CNN —Frito-Lay has issued a voluntary recall of Tostitos Avocado Salsa Jar Dip because it may contain an undeclared milk allergen, according to the US Food and Drug Administration. People with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk could face “a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction” if they eat the dip, according to the FDA release. The front of the salsa dip jar is correctly labeled, but the side that lists its nutritional information does not include the allergen on the label. The recall affects the 15-ounce Tostitos Avocado Salsa Jar Dip that was sold nationwide in stores and online and that could have been purchased as early as April 5, 2023, according to the FDA. Last month, Frito-Lay issued a dairy-related voluntary recall of some of its Lay’s Classic Potato Chips packages, according to the FDA.

In recent years, edible sea moss has gotten a lot more attention on social media, including from celebrities like rapper Meek Mill. In 2022, Mark Cuban and Kevin Hart invested $600,000 into a start-up company that sells edible sea moss gel. The selling point for them was that the company's founder, Alexiou Gibson, says he lost 300 pounds by including the sea moss in his daily lattes. There are many people like Gibson who have shared their success stories after taking sea moss daily, but is there concrete evidence to support their claims? Here's what the science says about if sea moss is actually beneficial for weight loss, immunity and other health-related changes.

Can Supplements Help You Focus?

The same could be said for L-theanine, an amino acid found in green tea that is added to some supplements because of its association with better concentration and lower stress. No large, rigorous trials have shown that L-theanine improves cognition, said Dr. Pieter Cohen, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Some studies have found links between better cognitive performance and high consumption of dietary choline, an essential nutrient that occurs naturally in fish, eggs, poultry and dairy and is added to some cognitive enhancing supplements. But no thorough studies have proven that supplemental choline itself directly leads to cognitive benefits. In a study published in 2021, for example, Dr. Cohen and his colleagues tested 10 over-the-counter dietary supplements that were said to contain certain forms of the pharmaceutical drug piracetam.

So what does the rest of the year have in store for Wall Street? Unfortunately, Wall Street is unlikely to receive the clarity it seeks anytime soon. Still, economists at the Federal Reserve believe that a recession seems more likely by the end of 2023 than not. Richard Severo, a prizewinning reporter for The New York Times whose challenge to what he considered a punitive transfer by the newspaper’s management became a cause célèbre among journalists in the 1980s, died on June 12 at his home in Balmville, N.Y., in the Hudson Valley. But while reporting for The Times’s science section, Mr. Severo ran afoul of his bosses when he decided to write a book drawn from his articles about a patient with neurofibromatosis — known as the “Elephant Man” disease — whose face was reconfigured after grueling surgery. Accounts of what happened next vary, but The Times, through its publishing subsidiary Times Books, was said to have claimed first rights to the book because it was based on Mr. Severo’s work for the newspaper. Mr. Severo, however, through his agent, had already begun auctioning the rights to other publishers. Times Books eventually bid $37,500 (about $110,000 in today’s dollars), but Harper & Row, with an offer of $50,000 (about $145,000) won the rights.

Dreaming of a New Iran Diaries from three young womenThe uprising began in September, after a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, died in the custody of Iran’s morality police. To better understand how daily life in Iran has transformed, we asked three young women to keep a diary for five weeks. We are brothers and sisters.”Since November, hundreds of schools across Iran have reported mysterious incidents of poisoning with toxic gas. In the weeks since the three young women chronicled their experiences, the government has engaged in diplomatic outreach to project stability. For many in the country, including Ghazal, Kimia and Parnian, a desire for a better life in a new, free Iran remains.

NEW YORK, June 13 (Reuters) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is expected to release a final rule on biofuel blending volume mandates for the years 2023-2025 by June 21, after seeking a one-week extension on a deadline for the rule, according to a court document on Tuesday. The EPA was set to issue a final rule by Wednesday under a court-ordered deadline, but has agreed to an extension with industry trade group Growth Energy, the filing showed. The final rule is set to mark a new chapter of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program, which is more than a decade old. The EPA is expected to abandon that part of the proposal in the final rule, Reuters previously reported, citing sources. It is unclear whether those requirements will change in the final rule.

