Tech billionaire Elon Musk on Thursday called the Australian government “fascists” over plans to crack down on misinformation online. Social media companies could face fines up to 5% of their global revenue if they enable the spread of misinformation, under a law proposed Thursday by Australia’s Labor government. Musk, who considers himself a free speech advocate, made the one-word comment in a repost on his social media platform X of an article about the proposed legislation. “Elon Musk’s had more positions on free speech than the Kama Sutra,” Government Services Minister Bill Shorten told the Australian network Channel Nine on Friday. The case is one of several that are ongoing between X and the Australian regulator, eSafety.

President Vladimir Putin has warned Russia would be “at war” with the United States and its allies if they lift restrictions on Ukraine's use of long-range Western weapons. “We are not talking about allowing or not allowing the Ukrainian regime to strike Russia with these weapons,” Putin said Thursday in comments to propagandist Pavel Zarubin. Stefan Rousseau / WPA Pool via Getty Images"This will mean that NATO countries, the U.S. and European countries are at war with Russia," Putin said. Putin added that the Ukrainian army does not have the ability to program long-range missiles or the satellite data necessary for their targeting, relying on NATO military personnel for those tasks. It’s been pleading for that policy to change so it can strike military assets deeper inside Russia that are used to launch attacks on Ukrainian cities.

No one can keep former President Donald Trump away from Laura Loomer. A senior official from Trump’s 2020 campaign team said that helps explain why Loomer is no longer being kept at arm’s length. “Senator Graham is working tirelessly day and night to help re-elect President Trump,” Graham communications director Taylor Reidy responded in a statement to NBC News. Loomer is “not a member of our staff,” said a Trump campaign aide, who asked to remain anonymous. In fact, the Biden administration recently imposed its own set of tariffs, while extending ones first levied during the Trump administration. Take the tariffs the Trump Administration imposed on washing machines in 2018. The washing machine tariffs were part of a broad new tariff regime Trump imposed in an effort to protect American workers from anti-competitive Chinese trade practices. It resulted in what is generally viewed as a “trade war” involving retaliatory tariffs imposed on American goods. The White House gave a rationale similar to the Trump administration when it announced its tariffs.

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea on Thursday declared a special emergency medical response period for two weeks in September and said it would use all available resources to ensure services, as a strike by young doctors increases strains on the medical system. This includes raising by 3.5 times the examination fees specialist doctors receive at regional emergency medical centers, responsible for severe emergency patients, Han said. However ... we are by no means in a situation where we have to worry about medical collapse,” Han said. About 8,000 medical clinics and hospitals will be open nationwide daily during next week’s Chuseok, one of South Korea’s largest holidays, Han said. Yonhap reported on Thursday that the number of emergency room doctors has dropped 42% in 53 hospitals surveyed nationwide, with seven of the hospitals considering partial closure of emergency rooms, citing a medical professors’ association.

LONDON — Two alleged art thieves will appear in court in London next month accused of stealing “Girl With Balloon,” a famous painting by the mysterious British street artist Banksy. Larry Fraser, 47, from east London, and James Love, 53, from Essex, were both charged with non-residential burglary and placed in police custody on Thursday. The artwork — which shows a little girl letting go of, or perhaps reaching out for, a heart-shaped balloon — was stolen from a gallery in central London on Sept. 8 at 11:00 p.m, police said. The painting was the only item stolen and police said it had been recovered and would be returned to the gallery. The latest artworks from Banksy were a series of animal paintings dotted around London last month.

HONG KONG — China said Friday it would raise its retirement age for the first time in decades, as the world’s second-largest economy struggles with falling birth rates and an aging workforce. The country’s top legislative body approved a draft proposal to gradually implement the changes, state media reported Friday. China's retirement ages are among the lowest in the world and had remained unchanged since they were set in the 1950s. For those born in 1965, retirement would be delayed by one month, according to a chart published by Xinhua, China’s state-run news agency. The changes have been the subject of heated discussion among the Chinese public since they were proposed earlier this year.

An investigator has backed the World Anti-Doping Agency’s handling of a case involving 23 Chinese swimmers who failed drug tests weeks before the Tokyo Games and said WADA had not been complacent nor shown bias toward China. Swiss prosecutor Eric Cottier, who was handpicked by the global anti-doping agency, said in a preliminary report in July that WADA did not mishandle the case involving the swimmers, who tested positive for trimetazidine (TMZ) but were cleared by a Chinese investigation. Cottier reiterated those findings in his final report on Thursday but also criticized WADA for failing to challenge Chinese anti-doping authorities (CHINADA) for not following all of the procedures laid down in its anti-doping standard. The case prompted a backlash from athletes and national anti-doping authorities, who questioned WADA’s processes and complained about a lack of transparency in the case. “The ongoing failure to investigate and to answer the critical question of whether the 23 positive tests were due to contamination or intentional use will haunt athletes around the world for years to come.”

