CNN —A Singaporean man has been ordered to repay more than 38 million Australian dollars ($25.7 million) after he lost big during a gambling spree at an Australian casino over the span of a few days. Queensland’s Supreme Court ruled Monday that Yew Choy Wong owed that amount to the Star Gold Coast, as well as the casino’s legal fees and interest. He had racked up losses of 47.3 million Australian dollars ($31.5 million) there between July 26 and August 2, 2018. Star Entertainment, which owns the Gold Coast casino, declined to comment on the case. The casino also paid Wong hundreds of thousands of dollars in goodwill payments following his complaints, the ruling said.

Australia plans a minimum age limit for social media use
  + stars: | 2024-09-10 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
Australia intends to set a minimum age limit for children to use social media, citing concerns about mental and physical health. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his center-left government would run an age verification trial before introducing age minimum laws for social media this year. The law would put Australia among the first countries in the world to impose an age restriction on social media. Australia has one of the world’s most online populations, with four-fifths of its 26 million people on social media, according to tech industry figures. But the inquiry has also heard concerns about whether an age limit would inadvertently harm younger people by encouraging them to hide their online activity.

The European Union flag is seen with Google's logo. Europe's top court on Tuesday upheld a 2.4 billion euro ($2.65 billion) fine imposed on Google for abusing its dominant position by favoring its own shopping comparison service. The fine stems from an antitrust investigation by the European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, which concluded in 2017. Google appealed the decision with the General Court, the EU's second-highest court, which also upheld the fine. Google then brought the case before the European Court of Justice (ECJ), the EU's top court.

A Colorado man on a river trip to the Grand Canyon was found dead over the weekend, officials said Monday, in what appears to be the seventh death at the park since July 31. Patrick Horton, 59, was on day 10 of a noncommercial trip along the Colorado River when others in his party found his body Saturday morning near the river, the park said in a news release. The Grand Canyon recorded an average of 17 deaths per year from 2014 to 2023, a park spokeswoman has said. Since 2019, 2 million to 5 million people have visited the Grand Canyon each year, park data shows. Park data that looked at mortality reports from 2014 to 2019 shows that "photographing" was the most lethal recreational activity at the Grand Canyon.

"If I wasn't Tyreek Hill, Lord knows, I probably would have been, like, worst-case scenario, I would have been shot or would have been locked up" and "put behind bars, you know, for a simple speeding ticket," Hill told NBC News. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The U.S. government has temporarily halted a plan to remove iconic stray cats that live in a historic district in Puerto Rico’s capital until a lawsuit opposing the project is resolved, a nonprofit announced Monday. The ruling was cheered by those fighting a decision by the U.S. National Park Service to remove an estimated 200 cats that meander a seaside fortress that Spain built in colonial times. It’s part of the San Juan National Historic Site that the U.S. National Park Service operates. The U.S. National Park Service didn’t immediately respond to a message for comment. Aronoff said in a phone interview that removing the current cats is an impossible task since new cats would take their place.

Police in Springfield, Ohio, said Monday they had received no credible reports of immigrants harming pets, contradicting a claim by Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance. They added that they had no information to support similar assertions about immigrants squatting or disrupting traffic. There is a long history of conservative politicians and pundits denigrating Haitian immigrants in particular, including with baseless allegations of cannibalism, according to historians who have studied the former French colony. “Please vote for Trump so Haitian immigrants don’t eat us,” Cruz wrote on X, as a caption on a photo of cats. “Haitian immigrants are here legally, under the Immigration Parole Program,” the website says, referring to a federal humanitarian program for migrants.

It was 2019, and the second Democratic presidential primary debate was unfolding in Detroit when then-Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii went for the jugular. Still, it turned into a major moment for Gabbard — even though Harris forcefully responded — and it was a standout episode in her short-lived 2020 presidential campaign. It’s coming into view again now in the run-up to Tuesday’s second presidential debate after Donald Trump tapped Gabbard to assist him in his debate preparations. “Tulsi Gabbard whipped Kamala Harris’ butt on the debate stage,” Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said. Cheating in India's medical entrance examCheating has, in particular, plagued India's highly competitive medical entrance exam, also known as the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET). "Question papers are sold at extravagantly high prices," Ashok Rathore, a police officer who investigated cheating linked to India's medical school exam, told the Journal. The person said they can provide next year's medical entrance exam questions for around 1 lakh rupees ($1,200). Those with money can still legally obtain places in private medical colleges if they pay fees ranging from $115,000 to $145,000. The plot to topple Putin

But it was only when Putin launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine , in 2022, that Ammosov began to plot the overthrow of his homeland. As I found in months of wide-ranging interviews, everyone aspiring to a new Russian revolution grasps the seemingly impossible odds of their bid to topple Putin. At least 21 civilians were killed and 63 injured in the air raid on Sunday, Sennar’s acting governor Tawfiq Muhammad Ali said Monday, according to state-run news agency SUNA. The lawyers’ group said more than 30 people were killed in the RSF attack, which it said targeted a market and other civilian locations. The activist group also attributed a similar airstrike in the nearby al-Souki town that killed four people to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). Both the SAF and the RSF have frequently accused each other of killing civilians as war between them enters a second year. The report called for the deployment of an independent force to protect civilians as well as a nationwide arms embargo.

The U.S. Federal Reserve can afford to make a jumbo 50 basis point rate cut next week without spooking markets, an analyst has suggested, as opinion on the central bank's forthcoming meeting remains hotly divided. "I would not be surprised if they jumped all the way to 50 basis points," Yoshikami told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe." "That would be considered, on one hand, a very positive sign the Fed is doing what is needed to support jobs growth," he said. "I think the Fed at this point is ready to get out ahead of this." His comment follow similar remarks Friday from Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, who said the Fed should deliver a half-point interest rate cut at its next meeting, contending that it went "too far, too fast" with its previous policy tightening.

With the presidential election approaching, experts are sounding alarms about the upcoming expiration of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, or TCJA. Without action from Congress, trillions in tax breaks enacted by former President Donald Trump via the TCJA will expire after 2025. "If the 2017 tax cuts are allowed to expire after 2025, about 62% of taxpayers would see their tax bills go up," said Erica York, senior economist and research director at the Tax Foundation. "That's because the TCJA provided tax cuts for the vast majority of taxpayers." Both Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, have called for tax changes that could affect millions of Americans.

Despite a 7% rebound on Monday, Trump Media has lost nearlythree-quarters (72%) of its value since peaking at $66.22 on March 27. The wipeout reinforces concerns raised by experts who have repeatedly warned that Trump Media’s multi-billion-dollar price tag defies logic. The company is losing money, generating very little revenue and Truth Social remains a relatively tiny player in social media. In August, Trump Media launched Truth+, a TV streaming platform on iOS, Android and the Web versions of Truth Social. It’s possible Trump Media’s stock market fortunes could turn, especially with the former president’s high-profile debate Tuesday with Harris.
