SpaceX workers reportedly put in over 80-hour work weeks in Elon Musk's race to colonize Mars. A Reuters investigation looked at 600 work injuries at SpaceX from 2014 to present. AdvertisementAdvertisementElon Musk's rocket company, which employs about 13,000 people, had at least 600 worker injuries over the course of 9 years across its facilities, the publication reported. But, the company has responded to OSHA inquiries saying it is not liable for the worker injuries as the company gives workers safety training, Reuters reported. Reuters' report comes after some SpaceX employees wrote an open letter last year criticizing Musk's behavior as a "source of distraction and embarrassment."

Sen. Joe Manchin, the West Virginia Democrat who often bucked party leadership and flirted recently with leaving the party altogether, announced he would not seek reelection on Thursday in a blow to Democrats’ chances of retaining the seat. “After months of deliberation and long conversations with my family, I believe in my heart of hearts that I’ve accomplished what I set out to do for West Virginia,” Manchin said in a video statement posted on social media. “I have made one of the toughest decisions of my life and decided that I will not be running for reelection to the United States Senate.”Manchin, 76, was first elected to the Senate in 2010, after serving as the governor of West Virginia. He faced tough reelection prospects next year in the deep red state that had led many to question whether he would bow out of the race. And recent teasing about leaving the party or launching a third-party bid for the presidency added to the intrigue.

A redacted transcript unsealed late on Wednesday showed DuckDuckGo had struck a deal with Apple in 2014 to be shown as an option on Apple devices. Soon after, DuckDuckGo began pressing Apple to be made the default choice for users who wanted to work in privacy mode, which limited data collected on the user. DuckDuckGo has about 2.5% of the search market, he testified. In those meetings, Weinberg said, Apple executives would bring up the concern that its distribution agreements with Google may bar the change. The Justice Department has said that Google, which has some 90% of the search market, pays some $10 billion annually to Apple, other smartphone makers and others to be the default search.

All artists teach their audience how to view them, by the way they tell jokes, their style, the level of absurdity. What makes Hasan Minhaj such a troubling example is that his style, onstage and often off in interviews, suggested we should believe him. Lying in comedy isn’t necessarily wrong. The problem with only considering the standard of emotional truth is that it can blind you to the impact on the actual world outside your emotions. You could say that the emotional truth behind the Patriot Act was that the terrorism of Sept. 11 required extreme tactics to feel safe, but that doesn’t make the legislation right.

My husband and I are looking at houses to buy, but we both have variable income. We then decided how much of that income we were comfortable devoting to a mortgage payment (including insurance and taxes). Equipped with our monthly payment number, we could play with the other variables in the housing equation: the mortgage rate, the home price, and our down payment. When toying with the numbers, we realized that a larger down payment dropped our monthly mortgage amount significantly. So we've decided to sell our two rental properties to have a larger down payment and a lower monthly payment.

Regulators and investors are putting pressure on the real estate industry to go green. The most obvious end-users are commercial real estate owners, but Ellis says the revenue potential is far bigger than that. The company's fundraising comes as more policymakers seek to require landlords and real estate investors to reduce their carbon emissions. Capital hasn't been far behind, with leading proptech venture fund Fifth Wall raising a $500 million fund to decarbonize real estate. Opinion: Don’t expect history to be kind to Netanyahu

CNN —There is no question that history books will dedicate considerable space to the impact that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had on the fate of his embattled nation. But in Israel’s parliamentary system, the prime minister controls not just the executive but also the legislature through his majority coalition in parliament. Without judiciary oversight, the prime minister and his bloc have little to stop them as they push their agenda. Frida GhitisTo become prime minister, Netanyahu had to enlist the support of enough parties to have 61 votes out of the 120 seats in the Knesset. When asked whom they would prefer as prime minister, just 34% said Netanyahu over the center-right Benny Gantz, with opposition leader Yair Lapid also beating the Israeli leader.

Apple's new Vision Pro virtual reality headset is displayed during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) at the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California, on June 5, 2023. College classes and internship programs are employing VR headsets to teach students and early talent the ropes of an office environment. Laura Bedalov, a customer success manager at Cappfinity, sets up the virtual reality workplace environment that colleges and internship programs are using to train young people. Within UCD's virtual reality world, which was developed in partnership with Cappfinity, students may take on the role of a human resources employee choosing a job candidate to hire. Beyoncé’s two solo releases before “Renaissance” — her 2013 self-titled album and “Lemonade,” from 2016 — were billed as “visual albums,” featuring a fully realized music video for each track. Throughout the set, Beyoncé wove interpolations of her predecessors’ songs throughout her own, as if to place her music in a larger continuum. The grandiose “I Care” segued into a bit of “River Deep, Mountain High,” in honor of Tina Turner, who died in May. (The merch on sale at a Renaissance Tour pop-up shop in the days before the show included a hand-held fan emblazoned with the song title “Heated” for $40. The lack of liquidity is making it even more difficult for VCs to raise new funds, analysts said. PitchBook's Nalin Patel said LP money could become trapped in companies that were "overdue an exit." Venture capital-backed exits have continued to collapse in 2023, piling pressure on general partners already facing a torrid time trying to raise funds from institutional investors. This represented a 40% decline on the $161.4 billion worth of exits posted during the same period last year. In a performing exit market growth stage companies like fintech giant Stripe, buy now, pay later firm Klarna, and software firm Databricks may all have already gone public.

The ‘14th Amendment Option’ Is a Trap for Biden

Wonder Land: Whether it's the border, the economy or crime, the progressive way of governance is that no policy mistake can change—ever. Images: AP/AFP/Getty Images Composite: Mark KellyThe threat of a debt default is again in the air, with the possible dreadful effect of ruining the credit of the U.S. To stave off that default and embarrassment, President Biden is toying with the idea of asserting that the debt ceiling violates the 14th Amendment. Neither the Constitution nor the law nor common sense is on his side.
The birth rate in Italy has been declining steadily since the economic crisis in 2008, for reasons demographers agree is rooted in economic insecurity. In France, the birth rate is higher at 1.8 children per woman, according to figures for 2022 from its national statistics agency. The Catholic Church, which is a predominant political force, and the right-wing government under Meloni have both lamented the low birth rate, but have put up roadblocks to ways to remedy the situation. De Luca blames the government for not doing enough for the younger generation, in part because decades of low birth rates have made the youth a minority. Testa fears that the low birth rate is contagious.
