A staff wanted sign in the window of a restaurant in the Soho district of London, U.K., on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021. LONDON — U.K. unemployment unexpectedly rose to its highest level in two and a half years, data showed Tuesday, amid a heated general election campaign in which the economy is a key battleground. Simultaneous strong wage growth divided opinions from market-watchers mulling the timing of an interest rate cut from the Bank of England. While market pricing on Tuesday suggested next to no chance of a rate cut at the BOE's June meeting, and a 36% shot in August, that probability rises to nearly 60% for the September deliberations. Consultancy Capital Economics said that, while the stickiness of wage growth would be a "lingering concern" for the BOE, the rate should soon be on a "firm downward path" as unemployment rises.

What Did Jenna Lyons Sell at Her Stoop Sale?
  + stars: | 2024-06-05 | by ( Anna Kodé | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
On the third floor of a building in SoHo, Jenna Lyons sat frantically scrubbing a pair of Lanvin shoes. “When I moved to Brooklyn, that was the first time I’d ever seen a stoop sale. The event ended up being a much larger, more stressful production than a typical New York stoop sale — and it didn’t take place on a stoop. Ms. Lyons had to institute a cover charge to help manage the crowd, and a “Real Housewives” film crew was present asking visitors to sign waivers. At first, Ms. Lyons said she pushed back against the filming — “I was like ‘please no, I just want to have a sale.’”

The UK-based fashion brand Me+Em has become a royal favorite in recent years. Kate Middleton has reworn a pink dress from Me+Em to royal engagements, and Meghan Markle sported a jacket from the brand in 2020. Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, was even spotted wearing the same Me+Em dress Queen Camilla owns in 2023, as Hello! Samantha Grindell/Business InsiderThe mirror was huge, and the lighting was built into the walls to save space. After seeing the Me+Em store and its clothes, I understood why it had charmed the royals.

“Job,” a two-character thriller about a psychological evaluation going awry, started small, with a run last year at SoHo Playhouse. Word-of-mouth was good, the New York Times review was positive and sales were strong, so early this year it transferred for another Off Broadway run at the Connelly Theater in the East Village. Now the play, written by Max Wolf Friedlich and directed by Michael Herwitz, is planning to make the leap to Broadway, with a two-month run beginning this summer at the Hayes Theater. The Broadway production, like the Off Broadway runs, will star Peter Friedman and Sydney Lemmon. Both of them appeared in the HBO series “Succession” — Friedman was a member of the principal cast, playing Frank Vernon, the chief operating officer of Waystar Royco, and Lemmon appeared in the show at one point as a love interest of Kendall Roy.

Neighborhood names are also shorthand for your rent or mortgage payments. In 2017, real-estate brokers in the historically Black New York neighborhood of Harlem sparked backlash when they tried to rebrand its south end as SoHa. At their best, new neighborhood names bring people together over a shared sense of pride in their little corner of the world. Along the way, these neighborhood names have veered into parody territory. I'm not saying that neighborhood names should be set in stone — in fact, I think it's natural for them to evolve alongside their populations.

It was the first New York City home they owned, shortly after the breakup of the Beatles. In the fall of 1971 — two years before moving to the famed Dakota apartment house on the Upper West Side — John Lennon and Yoko Ono had settled downtown, buying a petite loft-style building at 496 Broome Street in SoHo. At the time, Lennon had just released his second solo studio album, “Imagine.”Upon relocating to New York, Lennon began forging his own identity with Ms. Ono, an avant-garde artist, musician and peace activist, while publicly distancing himself from his former bandmate Paul McCartney, with whom he had created some of the 20th century’s most popular songs.

In a country roiled by recession worries, those at the top of New York City — for better or worse — couldn't give a single gilded shit. On Friday, the head of the exclusive hotel and social club chain Soho House said the company saw a record rise in non-alcoholic drink sales during this year's Dry January. "What we also saw in January was a much bigger spike in non-alcoholic beverage consumption, much more than we've ever seen before," said Andrew Carnie, the chief executive officer of Soho House, on the company's earnings call. The Soho House brand has long prided itself on being associated with all things cool and en vogue — and the low-to-no booze trend is no exception. Millennials are the most interested in non-alcoholic drinks, compared with older and younger peers, per ISWR. UK bar revenues in January were down 11.5% compared with the same period in 2023, according to market researcher CGA.
