London Stadium, London CNN —As the sun descended in east London, so did tens of thousands of baseball fans as America’s pastime once again made its way across the Atlantic Ocean to England’s capital. The seven-time All-Star’s Great British love-in continued throughout the weekend, and in the opening game of the series, Harper played the starring role. If these international events are put on to attract new fans, Harper was certainly doing his best to persuade them to follow baseball. Kaitlin Olson (far left), McElhenney (second from right), former Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley (far right) and Harper participate in opening ceremonies. The wait is now on to see which two teams will do battle in the next edition of the London Series.

Here are the primaries to keep an eye on:Nancy Mace, a Trump vice-presidential contender, will be on the ballot in South Carolina. The primary, in the state’s First Congressional District, comes just days after the House Ethics Committee started looking into Ms. Mace’s use of a congressional reimbursement program. Mr. Brown will face Jeff Gunter, a wealthy dermatologist who was Mr. Trump’s ambassador to Iceland, as well as Jim Marchant, who has supported Mr. Trump’s lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him, and a number of other minor candidates. Opinion | Reflections on Gen Z and ‘Sellout Culture’

To the Editor:Re “‘Selling Out’ Isn’t an Insult to Gen Z” (Sunday Business, May 26):Francesca Mari captures the zeitgeist that we in the social sector are battling: Even as the world’s challenges are more visible than ever, the percentage of graduates putting their full-time energy toward tackling them isn’t growing. Not only do we need this generation tackling world challenges as soon as possible, but as Ms. Mari’s reporting points out, graduates’ early destinations shape the people they become. Research about the impact of the Teach for All network’s two-year teaching commitments shows dramatic effects on participants’ beliefs about the roots of inequity and how to address it. Before we blame the young people, let’s consider what we’re doing as a society to foster their sense of agency and intentionality about where to put their time and energy. As parents, influencers and educators, we need to foster choices that will shape the future we collectively want to see.

During a few weeks each year or so, an international team of scientists spends long days at sea searching for the most endangered marine mammal on Earth: the vaquita porpoise. Results from this year’s survey, issued on Tuesday, were disappointing: Researchers estimate they saw six to eight individual vaquitas there, the lowest result ever recorded. Since at least 2019, the visual surveys have focused on one zone where acoustic monitoring and other research has suggested the remaining animals congregate. “It’s worrisome,” said Barbara Taylor, a longtime vaquita researcher who led the survey. “We just need to go out and find out whether the vaquitas have moved someplace else and adapt the management accordingly.”

Representative Kelly Armstrong won the Republican nomination for governor of North Dakota, The Associated Press said on Tuesday, defeating the state’s lieutenant governor, Tammy Miller, and positioning himself as the strong favorite in the general election. The primary featured two Republicans who are well known in the state and whose platforms shared many similarities. Mr. Armstrong, a lawyer and a former state Republican Party chairman, was elected to Congress in 2018 from North Dakota’s lone House district. Ms. Miller, an accountant and businesswoman, was appointed as lieutenant governor last year after working as Gov. After failing to gain traction in the Republican presidential primary, he announced in January that he would not seek another four years as governor.

New York CNN —Dynastic hot dog eating champion Joey Chestnut will not compete in this year’s Nathan’s hot dog eating contest after he struck a deal with plant-based food company Impossible Foods. “We are devastated to learn that Joey Chestnut has chosen to represent a rival brand that sells plant-based hot dogs rather than competing in the 2024 Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest,” the Major League Eating organization, which oversees the event, said in a statement. The organization said that to come back Chestnut must renounce deals with brands that rival Nathan’s. We would love nothing more than to have him at Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest, which he has dominated for years. Joey Chestnut, Nathan’s and its parent company, Smithfield Foods, did not reply to requests for comment.

In 2013, the share of self-identified liberals among young women exceeded the share among young men by 5 percentage points; by 2023, that gap was nearly four times as large. (In that survey, young men were substantially more likely than young women to say they rely on YouTube as a major source of news.) (In the Harvard poll, one-fourth of young women identified in some way as LGBTQ, more than double the share of young men.) “He’s got to make up for the defection of young men by winning young women by more, and he’s got to get every young woman he can out to vote,” said Lake, the Democratic pollster. Biden’s best hope of avoiding a catastrophic decline in his youth support is that the number of young women Trump repels exceeds the number of young men he attracts.

Voters in North Dakota approved a ballot measure that sets a maximum age for representing the state in Congress, The Associated Press said on Tuesday. Experts said they believed North Dakota was the first state to impose such a requirement on members of Congress, though they said the measure is likely to be challenged in court. The ballot measure, to amend the North Dakota Constitution, bars congressional candidates who would turn 81 or older by the end of the year before their term ends from being eligible for office. The measure provided a rare glimpse into how one state’s voters think about age at a time when questions over the effectiveness of older political leaders have been part of the national conversation. The campaign in North Dakota to pass an age limit on the state’s members of Congress began as many Americans have debated whether age ought to be a factor in this year’s presidential contest.

The new numbers show violent crime from January to March dropped 15.2% compared to the same period in 2023, while murders fell 26.4% and reported rapes decreased by 25.7%. CNN —One of the benefits of streaming has been an increased flow of series and movies from around the globe, as services try to keep their shelves filled with fresh alternatives. Perhaps that’s one reason why data indicate more people – especially young adults, who are more prone to second-screen viewing and multitasking – are watching shows in their primary language with the subtitles on. The survey found that those using subtitles cite two primary factors in equal measure: Subtitles enhance their comprehension, and they help them understand accents. The service has increased the number of films and series that support audio descriptions (AD) and subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH). The trend suggests viewers are actively sampling internationally produced material as they seek (and often stumble upon) options via streaming platforms.

CNN —Hugely popular US television shows like “Shark Tank,” “Survivor” and even “American Idol” are based on hit programs from foreign countries. What better way to shake things up — and spark public interest — than having Biden and Trump spend a weekend together with TV cameras capturing almost every move? That means there’s a possibility that Trump could be sentenced to prison or home confinement for an extended period of time. If that were to happen, the show would be a no-go — unless Biden were to agree to spend the weekend filming in Mar-A-Lago, if Trump should get sentenced to house arrest. If the former president were to get hard time, Biden would have to be game to spend a weekend in Trump’s prison block.

President Biden on Sunday wrapped up a five-day visit to France by making a point to visit a cemetery for American soldiers killed in World War I. For Mr. Biden — running against Mr. Trump again — visiting the cemetery was meant to send a message to voters back home. “America showed up.”Mr. Biden was talking about the United States military during World War I. But he might as well have been talking about Mr. Trump’s refusal to show up six years ago. Asked directly what he was trying to say about his rival in this year’s presidential race, Mr. Biden paused for a moment.
