An Indonesian bomb maker convicted for his role in the deadly 2002 Bali nightclub attacks has apologized to the victims’ families, after his release from prison was met with outrage in Australia. Umar Patek, a member of the al Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah group, was jailed for 20 years in 2012 after he was found guilty of making bombs that ripped through two Bali nightclubs, killing 202 people, including 88 Australians and 38 Indonesians. “I apologize to the Australian people who have been deeply impacted by the Bali bombing,” he added. Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said soon after he was freed that it was a “difficult day” for Australians who lost loved ones and relatives in the attacks. Paul Vanni, community and partnerships officer at Sydney’s Coogee Dolphins rugby team, which lost six members in the Bali attacks, dismissed the apology.

Irrelevant in the 2022 NFL Draft to spoiling Tom Brady’s homecoming, San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Brock Purdy has almost seen it all following Sunday’s 35-7 blowout win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy throws a touchdown pass to running back Christian McCaffrey during their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, December 11, 2022. Tony Avelar/APAfter the game, Purdy called it “surreal” to be playing on the same field as Brady. “Just standing there, like ‘man that’s Tom Brady,’ talking to guys and dapping guys up and stuff,” Purdy told reporters with a huge smile on his face. They believed in me when I was the last draft pick and all that stuff.”Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady runs against San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa during the second half of their game.
Whether it be draft position or playoff seedings, each game means something to each team as Week 14 of the NFL season kicks off in earnest on Sunday. And, as a result, the Jets’ season has metamorphosed from shoots of optimism to playoff hopes. Sunday will see Tom Brady face off against seventh-round rookie Brock Purdy as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel west to face the San Francisco 49ers. Despite playing his first meaningful action and with his team’s season possibly on the line, Purdy never looked fazed, leading the 49ers to an important victory. Several law firms adopted the Mansfield rule in 2017, which aims to increase diversity in leadership. It's effectively the NFL's two-decade-old Rooney rule: a requirement that nonwhite candidates be considered when teams hire for coaching and front-office jobs. Law firms followed professional football in 2017 with its version of the Rooney rule, called the Mansfield rule. At first, the Rooney rule seemed to catch on when teams started to hire more coaches of color and a dozen general managers of color when that position was added to the Rooney rule. "For the Rooney rule to work," he said, "there has to be a true commitment from the owners.
The NFL and the Washington Commanders misled the public about an investigation into decades-long misconduct in the team's workplace, according to a report from the House Oversight and Reform Committee released Thursday after a yearlong probe. The panel also said the NFL and Commanders owner Daniel Snyder impeded its investigation into the matter. The NFL told her to "complete a written report of its findings" surrounding the Commanders' workplace culture. But then the league refused to release the written report, instead presenting their findings orally in order to "better preserve" witness anonymity and confidentiality. In 2014, the NFL released a 144-page written report related to an investigation into the Miami Dolphins' alleged culture of harassment and bullying.

Many are upset that the Black former superstar is leaving a Historically Black University where his leadership could continue to provide a solid foundation for young Black athletes. Sanders proved his ability in his first coaching job by making the Jackson State Tigers the best team among HBCUs. In his final game at Jackson State, Sanders will lead the Tigers against North Carolina Central University in the Cricket Celebration Bowl on Dec. 17 in Atlanta. At each previous stop in Saban’s head coaching journey (University of Toledo, Michigan State University, Louisiana State University and the NFL’s Miami Dolphins), he may well have disappointed some players who signed on hoping he would stay. His son, Jackson State star quarterback Shedeur Sanders, is expected to do just that and follow his father.
Siegler is a cognitive “SuperAger,” possessing a brain as sharp as people 20 to 30 years younger. She is part of an elite group enrolled in the Northwestern SuperAging Research Program, which has been studying the elderly with superior memories for 14 years. Once accepted, colorful 3D scans are taken of the brain and cognitive testing and brain scans are repeated every year or so. A SuperAger’s brain, usually donated to the research program by participants after death, also has bigger, healthier cells in the entorhinal cortex. SuperAger brains had three times fewer tau tangles, or abnormal formations of protein within nerve cells, than the brains of cognitively healthy controls, the study also found.
Published in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution scientific journal on Wednesday, the study reveals that the great bustards ate an abundance of corn poppies (Papaver rhoeas) and purple viper’s bugloss (Echium plantagineum). In humans, corn poppies have been used for their medicinal properties as a sedative and pain relief while purple viper’s bugloss can be toxic if consumed. Both plants were highly effective in killing or inhibiting the effects of the protozoa and nematodes, according to the study. The purple viper’s bugloss showed moderate defensive action against the fungi. “We normally associate self-medication in species like primates, so to see researchers studying endangered birds is brilliant,” Rose told CNN.

