, national security and Canada's economic security. The protests were first aimed at a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for cross-border truckers.
