Bangkok CNN —A Canadian man has been arrested in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai after he allegedly opened the door on a commercial plane and triggered the evacuation slide prior to takeoff. According to a statement issued by the Chiang Mai International Airport, the incident took place on the night of February 7. The Airbus A320 was unable to be immediately moved, temporarily preventing other flights from taking off and landing, said the statement. Chiang Mai officials say 2,295 passengers were affected by the February 7 incident. Police said they were unaware of the suspect’s motive for opening the door, but noted he appeared stressed and was difficult to communicate with.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A man awaiting extradition on a Massachusetts warrant alleging he killed his girlfriend and left her body in a car at a Boston airport escaped from police custody in Kenya, police said Thursday. Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangethe slipped out of the police station and jumped into one of the privately owned minivans that are the main transportation source in Kenya, Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei said. Massachusetts State Police said in early November that Kangethe had left her body in a car at Logan International Airport and boarded a flight to Kenya. The court approved a police application for him to be detained for 30 days while the extradition issue was heard. On Feb. 2, prosecutor Vincent Monda asked the court to endorse the U.S. warrant for Kangethe's arrest and issue directions for the extradition proceedings.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, an unwavering voice of moderate conservatism and the first woman to serve on the nation’s highest court, died Friday. When she retired, Justice Clarence Thomas, a consistent conservative, called her “an outstanding colleague, civil in dissent and gracious when in the majority.”She could, nonetheless, express her views tartly. “I had never expected or aspired to be a Supreme Court justice," she said. The retired justice was relieved that he was comfortable and happy at the center, according to her son, Scott. “It has been a great privilege indeed to have served as a member of the court for 24 terms,” the justice wrote.

CNN —The shooting of three Palestinian college students in Vermont has prompted calls for the suspect to be charged with a hate crime. “When you add a hate crime enhancement that changes things,” George said at a news conference Monday. Crimes based on gender identity accounted for 4% of hate crimes, 1.5% were based on disability and less than 1% on gender. The Justice Department began prosecuting federal hate crime cases after the Civil Rights Act of 1968 was signed into law. Their murders shocked the nation and later moved Congress to pass a new hate crimes statute.

The young men told relatives that they were talking in a mixture of English and Arabic before the gunman shot them, according to a family spokeswoman. Relatives said they feared that the young men were targeted for being Arab Americans. The suspect answered the door, “stepped toward them with his palms up,” Mr. Murad said, and told the agents, “I’ve been waiting for you.”When the agents asked him why, Mr. Eaton requested a lawyer. Lewiston, Maine CNN —The signs were there: hearing voices, expressing paranoid thoughts and making threats so violent, extra patrols were sent to guard a military installation. Instead, law enforcement relied on the gunman’s family to keep guns from him after they tried without success to talk to the reservist. Sheriff Joel Merry told CNN on Saturday law enforcement officers weren’t able to make contact with Card during two visits. The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office sent an alert to other law enforcement agencies saying they were trying to locate Card. The fact law enforcement in Maine didn’t utilize the yellow flag law in Card’s case could point to its shortcomings, Rocque said.

Robert Card, the suspect in the worst mass shooting in the U.S. this year, was found Friday dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in the third trailer that police searched on the lot. He had two firearms with him, in addition to the long gun he had left behind in a white Subaru station wagon. Police didn’t say what types of guns were found with his body. All of the guns were purchased by Card legally, authorities said.

Law enforcement officials say Card, a US Army reservist and certified firearms instructor, had extensive training that included land navigation and firearms. Law enforcement prepare for a search for a gunman who killed 18 people two days ago, in Lewiston, Maine, on Friday. A law enforcement official said Friday that investigators have also recovered a cell phone that belonged to the suspect. The encounters happened 10 days after Card purchased the high-powered rifle at a Maine gun store, law enforcement sources said. The search for Robert Card, 40, of Bowdoin, involved both old-fashioned footwork and advanced technology, but for almost two days after the shooting there was still no sign of Card by air, water or land. It was called a “yellow flag” law, different from the “red flag” laws cropping up in other states to seize weapons from gun owners viewed as a threat. At a minimum, the Maine Gun Safety Coalition wants the state to ban assault weapons to prevent more mass shootings, said Cam Shannon, the group's chair. Wednesday night's mass shooting is especially difficult to stomach considering the recent failures to strengthen Maine’s gun laws, said Lynn Ellis of the Maine Gun Safety Coalition. The yellow flag law had the support of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, which was instrumental in writing it and viewed other states' red flag laws as unconstitutional. It wasn't clear whether the yellow flag law should have stopped the suspect in the Lewiston shootings or where he got the gun he used.

Emerson was accused of trying to shut off a plane's engines mid-flight. “The officer and Emerson talked about the use of psychedelic mushrooms and Emerson said it was his first-time taking mushrooms,” the affidavit says. CNN —An off-duty pilot who was riding in the cockpit of an Alaska Airlines flight en route to San Francisco on Sunday is facing dozens of attempted murder charges after he tried to shut down the plane’s engines mid-flight, authorities say. “The fire suppression system consists of a T-handle for each engine; when pulled, a valve in the wing closes to shut off fuel to the engine,” Alaska Airlines said in a statement to CNN. The flight crew detained the suspect and the plane was diverted to Portland International Airport, the Port of Portland said in a statement. After Alaska Airlines acquired Virgin America in 2016, Emerson became a first officer with Alaska and worked about three more years to become a pilot for the airline, according to the airline statement. “Throughout his career, Emerson completed his mandated FAA medical certifications in accordance with regulatory requirements, and at no point were his certifications denied, suspended or revoked,” Alaska Airlines said in a statement.

It has since emerged that the attacker had been ordered to leave Belgium in 2021. Bernard Clerfayt, a Brussels minister who is also the mayor of the Brussels borough where the killings took place, called for de Moor's resignation. ARRAS, France (AP) — France will mobilize up to 7,000 soldiers to increase security around the country after a teacher was fatally stabbed and three other people wounded in a school attack by a former student suspected of Islamic radicalization, the president’s office said Saturday. Counterterrorism authorities are investigating the stabbing, and the suspected assailant and several others are in custody, prosecutors said. The suspect is a Chechen who had attended the school and had been under recent surveillance by intelligence services for radicalization. The “Attack Emergency” threat posture allows the government to temporarily mobilize the military to protect public places among other measures. For many in France, the attack echoed the killing of another teacher, Samuel Paty, almost exactly three years ago near his Paris area school.