Aldi UK will be turning off lights across all of its store locations this month. The move follows a trial earlier this year, in which the discount retailer tried turning off some lights in four stores, according to The Telegraph. Initially founded in West Germany, Aldi has since expanded outside of its founding country to the tune of more than 12,000 stores across the US, UK, France, and Australia. Cutting down on energy costs is not exactly new in Europe, as energy prices have risen due to the war in Ukraine. Update: June 13, 2023 — This story was updated to clarify the lights aren't being turned off in Aldi's US stores.

Why, when we think of climate change, do we think of big oil, not big ag; Exxon and not Tyson? It’s time you met the big ag lobby, one of the most powerful influences on policy in America. But when we started digging into the big ag lobby, we discovered it’s basically — “The most powerful lobby on Capitol Hill. So the big ag lobby has one key aim — block environmental regulation. I absolutely envy how good these lobbyists are at their job.” It’s outrageous what the big ag lobby has gotten away with.

7-Eleven is giving the Slurpee a makeover
  + stars: | 2023-06-12 | by ( Jordan Valinsky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —The Slurpee, an iconic 7-Eleven frozen drink, is getting a makeover. Currently, stores sell at least three flavors (Coca-Cola, cherry and blue raspberry) and 7-Eleven often changes up its limited-time offerings. In 1965, 7-Eleven licensed the machine and changed its name from ICEE to Slurpee, because it described the sound drinkers made while sipping it through the straw. In the 1970s, 7-Eleven sold special cups with sports stars, video games and singers and some people even saved them to collect all of the designs. Every year, 7-Eleven celebrates the frozen concoction on July 11 (you know, 7/11) and hands out free small Slurpees to customers.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Center for Dairy Research is looking to hire a descriptive sensory panelist – in other words, a dairy taste tester – to join “a group of expert tasters” who can talk about their sensory experience, according to the job posting. The center wants someone to describe the taste of dairy foods “on the basis of appearance, texture, taste and aroma attributes” for product development and research purposes, the ad reads. Other responsibilities for the in-person, on-site job include participating in collaborative panel discussions and joining training sessions, according to the description. The Center for Dairy Research, located inside a licensed dairy plant at the university, was established “to support Wisconsin and the US dairy industry,” according to the university’s website.

WASHINGTON, June 9 (Reuters) - The United States and five of its allies on Friday condemned the use of trade practices that amount to economic coercion in a joint declaration that did not single out other countries but appeared to be aimed at China. Australia, Britain, Canada, Japan, and New Zealand jointly released the statement with the United States, emphasizing that "trade-related economic coercion and non-market-oriented policies and practices" threatened the multi-lateral trading system and "harms relations between countries." The United States, Britain, Japan and Canada are also members of the G7. In May, Beijing protested the G7's declarations, including on economic coercion, saying the U.S. was "pushing hard to weave an anti-China net in the Western world." "We are also seriously concerned about the use of forced labour, including state-sponsored forced labour, in global supply chains.

PARIS, June 2 (Reuters) - The United Nations food agency's world price index fell in May to its lowest in two years, as a slump in prices of vegetable oils, cereals and dairy outweighed increases for sugar and meat. The Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) price index, which tracks the most globally-traded food commodities, averaged 124.3 points in May against a revised 127.7 for the previous month, the agency said on Friday. But international rice prices continued to increase in May, partly due to tighter supplies in some exporting countries, said FAO. However, improving weather conditions in Brazil and lower crude oil prices have curbed sugar markets, it added. Wheat stocks were forecast to fall, however, as production was seen declining while demand was expected to be stable.

The war in Ukraine exacerbated supply chain logjams and manufacturing issues that began with the COVID-19 pandemic. Right now, the Food and Drug Administration is seeking public comments on proposed labeling guidelines for plant-based milk. While just 15% of all milk sold in the US in 2022 was plant-based, the category is growing faster than cow's milk: Plant-based milk sales grew 8% to $2.8 billion in 2022, according to the Plant Based Foods Association. Antia shared 3 major themes to invest in — and 14 key players driving this evolution. And according to Antia, right now there's no secular trend more exciting than the transformation of the world's food system. On the food supply side, Antia listed climate change and technological innovation as two additional drivers for the evolution of the global food system. This two-way impact between food production and the environment has revealed the necessity for greater sustainability in the world's food system, Antia explained. As global demand for local products increases, so does the demand for refrigerated frozen storage facilities and transportation.