A person was shot and and suffered a life-threatening injury Thursday after tackling a pro-Israel demonstrator in Newton, Massachusetts, the district attorney said. A member of the demonstrating group, a 47-year-old man from Framingham, then shot that person, she said. Asked at a news conference if the person shot was anti-Israel or pro-Palestinian, Ryan said, "I think it’s too soon to get into that." The person who was shot, who has not been identified by authorities, sustained injuries that are life-threatening and was at a hospital Thursday night, Ryan said. At one point the person who was shot went into the street toward the demonstrators and then returned back to the other side, before crossing the street and tackling the demonstrator, she said.

North Korea is believed to have several sites for enriching uranium. The new type of centrifuge shows North Korea is advancing its fuel cycle capabilities, said Ankit Panda of the U.S.-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “Kim also appears to suggest that North Korean tactical nuclear weapons designs may primarily rely on uranium for their cores,” he said. This is notable because North Korea is more able to scale up its highly enriched uranium stockpiles, Panda said, compared with the more complicated process for plutonium. North Korea has previously shown photos of what it says were nuclear warheads.

A Delaware judge agreed to send another 2020 election defamation case to trial Thursday, ruling that the Newsmax Media published false claims saying Smartmatic voting machines rigged the 2020 election. Florida-based voting machine company Smartmatic, alleging defamation, sued Newsmax Media, also based in Florida, in 2021, arguing that the network claimed its devices rigged the 2020 election. Former President Donald Trump and his allies have repeatedly claimed that the 2020 election was rigged. But in wins for Smartmatic, he ruled firmly that the rigged election claims were definitely false, published by Newsmax and specific to Smartmatic. Smartmatic's case is quite different, in large part because the voting machine company was used only in Los Angeles during the 2020 election.

Former President Donald Trump said at a campaign rally Thursday that he would eliminate taxes on overtime pay if he wins a second term in November. "I’m also announcing that as part of our additional tax cuts, we will end all taxes on overtime," he said in Tucson, Arizona. The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for details about the plan. The Harris campaign also pointed to a 2019 Trump administration overtime pay rule that replaced a more expansive proposal pushed by the Obama administration. The 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act created a 40-hour workweek and overtime pay standards, as well as the right to a minimum wage.

The White House wrote that image-based sexual abuse “has skyrocketed,” disproportionately affecting women, children and LGBTQ people. More nonconsensual sexually explicit deepfake videos were uploaded online in 2023 than all previous years combined. Franks said that while the voluntary efforts the White House highlighted are welcome, she does not see them as a substitute for legislation. Still, he said, the Biden administration’s and Vice President Kamala Harris’ focus on gender violence, online harassment and image-based sexual abuse was “transformative” compared with the work of previous administrations and the impact it has on victims and their advocates. On Google’s search engine and Microsoft’s Bing, NBC News previously found that nonconsensual sexually explicit deepfakes were available at the top of some search results.

In the first college admissions process since the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action last year, Asian American enrollment at the most prestigious U.S. schools paints a mixed, uneven picture. Columbia University — which, unlike the other Ivies, groups Pacific Islanders with Asian Americans — saw an increase of nine percentage points in its enrollment of Asian American applicants, while Brown saw an increase of four percentage points. It doesn’t mean that race is entirely ruled out of the admissions process, however. Poon, who is the author of “Asian American is Not a Color: Conversations about Race, Affirmative Action, and Family,” said that with race masked in the admissions process, concerns around biases are actually more prevalent. And it’s going to be difficult to determine, for example, why there were drops in Asian American enrollment at some schools as well.

WASHINGTON — White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Thursday slammed Donald Trump’s association with right-wing conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer, who has become an increasing presence alongside the former president as he seeks a second term. “No leader should ever associate with someone who spreads this kind of ugliness, this kind of racist poison,” Jean-Pierre said at a press briefing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday it has yet to identify “a clear source” of infection in a Missouri patient who tested positive for the bird flu virus despite no known contact with poultry or dairy cows. Since March, there have been 13 bird flu infections in poultry and dairy workers amid an outbreak of H5N1 spreading rapidly in dairy cows across 200 dairy herds in 14 states, according to the CDC. The patient was hospitalized, officials believe, not because of the infection but because of the patient’s underlying medical conditions. They’re also asking about the type and source of meat and dairy the patient consumed, including any raw dairy. No bird flu infections in dairy cattle have been reported in Missouri, state health officials said in a release Friday.

Some sections are backward-looking and focus more on touting the record of the Biden-Harris administration, while also criticizing Trump’s agenda. The health care section of Harris’ agenda focuses more on what the Biden-Harris administration has done than plans for the future. The Harris agenda vows to “fight to raise the minimum wage,” but doesn’t say how high she wants it to be. The Harris campaign would not say whether she supports doing away with the 60-vote rule to pass those measures. The bulk of Harris’ agenda would be subject to congressional approval, likely requiring Democrats to control the House and Senate to have a strong chance of passage.
