An Epic Pilgrimage Across Three Great Religions
  + stars: | 2023-11-09 | by ( Aatish Taseer | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +111 min
Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

CNN —Private colleges and universities in Florida must now comply with a rule requiring students and faculty to use bathroom and changing facilities aligned with their sex assigned at birth. LGBTQ advocates have slammed the statutes as an effort to erase them from Florida schools and society. “Right now, in the public schools at least, the unisex restroom is the teacher’s restroom. So we have a situation whereby all the nonbinary and transgender (people) and the teachers all line up for this unisex bathroom. The rule does not yet apply to Florida’s state universities like University of Florida, Florida State University and University of Central Florida.

Over a holiday weekend dedicated to labor, this year’s Telluride Film Festival attendees couldn’t help being reminded of striking workers: the members of SAG-AFTRA, the television and film actors’ union currently in a standoff with the Hollywood studios. How a 14-Minute Video on Posture Changed My Life

I crave this feeling, which I associate with sitting in a darkened eye doctor’s office, listening to the soft click of the phoropter. There is another avenue for finding environments that have a swaddling effect on the mind, and that is the sprawling and wildly popular world of ASMR videos on YouTube. Many ASMR videos involve role play, with a YouTuber taking on a specific identity to simulate a one-on-one prom-dress fitting or lice check. While ASMR videos can prompt that nice prickly feeling, they have the broader aim of soothing viewers, many of whom often watch them as a stress-management tool or sleep aid. I started watching ASMR videos during Covid lockdown.

ISTANBUL, May 28 (Reuters) - Merve Dizdar, best actress winner at the Cannes Film Festival, returned to Turkey on Sunday and was met both by cheering fans and sharp criticism, highlighting the extreme polarisation in the country. “I am overwhelmed with the support I see here,” Dizdar told Reuters after casting her vote at an Istanbul school. In her Cannes speech, Dizdar said that she didn’t need to rehearse for the teacher’s role because she has known how such women feel “by heart since the day I was born". "You shall first learn to respect your own country, Merve Dizdar,” Uslu said on Twitter. The Turkish actress was unapologetic.

“I am the teacher that’s under investigation with the Florida Department of Education for indoctrination for showing a Disney movie,” Barbee said in a TikTok post over the weekend. In the post, Barbee explained she played the Disney movie to a class which was partially full after a day of standardized testing. Jordan also provided CNN with a copy of the announcement from the school district to parents. “Yesterday, the Disney movie ‘Strange World’ was shown in your child’s classroom,” the school district said. CNN has reached out to Rodriguez and Hernando County School District and the Florida Department of Education for comment.
Hearing Aids Are Changing. Their Users Are, Too.

Ayla Wing’s middle school students don’t always know what to make of their 26-year-old teacher’s hearing aids. The most common response she hears: “Oh, my grandma has them, too.”But grandma’s hearing aids were never like this: Bluetooth-enabled and connected to her phone, they allow Ms. Wing to toggle with one touch between custom settings. Some of the new models, including Ms. Wing’s, are made by traditional prescription brands, which usually require a visit to a specialist. But the Food and Drug Administration opened up the market last year when it allowed the sale of hearing aids over the counter. In response, brand names like Sony and Jabra began releasing their own products, adding to the new wave of designs and features that appeal to young consumers.
Jeff decided that he and Sam would be the only two permitted to have phones inside, in order to limit photographs. It was something Jeff learned to do from the nurses at Bristol Hospital a million years ago when he was a paramedic. He had already made the mistake when one fluttered out as he was dumping an uneaten lunch into the trash. They would set up staging tables in the tent for mass processing of the evidence, nothing they’d ever done at this scale. The problem was that during these interruptions it was not as if they could just step outside for a break.
Los Angeles School Strike Ends Without New Contracts