Musk is currently the CEO of three different companies: SpaceX, Tesla, and, of course, Twitter. But like many CEOs, he's accumulated a huge fortune by juggling several companies and directorships at once. While Musk may be an extreme case, he's also the perfect example of the modern CEO: a chaotic blend of unproductive micromanagement and highly-paid absenteeism. In the extreme, some CEOs like Musk have taken on the management of multiple large companies. And Musk isn't the only executive who would be better served focusing on one task.

Sabin contributed $55,000 this year to a pro-DeSantis PAC, Friends of Ron DeSantis, which supported the Florida governor's successful bid for reelection, according to state campaign finance records. Trump, meanwhile, has scheduled a primetime announcement Tuesday night, heavily hinting that it will be his presidential campaign launch. Trump also endorsed dozens of winning House candidates, but many of those Republicans were in firmly red districts without a serious competitor. Ross hosted a fundraiser for Trump at his Hamptons home in 2019 to raise money for Trump's campaign and the Republican National Committee. While Levine didn't personally donate to Trump's races, he helped raise campaign cash for several other candidates Trump endorsed in the last cycle.

Miami Beach voters in a series of referendums last week derailed three major real-estate projects from top U.S. developers, reflecting a budding backlash against certain new development plans for the city. Property developer Stephen Ross , Related Cos. chairman and owner of the Miami Dolphins, had been planning to replace the historic Deauville Beach Resort on Collins Avenue with a new hotel and development. Starwood Capital Management , led by Chief Executive Barry Sternlicht , and Miami developer Don Peebles Jr. have also been preparing to build new office towers near the ocean.
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A once-luxurious Miami Beach hotel that hosted the Beatles and President John F. Kennedy during its 1960s heyday was imploded Sunday after falling into disrepair and abandonment in recent years. The Beatles performed there in 1964, recording six songs for “The Ed Sullivan Show,” drawing an estimated television audience of 70 million people. Miami Beach officials and the family that owned the hotel sparred over millions of dollars in fines for various code violations. City officials say Ross may still be interested in purchasing the lot if an alternate plan can be worked out.

Laremy Tunsil poses for a photo with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell after being picked No. 13 overall by the Miami Dolphins in the 2016 NFL draft. The Miami Dolphins have built one of the NFL’s most talented rosters through the dividends of something surprising: a big guy and a gas-mask bong. When the Dolphins pulled off the biggest blockbuster of the trade deadline, acquiring pass rusher Bradley Chubb from the Denver Broncos for a first-round pick, it was yet another ripple stemming from a bizarre moment that occurred years earlier.
There's been an increase in dolphin strandings around the Black Sea since the war in Ukraine began. Dolphins and porpoises talk and navigate via sound, which may be disrupted by the loud noises of war. "Russia's war against Ukraine escalated in February 2022 puts the entire Black Sea basin under a huge threat. Dolphins, porpoises, and whales have an acute sense of hearing and use echolocation to map out their environment. The areas were identified as important habitats for three species that the IUCN classifies as threatened or endangered: the Black Sea common dolphin, the Black Sea harbor porpoise, and the Black Sea bottlenose dolphin.
