A SpaceX capsule carrying four private citizens splashed down off the coast of Florida before dawn 3:36 a.m. The five-day Polaris Dawn flight marked the fifth private mission for SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule. This meant that all four members of the Polaris Dawn mission wore spacesuits during the spacewalk, and the entire capsule was depressurized to vacuum conditions. He was part of the first all-civilian SpaceX mission to orbit in 2021 and funded the Polaris Dawn mission, his second spaceflight, for an undisclosed sum. The Crew Dragon capsule carrying four astronauts is on track to land off the coast of Dry Tortugas, Florida, at 3:36 a.m. Already, the Polaris Dawn mission has made history as it reached a higher altitude than any human has traveled in five decades. To safely reach home, the Crew Dragon capsule will carry out what’s called a “de-orbit burn,” orienting itself as it prepares to slice through the thickest part of Earth’s atmosphere. Polaris Dawn crew member and SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis emerges from the Crew Dragon capsule's hatch on Thursday during the first commercial spacewalk. Sunday’s anticipated return will mark the conclusion of the third trip to space for the specific Crew Dragon capsule powering the Polaris Dawn mission.

Read previewSpaceX's Polaris Dawn crew successfully returned to Earth on Sunday, bringing Elon Musk one step closer to his dream of settling Mars. They donned new SpaceX spacesuits that had never been tested in orbit, opened their ship to the vacuum of space, and conducted the first-ever commercial spacewalk. On top of that, they exposed themselves to high levels of space radiation, much higher than what astronauts aboard the International Space Station undergo in the same time period. People traveling to Mars would be exposed to immense amounts of space radiation for months. So the Crew Dragon spacecraft flew through two donuts of intense radiation surrounding Earth, called the Van Allen belts.

CNN —SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn crew is beginning its fifth day in orbit, having marked a few record-setting milestones on a historic journey — including the world’s first commercial spacewalk. Polaris Dawn crew member and SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis emerges from the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule during the first commercial spacewalk on Thursday. The Polaris Dawn mission's Crew Dragon capsule is seen Wednesday 870 miles (1,400 kilometers) above Earth — the farthest humans have traveled since the Apollo program over 50 years ago. The riskiest part of the journey may be over, but the Polaris Dawn crew still has a key milestone ahead: coming home. What this Boeing strike is really all about
  + stars: | 2024-09-14 | by ( Allison Morrow | Chris Isidore | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
New York CNN —At the heart of the Boeing strike that began Friday is a story about what happens when penny-pinching executives lose the plot and it falls to workers to get everyone back on track. If Boeing were any other business — and not a too-big-fail half of a global duopoly — it almost certainly would have declared bankruptcy. Years of pent-up resentment over Boeing’s mismanagement, combined with pandemic-era inflation and a resurgent labor movement, made this strike inevitable. Ahead of the strike, Ortberg urged workers not to strike while acknowledging their anger over nearly two decades of past contracts that downsized their retirement and health care benefits. Almost exactly one year ago, the United Auto Workers union won historic guarantees from the Big Three automakers after a seven-week strike.

Billionaire Jared Isaacman made history in space — again. On Thursday, Isaacman spent 10 minutes floating in the vacuum of space outside of a SpaceX capsule. Both private space missions were funded for undisclosed sums by Isaacman, who boasts an estimated net worth of $1.9 billion, according to Forbes. He's a longtime advocate for the expansion of the private space industry, which he says could lead to "a world where everybody can go and venture among the stars." We could have gotten to the point, I believe, where we could have returned on Starliner,” he said. During an August 24 news briefing, NASA officials also indicated that Boeing disagreed with some of the space agency’s risk assessments. There was “just a little disagreement (between NASA and Boeing) in terms of the level of risk,” NASA’s Commercial Crew Program manager Steve Stich said. …And when you do things with spacecraft that have never been done before, just like Starliner, you’re going to find some things,” he added. “In this case, we found some things that we just could not get comfortable with putting us back in the Starliner.”

Brazil's supreme court announced Friday that it ordered banks to transfer funds from Starlink and X accounts to pay fines the court levied against Elon Musk's social network. Following the transfers, the court ordered that the frozen bank accounts and assets of X and Starlink be released, saying there was no longer any need to keep them. The court suspended X at the end of August, and the suspension remains in place. On Sept. 5, his long-time collaborator at the helm of SpaceX, COO Gwynne Shotwell, also took shots at the Brazil supreme court online. Backers of de Moraes and the STF have seen the orders against X Corp. as an assertion of Brazilian sovereignty.

And when that happens, he’s got another project, Worldcoin, in the works to help fix it. To do that, it’s using its proprietary, basketball-ball sized “orbs” that scan people’s eyeballs and create a unique, immutable code based on the pattern of their irises. So I sat down (virtually) with Worldcoin’s co-founder and CEO, 30-year-old Alex Blania, to discuss the project’s origins and future. Aytug Can Sencar | Anadolu | Getty ImagesLONDON — The U.K. government has had "constructive" talks with Elon Musk's social media site X over the spread of misinformation and other harmful content, technology minister Peter Kyle told CNBC Friday. Multiple social media users at the time spread false information about the alleged perpetrator, who has since been charged with murder and attempted murder, claiming he was an asylum seeker. The minister also told CNBC he is assessing whether he needs additional powers to regulate social media companies over the dissemination of harmful content online. A government spokesperson told CNBC earlier this year that its "immediate focus is getting the Online Safety Act implemented quickly and effectively." However, this spokesperson added, "our message to social media companies remains clear: There is no need to wait — you can and should take immediate action to protect your users."

The Summary Boeing officials have made few public comments about the company's Starliner spacecraft over the last six weeks. Just over an hour after Boeing’s Starliner capsule made its uncrewed return to Earth, NASA convened a standard post-landing briefing to discuss the end of the tumultuous test flight. The capsule’s first crewed test flight, the mission was expected to last around eight days. The pair is scheduled to stay at the space station until February then return with members of an upcoming ISS crew. In 2019, an uncrewed test flight to the space station was cut short because of technical glitches and the company was forced to repeat it in 2022.

SpaceX pulled off its first spacewalk in the early hours of Thursday morning, in a historic first for a company. The marquee event of the private Polaris Dawn mission went smoothly, with two of the crew members — Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis — stepping outside of SpaceX's Dragon capsule "Resilience." It's the first time civilians, and not government astronauts, have performed a spacewalk. The spacewalk, otherwise known as an extravehicular activity, or EVA, is seen by SpaceX as a crucial milestone in its goal of sending people to other planets. The mission is also the first to fly employees of the company, represented by mission specialist Gillis and medical officer Anna Menon.
