In my 20 years of covering presidential campaigns as a journalist, there have been just two political conventions where the presidential nominees, their teams, the delegates and the party spent all four days radiating the confidence of a winner. The first was the Democrats’ in 2008 with Barack Obama — I’ll never forget how everyone I spoke with was certain of victory in November. The second one was the Republicans’ this week in Milwaukee, where Trump supporter after Trump supporter calmly, clearly insisted that Donald Trump would win this November. Don’t get me wrong: Many of the convention speakers spewed grievances to tear down Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and there was a certain fraudulence to the whole event — with Republicans lying about their war on abortion rights by censoring any talk of it, and misleading the audience about the economy, immigration, crime and more. But the tone and tenor of the convention were ecstatic about Trump, who was portrayed and praised as a man who survived an assassination attempt by the grace of God and emerged as a “lion” (a word used multiple times this week).

CNN —Joe Bonsall, who left the legendary singing group The Oak Ridge Boys after 50 years in January due to a neuromuscular disorder, has died, his management team announced Tuesday. I've lied about my age for so long that, on any given day, I forget exactly how old I am. I was in my 20s when I started lying about my ageWhen I started lying about my age, I was 24. I've heard people claim that lying about age is a huge red flag because it means you'll lie about other things too. "Age gracefully" is shorthand for "don't look older but also don't try not to." Far worse than my evasion or lie is how people, especially men, don't respect my privacy or boundaries even though I don't ask or care about their age.

CNN —A court in Moscow has ordered Yulia Navalnaya, the wife of late Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny, to be arrested in absentia, her spokesperson said Tuesday. The Basmannyy District Court in Moscow accused Navalnaya of “participation in an extremist organization,” her spokesperson Kira Yarmysh said in a post on social media. She has also been added to an international wanted list, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. He returned to Russia in 2021 from Germany, where he had been treated after being poisoned with Novichok, a Soviet-era nerve agent. Reacting to the court’s decision on Tuesday, Navalnaya reiterated claims of Putin’s involvement in the death of her husband.