LOS ANGELES—Students are set to return to classrooms in the Los Angeles Unified School District on Friday after a three-day labor strike ended, but without contract agreements for 65,000 teachers and support staff in the nation’s second-largest school system. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stepped in this week to help broker a deal between the district and Local 99 of the Service Employees International Union, both sides said. The union, which represents 30,000 bus drivers, cafeteria workers, janitors, teacher’s assistants and other support staff, hasn’t had a contract since 2020.
CHICAGO—Mayor Lori Lightfoot lost her re-election bid by failing to garner enough votes to make a runoff election, a stunning fall for a candidate who had won all 50 of the city’s wards four years ago but had sparred with a powerful teacher’s union and been under fire for her response to rising crime. The Associated Press declared Tuesday night that Paul Vallas , a more moderate Democrat who had won the support of the city’s police union, and Brandon Johnson , a liberal teacher’s union organizer, secured the two spots in April’s runoff election.
The Virginia teacher who was shot by her 6-year-old student texted a loved one before she was wounded that the boy was armed and that school officials were failing to act, according to a source close to the situation. "At least one administrator was notified of a possible weapon," Parker said in a video reviewed by NBC News. The principal and vice principal of Richneck did not respond to requests for comment from the Post on the teacher’s account. It is set to reopen on Monday and will be outfitted with a metal detector, school officials have said. The district has secured funding for 90 state-of-the-art metal detectors that will be placed at all district schools, officials said.
Six Republican members of the North Dakota Legislature introduced a bill Wednesday that would send a clear message to nonhuman-identified students: You’re not wanted in the Roughrider State. This section of the bill appears to be connected to an urban myth about litter boxes in U.S. schools that spread among conservative Republicans ahead of the November election. An NBC News report published in October found this myth — about schools providing accommodations, like litter boxes, for children who identify as cats — to be untrue. While the North Dakota bill does not mention litter boxes, one of the bill's sponsors, state Rep. Lori VanWinkle, told NBC News that her state does indeed have students who don't identify as human. Schools found to be in violation of the policy could be fined up to $500,000 in damages, the bill states.
The family of a 6-year-old boy who shot a first-grade teacher in her classroom earlier this month said the gun retrieved from their home was secured, according to a statement from their attorney. “Our family has always been committed to responsible gun ownership and keeping firearms out of the reach of children. The firearm our son accessed was secured,” according to the Thursday statement provided to NBC News by attorney James Ellenson. She has worked diligently and compassionately to support our family as we sought the best education and learning environment for our son. During a raucous school board meeting Tuesday night, parents, teachers and students told the superintendent and board members teachers teachers were not able to properly discipline problematic students.

VANCOUVER, Wash. — The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled in favor of a former teacher in Vancouver, Washington, concluding that his wearing a hat supporting former President Donald Trump to school was protected speech under the First Amendment. Court documents show that science teacher Eric Dodge brought the “Make America Great Again” baseball cap with him to an Evergreen Public Schools building twice before the 2019-2020 school year. Wy’east Middle School Principal Caroline Garret allegedly told him to use better judgment. Dodge said he was “verbally attacked” by Garret and other school employees after bringing the hat again, and that retaliation amounted to a violation of his First Amendment rights. Michael McFarland, a lawyer representing the school district and Gomes, said his clients are happy with the ruling.

Opinion The 22 Debates That Made Us Rage, Roll Our Eyes, and Change Our Minds in 2022Debating is what we do here at Times Opinion. To many, she was an icon: She ruled for 70 years, presided over the transition from empire to commonwealth and served as a living link to the generation that won World War II. (Though Ben Bernanke, a former Fed chairman himself, wrote in The Times that that wasn’t going to happen.) The United States and its European allies poured weapons and aid into Ukraine, but how was this going to end? As 2022 draws to a close, the fighting continues and peace talks look as distant as ever — which probably means that the debates will continue.

Autumn told Medley it was becoming harder to keep up the facade. Sydney CNN —A former high school teacher found guilty of killing his wife in one of Australia’s longest cold cases has been sentenced to 24 years in prison. New South Wales Supreme Court Justice Ian Harrison handed down the sentence on Friday, having found Chris Dawson guilty in August of murdering his wife Lynette in 1982. The crime saga inspired a 2018 podcast by Australian investigative journalist Hedley Thomas called “Teacher’s Pet,” which gained a cult following. The “Teacher’s Pet” podcast examined the police investigation and gathered new evidence including testimony that Dawson, a professional rugby player turned teacher, had been having sex with one of his students when his wife disappeared 40 years ago. Dawson had pleaded not guilty, instead claiming his wife had walked out on him and their two young children when they were just 2 and 4 years old.

The slain teacher, Saw Tun Moe, was a longtime educator who had participated in anti-military protests before taking charge of a high school founded by the country’s pro-democracy movement in his native Thit Nyi Naung village. Saw Tun Moe also taught mathematics at his village school and another nearby alternative school and was involved in the administration of Thit Nyi Naung, where he lived with his family. She said Saw Tun Moe was taken to Taung Myint village, almost a mile north of Thit Nyi Naung, and killed there the following day. A villager from Taung Myint village said he saw Saw Tun Moe’s body at about 11 a.m. Monday after the soldiers had left. I immediately knew that it was Teacher Moe.
