The men of the 35th Marine Brigade transfer newly arrived American-made 120-millimeter mortar rounds to their temporary hideout. The bangs of outgoing artillery and mortar rounds cut through the tranquillity of abandoned fields. But like the long waits of the soldiers, the Ukrainian counteroffensive is a slow grind. As soon as the 120-mm American-made mortar rounds were delivered, they were cleaned and prepared for firing. Ukrainian soldiers say many corpses were collected earlier and many more could still be in the fields.

UNITED NATIONS, May 15 (Reuters) - The United States on Monday urged Mali's transition government to pursue an "independent, impartial, efficient, exhaustive, and transparent investigation" to hold accountable those responsible for the likely execution of hundreds of people in one village. The identity of the white men was not clear, U.N. Human Rights Office regional spokesperson Seif Magango said. But Western countries have raised concerns over Russian private military contractor Wagner Group's activities in Mali since late 2021, including allegations of its role in Moura. "The United States continues to stand with the Malian people in the fight against terrorism," Miller said in a statement. "Human rights abuses and violations like those committed at Moura will serve only to drive aggrieved civilians into the ranks of terrorists and other armed groups."

LISBON, May 2 (Reuters) - Portugal's infrastructure minister submitted his resignation on Tuesday as a scandal around state-owned airline TAP widened, just four months after his predecessor resigned over the same issue, but the prime minister said he would keep him in the job. Galamba's predecessor, Pedro Nuno Santos, resigned in December in the wake of a scandal involving an irregular severance payment to a former executive board member of TAP. Ourmières-Widener has since been fired after an official inspection found that the severance was illegal. On Sunday, Costa said that neither he nor any member of the government had given orders to SIS to recover the laptop. Singh "categorically conveyed that development of relations between India and China is premised on prevalence of peace and tranquillity at the borders", it said. India accuses China of frequently intruding into its side of the disputed border in violation of agreements signed since the 1990s. China pushed for engagement and cooperation between the two militaries but was told by India that could happen only if there is tranquillity on the border, two Indian sources told Reuters. The two ministers met ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's (SCO) defence ministers' gathering in New Delhi. It is also the first visit by a Chinese defence minister to India since the violence in the Himalayas began in May 2020.

[1/2] A man looks at Vermeer's painting 'The Milkmaid' at an exhibition bringing together 28 works by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer at the Rijksmusuem in Amsterdam, Netherlands February 6, 2023. REUTERS/Piroschka van de WouwAMSTERDAM, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Twenty eight paintings by Johannes Vermeer go on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam this week, the largest ever exhibition of works of the 17th-century Dutch master, known for his expertise at rendering light and intimate household scenes. "What's quite striking when you look at Vermeer is that in his paintings, it's mostly women who are the protagonists," said curator Pieter Roelofs, noting Vermeer had seven daughters. Artists and scholars dispute whether Vermeer may have made use of a 'camera obscura', a forerunner of the modern photocamera. Roelofs said Vermeer's works are more than something a good eye and skilled hand can create.
LISBON, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Further consolidation of Portugal's banking sector is inevitable, European Central Bank member Mario Centeno told Reuters on Wednesday, calling "remarkable" the recent progress the country's banks have made on strengthening capital and reducing risk. Analysts have said that Portuguese banks should bet on M&A operations to achieve better competitive conditions, despite the five largest players' owning 80% to 85% of banking assets. Portugal's banks are still scarred from a debt crisis and a spike in NPLs after the 2010-13 recession. The NPL ratio for Portugal's lenders was 3.4% of total credit in June, versus 17.9% in mid-2016. "Although I am very satisfied with the evolution...there is no point in resting, we have to challenge ourselves," Centeno said.
Factbox: How France is forcing striking fuel staff back to work

HOW CAN THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT ORDER STRIKING FUEL STAFF BACK TO WORK? Once employees are notified of a requisition order, they have to comply, or they could face up to six months in prison and a 10,000-euro ($9,700) fine. "Requisition orders are very rare, very exceptional," said labour lawyer Zoran Illic, who often represents workers' unions. "I don't know one lawyer who would advise an employee to refuse to comply with a requisition order, because the consequences would be too serious." When nationwide strikes paralysed France’s oil refining industry back in 2010, then-Prime Minister Francois Fillon's conservative government used requisition orders to bring back TotalEnergies' refinery staff back to work.
