(AP) — Alabama five-star freshman quarterback Julian Sayin has entered the transfer portal, the program's latest player to look elsewhere after Kalen DeBoer replaced the retired Nick Saban as coach. Sayin had signed with the Crimson Tide this past December. He's the 26th player and second signee to leave Alabama since Saban announced he was leaving earlier this month. Burns fired a career-low 61 on Friday to take a one-shot lead over Michael Kim and a two-shot lead on Dunlap at The American Express. Ohio State is hiring former Houston Texans and Penn State head coach Bill O'Brien as its offensive coordinator, a person with direct knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Thursday night. ESPN first reported Ohio State was hiring O'Brien. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day has been Ohio State's primary play-caller since being promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach in 2019 to replace Urban Meyer. Brian Hartline was offensive coordinator for the Buckeyes last year, and will remain on staff as wide receivers coach. O'Brien returned to college after being fired by the Texans, joining Nick Saban's staff at Alabama as offensive coordinator for two years.

Washington has targeted Arizona's Jedd Fisch and is negotiating a deal with him to succeed Kalen DeBoer as the next coach of the Huskies, according to a person with knowledge of the talks. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Arizona and Fisch were not making any public announcements yet. Less than a week after playing for the national championship, the Huskies moved quickly to fill the vacancy created when DeBoer left for Alabama. Arizona is moving to the Big 12 starting next season but is facing financial issues within its athletic department, and Fisch could see more stability at Washington. Fisch, 47, would be the fourth head coach at Washington since the 2019 season.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Top-seeded Michigan will face Southeastern Conference champion Alabama in the College Football Playoff semifinal to be played as the 110th edition of the Rose Bowl Game. The Wolverines will be playing in their 21st Rose Bowl, more than any school except USC, but Michigan hasn't been to the Granddaddy of Them All since 2007. Michigan's fans hope the Rose Bowl berth is the penultimate step in a tumultuous season featuring incredible play, but also two suspensions for Harbaugh. Alabama returned to the CFP and earned its eighth appearance in the Rose Bowl by ending the Bulldogs' 29-game winning streak. Alabama's previous Rose Bowl Game appearance was in 1946, although Nick Saban's Crimson Tide also won the national championship at the Rose Bowl in January 2010 when they beat Texas in the BCS title game.

This is the college football season when some very un-Alabama things happened to Alabama. It started when the Crimson Tide lost a game in September. Things got worse when they rotated through three quarterbacks before finally naming a starter. They needed a second-half comeback to squeak past South Florida and then a miracle to win the Iron Bowl. The whole thing was deeply weird and unsettling, like Nick Saban cracking a smile.

Carson Beck and Jalen Milroe had to replace big-name quarterbacks at programs with national title-or-bust expectations.
