April 19 (Reuters) - Lawyers for Tyre Nichols' family filed a lawsuit on Wednesday in federal court seeking damages from those responsible for the beating death of the 29-year-old Black man at the hands of Memphis police. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said in a tweet that the lawsuit would seek to hold the Tennessee city, the Memphis Police Department and individual officers accountable for Nichols' death in January. Nichols' death on Jan. 10 came three days after his beating by police during a traffic stop and triggered a nationwide outcry and protests, leading to the arrest and indictment for second-degree murder of five police officers. Police and fire department responders left a mortally wounded Nichols on the ground, his hands cuffed behind his back, and intermittently propped him against a patrol car. Besides seeking damages for wrongful death, Crump's legal team is also suing Memphis police for intentional infliction of emotional distress for lying to his mother.

Tesla driver Dave Key continues to use Autopilot even after he got into an accident with it, The New York Times reported. The 69-year-old crashed into a police car while using Autopilot in 2018. The Tesla driver said he had a "false sense of security" during the incident and was distracted by the scenery. Key isn't the only Tesla driver to report issues with the software but continue to support Elon Musk's vision for the company. Insider previously reported that a Tesla driver took a 6,392 mile road trip primarily using Autopilot and FSD and continues to view the program as a "lifesaver" despite encountering bugs in the software.

Debris from a Russian anti-satellite weapons test threatened to collide with the International Space Station. The International Space Station regularly conducts avoidance maneuvers to dodge such debris. In November 2021, Russia conducted an anti-satellite weapons test which destroyed the Soviet-era Cosmos 1408 satellite and launched more than 1,500 pieces of debris through space. The ISS conducts such avoidance maneuvers to swerve around space debris on a fairly regular basis, including incidents in November and December of last year. Last year an unknown piece of debris struck the robotic arm of the space station, puncturing a hole through it.
