The share of US homes without a mortgage jumped five percentage points from 2012 to 2022 to a record near 40%, Bloomberg reported. Historically high mortgage rates and home prices have kept many Americans sidelined from the market. The share of homeowners that are mortgage-free surged 5% between 2012 and 2022, Bloomberg reported Friday, citing data from the Census Bureau, hitting a new record just below 40%. Construction is booming in these states, and the share of mortgage-free homes is high. West Virginia, meanwhile, has the largest share of mortgage-free homes, at about 53%, Bloomberg reported.

The UK's AI safety summit kicks off on Wednesday. Several groups have criticized the UK government's focus on the existential risks of AI. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe UK's AI safety summit kicked off on Wednesday, but the event is already surrounded by criticism. Hickok is not the only one to raise concerns about the current rhetoric around AI safety. "The UK should not let the AI safety agenda displace the AI fairness agenda," she said.

Many are shrugging off the supposed existential risks of AI, labeling them a distraction. They argue big tech companies are using the fears to protect their own interests. The timing of the pushback, ahead of the UK's AI safety summit and following Biden's recent executive order on AI, is also significant. More experts are warning that governments' preoccupation with the existential risks of AI is taking priority over the more immediate threats. Merve Hickok, the president of the Center for AI and Digital Policy, raised similar concerns about the UK AI safety summit's emphasis on existential risk.

The less-ambitious approach fit with Biden's determination to pivot his foreign-policy focus from Middle East hotspots to China. Arab leaders “are very aware this is going to keep blowing up. Then, Hamas's breakout from Gaza shattered what National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan had hailed as a period of Middle East calm. Brokering those alliances would stabilize the Middle East in themselves, no Israeli-Palestinian peace accord needed, supporters have argued. The nightmare unfolding now for Israeli and Palestinian civilians argues differently, when it comes to Biden's approach, critics say.

The Palestinian issue, he said, is brought up “a lot less than you think” in negotiations with Arab states. “The international community no longer seems to care, and the Palestinians’ Arab allies are embracing the most right-wing government in Israeli history. With the introduction of new laws, such as the CHIPS and Science Act and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the Biden administration has been betting big on industrial policies to bring manufacturers back to the United States. This isn't the first time the U.S. government has spent tax dollars to guide industrial policy. If successful, industrial policies can potentially lead to big payoffs. "An example would be the development of mRNA vaccines for Covid," said Ed Gresser, vice president and director for trade and global markets at the Progressive Policy Institute. Less ethical US foreign policy requires new logic
  + stars: | 2023-09-18 | by ( Hugo Dixon | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and rising tensions with China are now driving U.S. foreign policy, and ethical considerations have taken a back seat. Even so, groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch are concerned. But the United States considers all to have poor records when judged against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. While it may make sense for the United States to choose the lesser evil, it is now unclear what role human rights play in American foreign policy. Although he didn’t connect this idea to human rights, that seems to be part of the thinking.

Billionaire and Citadel CEO Ken Griffin, a major Republican donor, says he is sitting on the sidelines of the GOP presidential primary and not supporting Florida Gov. "I'm still on the sidelines as to who to support in this election cycle," Griffin said. "Look, if I had my dream, we'd have a great Republican candidate in the primary who was younger, of a different generation, with a different tone for America. Griffin gave $5 million in 2021 to a political action committee backing DeSantis' successful reelection bid, according to state campaign finance records. His sidelining in the GOP primary means, at least for now, one of the party's biggest contributors will not be putting his considerable financial resources toward a candidate challenging Trump's enormous advantage.

Former President Donald Trump won't have his day in court in October a Georgia judge ruled Thursday, saying the high-profile defendant could sever his case from two co-defendants who want to move more quickly. Trial for two defendants – lawyers Kenneth Chesebro and Sidney Powell – will go ahead as scheduled Oct. 23. Those two invoked their right to a speedy trial, but other defendants have not yet done so. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis argued in a filing Tuesday night to try all 19 defendants at once. Several of the defendants, including Chesebro, Powell, former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, want to be tried separately.

U.S. President Joe Biden attends a meeting with Vietnam's Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, at the Communist Party of Vietnam Headquarters in Hanoi, Vietnam, September 10, 2023. But Washington's elevation to the same tier as Beijing in Vietnam's ranking will inevitably have an impact on China. The White House had no new arms deals to announce, but the new ties may facilitate future supplies from the U.S. or its partners. That would inevitably reduce Vietnam's reliance on Russian gear, although Hanoi is currently negotiating a new possible arms deal with Moscow. "We do not have any comment on a decision that does not involve Airbus," an Airbus spokesperson said.

But for rights advocates, Biden's travels were a disappointment, given his administration's vow to prioritize human rights when taking office in 2021. The White House also unveiled a Vietnam Airlines purchase of 50 Boeing 737 Max jets worth $7.8 billion. Rights advocates fear a lack of focus on human rights, while not unexpected, will not only fail to improve conditions in Vietnam and India, but risk worsening them elsewhere. Reporters asked Biden in Vietnam if he was putting U.S. strategic interests above rights and replied: "I’ve raised it (human rights) with every person I met with." "As such, the Biden administration has tended to downplay or avoid human rights discussions," he said.

How Xi Returned China to One-Man Rule

Like his predecessors, Xi wields power through his control of the Communist Party, the military and the government. One-Man Party Xi overturned term limits, erased factions and installed loyalists to establish sweeping control of the Communist Party. When Xi first took power in 2012, few in the Politburo Standing Committee, the most powerful group in China, had close ties with him. Party leaders often set broad policy, and government ministries and agencies refined and implemented their goals, sending feedback to the leaders. An appeals court in Pakistan suspended former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s three-year prison sentence on Tuesday, the latest twist in a political showdown between Mr. Khan and leaders of the powerful military establishment who appear intent on sidelining him from politics. Mr. Khan had been arrested earlier this month after a trial court gave him the three-year term in a corruption case — a sentence that the Islamabad High Court suspended on Tuesday after an appeal by Mr. Khan’s legal team. It was not immediately clear on what grounds the court had suspended the sentence, or whether he would be promptly released from prison. The possibility that Mr. Khan could remain behind bars or be rearrested after he is released looms over him. He faces dozens of court cases, part of what he and his allies have characterized as a coordinated effort by the military to keep him out of politics.

The sharp rebound in groundbreaking on single-family housing units reported by the Commerce Department on Wednesday was another sign of the economy continuing to defy dire forecasts of a recession. Single-family housing starts, which account for the bulk of homebuilding, jumped 6.7% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 983,000 units last month. The increase in groundbreaking was led by the West, where single-family starts soared 28.5%. Overall housing starts increased 3.9% to a rate of 1.452 million units in July. The national average for regular gasoline hit $3.85 a gallon on Monday, according to AAA. That’s the highest level since October 19 and comes just weeks ahead of Labor Day weekend when millions of Americans will hit the roads. The summer spike in gas prices has eased, with the cost to drivers moving just gradually higher more recently. The national average is up by two cents over the past week. Those year-over-year savings have nearly vanished, with the national average down just 11 cents from this point last summer.

In his first address following the July 26 coup, Tiani said he had ousted the president for the good of the country. But in recent months, Bazoum had curtailed the size of the presidential guard, which was about 700-strong at the time of the coup, and started to scrutinize its budget.
