Temperatures during the lunar night can plunge to minus 208 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 133 degrees Celsius), according to NASA. And Moon Sniper wasn’t expected to withstand even one lunar night, which is a period of darkness on the moon lasting about two weeks. Riding out the lunar nightThe mission team communicated with Moon Sniper on April 23 after the lander rode out its third lunar night. From JAXAIn addition to surviving the extreme cold of the lunar night, Moon Sniper has also endured the searing temperatures of the lunar day, which can reach 250 degrees Fahrenheit (121 degrees Celsius), according to NASA. “If we work with our physiology knowing that women are women and men are men, knowing that women are not small men, then imagine the (health) outcomes,” she said at a 2019 TED talk. Women of all ages should focus on strength training to help reduce risk of dementia, said exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist Dr. Stacy Sims (not shown). Dr. Stacy Sims said women should prioritize eating more protein to support building muscle, especially as bodies age. But if we have that lean mass from strength training, it really helps calm down that rate of change. Drinking something cold right after exercise helps bring that blood back centrally, reduces metabolites and starts the reparation process.

Nearing the end of a whirlwind Middle East trip this week, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken finished meetings with the Israeli president and relatives of American hostages held by Hamas, left his beachside hotel in Tel Aviv and shook hands with protesters gathered outside. He looked them in the eye and said there was a new hostages-for-cease-fire deal on the table that Hamas should take. “Bringing your loved ones home is at the heart of everything we’re trying to do, and we will not rest until everyone — man, woman, soldier, civilian, young, old — is back home,” he said. That public show of empathy with frustrated protesters is something that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has avoided since the war began in October. And, lately, he has focused his recent public comments on an imminent ground offensive — an invasion of the city of Rafah in southern Gaza “with or without” a cease-fire deal, as the Israeli leader put it on Tuesday.

Brisbane and Sydney, Australia CNN —The grassy expanse of the University of Queensland’s Great Court has long been the center of student life at the Australian state’s biggest university. “We will not be intimidated by these people,” said Students for Palestine Monash representative Madeline Curkovic. New York CNN —From New York to Los Angeles, college campus protests against the war in Gaza turned violent Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning as police sought to clear campuses of protesters in many locations, leading to mass arrests. The flash grenades emit a bright flash and a very loud bang and are typically used to shock and disorient. Officers arrested more than 200 protesters overnight at Columbia and made dozens of additional arrests at City College of New York located about a mile north in Manhattan, according to law enforcement sources. Columbia announced the NYPD could stay on campus through at least May 17, past the university’s commencement ceremony now scheduled for May 15. Among the throng of Columbia University student protesters gathered outside Hamilton Hall on campus early Tuesday morning was a gray-haired woman in her 60s. In a video captured by The New York Times, the protesters can be seen trying to push their way toward the building as the woman — decades older than the crowd — pleads with two young counterprotesters trying to block them from barricading the occupied building. “This is ridiculous,” the woman says, as the men stand with their backs against the doors, apparently trying to keep protesters away from the building. “We’re trying to end a genocide in Gaza.”The woman at the center of this encounter on the night protesters stormed and then occupied the building was Lisa Fithian, a longtime activist and trainer for left-wing protesters whom the Police Department would later publicly describe as a “confirmed professional agitator.”

Florida’s Abortion Ban Will Reach Well Beyond FloridaAugust 2021 Miles to nearest clinic offering abortions after 6 weeks 50 150 250 350 450 Source: Caitlin Myers, Middlebury College As of Wednesday, Florida has banned abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. Florida, North Carolina and Virginia were the only states in the South offering abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. Women in several states will need to travel hundreds of miles farther to reach a clinic. Florida’s new ban could change that, researchers said — an illustration of how regional abortion access has become. If the amendment earns the support of 60 percent of voters, it will reverse the ban and protect abortion rights until about 24 weeks.

Within weeks, the two-year-old US Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is set to run out of funds, and Congress appears unlikely to authorize more. Even as many older and rural Americans may be thrust into financial hardship due to the ACP’s collapse, indigenous communities could fare even worse. Because tribal members can now work remotely, they are no longer forced to move away from their communities to seek opportunity, they told CNN. For example, Mitchell said, after decades of decline in Mohawk fluency, a growing number of tribal members are now involved in online language immersion. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig) Seth Wenig/AP/FileInstead, some say, the collapse of the ACP will become another stain on the US government’s centuries-long track record of breaking promises to tribal communities.

Feelings of anger adversely affect blood vessel health, according to a study published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Heart Association. How 40 minutes could turn into a longer problemResearchers in this study observed three major ways that anger impacted blood vessel health, Shimbo said. First, it made it harder for blood vessels to dilate in response to ischemia, or a restriction, he said. After the eight-minute task meant to induce anger, the impacts on blood vessels were seen for up to 40 minutes, he said. Maybe there are ways — such as exercise or medication — to treat the adverse effects of anger on blood vessels, he speculated.

New York CNN —Wednesday’s Federal Reserve policy decision will likely be pretty boring for investors — officials are widely expected to keep interest rates the same, just as they have since July 2023. They think that the Fed may curtail its quantitative tightening (QT) program — that’s the selling off of its assets to decrease money supply and increase interest rates — by as much as half. Those purchases ended up pushing down interest rates in certain parts of the economy, like housing and auto sales. That led to a “repo crisis”, where the interest rates for overnight loans between banks spiked unusually high. That’s because a taper should send bond prices higher, and interest rates lower.

In a growing number of cases, that reason can be traced to one proximate source — former President Donald Trump. Or more precisely — how he has torn apart America and our democracy that, for my nearly 80 years on this planet, I have cherished. 2024’s safest sunscreens for summer and year-round

The annual report provides a database of products by brand and type, while also breaking them down into the top recreational sunscreens, the best daily SPF (sun protection factor) and the safest sunscreens for babies and children. Many of the safest choices will be mineral-based instead of chemical-based sunscreens, said Emily Spilman, EWG’s healthy living science program manager. Mineral sunscreens work by physically deflecting and blocking the sun’s rays, as opposed to sunscreens with chemicals that absorb UV rays and release heat as they break down. In 2019, oxybenzone was an ingredient in 60% of all sunscreen products tested by EWG, dropping to 30% in 2022. By 2023 and again in 2024, the chemical was used in only 6% of tested products, which included sunscreens and daily moisturizers and lip balms with sunscreen protection.
