The beach is more about broken glass from generations of illicit parties than sand. The roar and squeal of a nearby railway locomotive compete with the birdsong. The wind carries a sweet chemical scent from a cooking oil processing plant to the west. But amid all this blight peeks out a most surprising sight: familiar yellow signs sporting the beaver logo of Parks Canada. In a country with national parks set amid majestic mountains and vast expanses of wilderness, this unprepossessing stretch of land in Windsor, Ontario, is set to become part of Canada’s newest national park.

Interest rates influence our financial lives in numerous ways: Savers are now benefiting from higher-yielding bank accounts, while people carrying heavy revolving debt loads continue to be squeezed. It’s been a year since interest rates reached a two-decade high, but they may soon begin to reverse course. Now, Fed officials want to be sure prices remain under control while considering its second objective, which is to keep a strong job market. If interest rates are elevated for too long, they risk weakening the employment picture. The central bank uses interest rates to influence the broader economy.

It’s been a year since interest rates reached a two-decade high, but they may soon begin to reverse course. The Federal Reserve is expected to hold its benchmark interest rate steady on Wednesday, while signaling that a cut is possible when policy-setting officials meet again in September. CNN —Nicolás Maduro, the authoritarian leader of Venezuela, has been reelected as president, the country’s election authority has announced, amid allegations of electoral irregularities by the opposition. Maduro will hold office for a third consecutive six-year term – representing the continuity of “Chavismo” in power, which started in 1999 at the hands of former president Hugo Chávez. Maduro has been in power since Chávez’s death in 2013. The vote has come at a crucial moment for Venezuela, an oil-rich nation that experienced the worst economic crash of a peacetime country in recent history. In the capital Caracas, opposition supporters were seen crying and hugging after the results were announced.

At the city’s main military base, where Maduro lives, people were seen setting fire to the strongman’s election posters. The CNE, which is stacked with Maduro allies, has yet to issue final vote tallies from Sunday’s election. “Venezuela has the best electoral system in the world!” CNE president Elvis Amoroso announced before proceeding with the formal announcement. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro arrives with his wife Cilia Flores for a ceremony where the National Electoral Council (CNE) certified he won the presidential election. Senior Biden administration officials on Monday said Venezuelan election authorities must release the “detailed precinct level results” from the election.

CNN —Venezuelans headed to the polls on Sunday to vote in a highly consequential presidential election where the country’s longtime strongman, Nicolas Maduro, will face one of his greatest political challenges yet, say analysts. Of the nine other candidates running for the presidency, his biggest challenger is a unified opposition movement that overcame their divisions to form a coalition known as the Democratic Unitary Platform. The opposition movement has maintained its momentum despite sustained government repression, in which their first-choice candidate, María Corina Machado, was disqualified from running. The government has also created significant impediments for the millions of Venezuelans abroad to vote, including widely unattainable passport and residency requirements. But several international election observers have announced this week that they will no longer travel to Venezuela to monitor the vote.

Why do women’s haircuts cost more than men’s?
  + stars: | 2024-07-27 | by ( Anna Cooban | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Last year, the average cost for a standard women’s haircut was $51.71 compared with $34.56 for a men’s haircut across the United States, according to transaction data provided exclusively to CNN by Square, a payment systems provider. A man gets his hair cut in a barber shop in Colchester, United Kingdom. That report found the average cost of a women’s haircut ranging between $45 and $75 across the country, while men’s toggled between $25 and $50, though it did not specify whether the typical women’s haircut included extra services such as a blow dry. “When you go to cosmetology school to become a hair stylist, you learn to how to cut hair,” they told CNN. The Biden administration is pausing student loan payments for eight million borrowers enrolled in its new repayment plan, known as SAVE, after a federal appellate court issued a ruling temporarily blocking the program. “Borrowers enrolled in the SAVE plan will be placed in an interest-free forbearance while our administration continues to vigorously defend the SAVE plan in court,” Miguel Cardona, the secretary of education, said in a statement. “The Department will be providing regular updates to borrowers affected by these rulings in the coming days.”For now, borrowers are unable to apply to the SAVE repayment plan, and applications for other income-driven repayment plans are also unavailable. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eight Circuit, based in St. Louis, granted a request by Missouri and other Republican-led states for an administrative stay, which prevents the Biden administration from “implementing or acting pursuant” to the rule that created the SAVE program last summer, according to the court filing.

Amateur buildEngineer Ashok Aliseril spent 18 months building a four-seater plane during the pandemic, helped by his daughter. Aliseril briefly considered buying an older aircraft, and looked at some that had been built in the 1960s and 1970s. After researching self-assembly aircraft kits, he came across a four-seater plane manufactured by South African company Sling Aircraft that ticked all the right boxes. “I would say generally, anyone can get involved in these sorts of builds.”Lockdown projectHe built a shed in his garden to complete the build. Although he’d initially planned to hire a workshop to construct the aircraft, Aliseril feels that creating a workspace at his home was the better choice.

Most colleges provide a list of things that new students might bring if they’re living on campus, and most big-box stores stock all of it and then some. Kathmandu, Nepal — A Nepali court sentenced a man who thousands believed was a reincarnation of the Buddha to 10 years in jail on Monday for child sexual abuse, a court official said. As a teenager, Ram Bahadur Bamjon had drawn international attention when in 2005 tens of thousands of people turned up to see the “Buddha Boy” sitting cross-legged under a tree in a dense forest in southeastern Nepal for nearly 10 months. Court official Sikinder Kaapar of the Sarlahi district court in southern Nepal said a judge had also ordered Bamjon, 33, to pay $3,750 in compensation to the victim. Bamjon could not be reached for comment by Reuters, but his lawyer, Dilip Kumar Jha, said he would appeal in a higher court. Bamjon was arrested at a house on the outskirts of Kathmandu in January.

CNN —President Joe Biden and Benjamin Netanyahu are expected to meet in Washington, DC, in several weeks when the Israeli prime minister visits to address Congress on July 24, a source familiar told CNN. US and Israeli officials are still in the process of nailing down logistical details for the Biden-Netanyahu meeting, which would likely take place at the White House, the source said. A White House official told CNN that Biden has known Netanyahu for decades, and that “they will likely see each other when the Prime Minister is here over the course of that week. But we have nothing to announce at this time.”CNN has also reached out to the prime minister’s office for comment. Last month, Biden said in an interview that Netanyahu may be dragging out the war in an attempt to cling to power and said it was “uncertain” whether Israel had committed war crimes.

Major components of President Biden’s student loan repayment plan can continue to operate as lawsuits challenging it wind through the legal system, a federal appellate court ruled on Sunday. That frees the administration to cut certain borrowers’ payments by as much as half, a benefit that had been previously scheduled but blocked. The order, from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit in Denver, is the latest twist in a saga that began to unfold last week after two federal judges temporarily suspended parts of the plan known as SAVE. That program, which has about eight million enrollees, ties borrowers’ monthly payment amounts to their income and household size. The judge in Missouri blocked new debt cancellation through the SAVE program, though legal experts initially said it wasn’t clear how widely that ruling should be interpreted.
