Key lines from CNN’s presidential debate

CNN —In CNN’s presidential debate, President Joe Biden was halting and, at times, trailed off and confused words, feeding a nagging narrative about his fitness for the presidency. Trump said Biden couldn’t drive a golf ball 50 yards, and Biden challenged Trump to a golf match but only if Trump carries his own clubs. We’ve got to take a look at what I was left when I became president, what Mr. Trump left me. -TrumpBiden said Trump deserves blame for watching the riot at the Capitol unfold for hours without doing anything to intervene. They’ve had meetings and they voted who’s the worst president in American history.

For example, a call that the S & P 500 would rise 100 points on a positive consumer price index print came true last year. That's true so far, with the S & P 500 jumping 4.8% in May after finishing April down 4.2%. As equities struggled, (the S & P 500 fell almost 20% in 2022), Lee felt like the risk of inflation was being mispriced. Because of that, he foresaw a rebound in 2023, a year that sent the S & P 500 more than 24% higher. "There was a pretty widely-held view that the Fed had to crash the economy in order to contain inflation," Lee said.

That means you're likely to continue spending and saving and investing the way you always have, even if an overhaul help you get closer to reaching your financial goals. 'Make it tougher' to spend money and easier to saveYou know you have to put some money away to use later. This applies to short-term goals, such as building an emergency fund, and longer-term ones, such as retirement. If I can automate my retirement saving, I'm not even having to make a decision about that money. "With yields holding firm at elevated levels , large caps continue to outperform small caps. Hopes for multiple rate cuts from the Federal Reserve this year have dimmed after recent inflation readings showed signs of stickiness. An economy that is growing more slowly, but with cooler inflation, could be the combination small caps need. Small caps could also benefit from an uptick in the global economy that benefits areas like manufacturing that has heavy representation in the small-cap index. Can the Russian military can be reformed to better achieve Putin's revanchist aims? Yes, but the drastic changes will not be easy, an expert on Russia's military says. AdvertisementWhatever the outcome of the Ukraine war, one thing seems certain: the Russian military needs drastic changes. Indeed, Russia's tendency to seek top-down structural reforms matched with enduring characteristics of the Russian military suggest that a transformation of the Russian military will be difficult." Given that observers so misjudged Russian military capabilities prior to the Ukraine war, how can the West accurately determine whether reforms are occurring?

This month's rout in smallcap stocks has erased the Russell 2000's sparkling first quarter gain, and the benchmark index for smaller shares could face further trouble ahead so long as interest rates are left unchanged. A hotter-than-expected March inflation report on Wednesday pushed investors on Wall Street to extend out expectations for the Federal Reserve's first interest rate cut to September from June, according to the CME Group's FedWatch tool . The Fed's last interest rate increase in the current cycle was in July, 2023. Servicing debt Hall specifies that the risk to smallcaps is tied to the effect of higher interest rates on refinancing needs. "Higher for longer [interest rates have] generally been good for small cap stocks.

The idea involves slashing the corporate bureaucracy, giving employees more control, and, hopefully, as a result, allowing the company to innovate efficiently. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. "We hire highly educated, trained people, and then we put them in these environments with rules and procedures and eight layers of hierarchy," Anderson said in an interview with Business Insider earlier this year. In a traditional corporate setting, the organizational chart flows upward: Lower-level employees have managers, those managers have managers, and so on until the top of the chain. In comes a key part of Anderson's proposal: Cut a big chunk of the middle managers and let employees choose the projects they want to pursue.

Gold just jumped to a record high. Here’s why

New York CNN —Gold rose Tuesday after notching a record high the prior day, as investors continue to bet the Federal Reserve will cut rates in the back half of the year. The yellow metal was up about 0.4% on Tuesday morning, stabilizing somewhat after settling at an all-time high of $2,126.30 a troy ounce on Monday. However, some investors also believe gold to be a hedge against inflation, wagering that it will hold its value even if it begins to surge. The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, rose 2.4% for the 12 months ended in January. The milestones for both bitcoin and gold come as stocks continue to rally powerfully.

CHANGE, by Édouard Louis. Édouard Louis (né Eddy Bellegueule) burst onto the French literary scene in 2014 at the age of 21 with “The End of Eddy,” an autobiographical novel that announced, with aplomb, his own abnegation. Raised in a rural village in northern France, Eddy grew up not only miserably poor, but miserably gay and miserably bright. But for readers of “The End of Eddy,” let alone the entire Louis canon, “Change” feels stuck in a familiar rut. “Need I tell you again how it all started?” Louis wonders near the beginning of “Change.” The answer, again, is yes.

It has been a tough year thus far for small-cap stocks, but Bank of America has some fresh ideas for finding value in the space. Despite a bounce this month, the Russell 2000 index of small-cap stocks has slipped a fraction this year while the large-cap S & P 500 has climbed almost 7%. Against that underperformance, Bank of America strategist Jill Carey Hall recently screened for small-cap value names with strong fundamentals. She scanned the Russell 2000 for profitable stocks that are in the top 20th percentile on one or more valuation metrics, including price-to-book, price-to-earnings and enterprise value-to-sales ratios. The stock placed within the top 20% of the Russell 2000 when looking at the enterprise value to sales ratio.

It’s first worth noting which countries have most dramatically increased their defense spending since the invasion of Ukraine. Yves Herman/ReutersTrump’s well-documented comments about NATO and European defense spending woke them up from that slumber. The example many point to is a deal struck earlier this year between multiple European countries to buy 1,000 Patriot missiles. “Pensions for soldiers are useful, sure, but they are not going to shoot a Russian,” a European security official told CNN. But it will be worth it, if countries don’t get bored and work together.

Sexual function — which includes factors like desire, arousal and pleasure — in men and women decreased significantly after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a January 2022 meta-analysis of 21 studies published in the journal BMC Public Health. And women — even more so than men — struggled when it came to desire. Many people, particularly women, tend to experience what is called responsive arousal as opposed to spontaneous arousal, she said. And the data showed that men were more likely than women to seek professional help for the sexual problems they experienced, he said. “Unfortunately, I think we’ve sort of normalized sexual difficulties for women,” he added.

Growing up, I was the opposite of a jock; I was an artsy kid with a limp wrist. But in my adult life, something shocking has happened: I've become one of the most athletic people I know. But what started as a casual interest in hiking and cycling has reached athletic proportions in recent years. I've since turned to cyclingWhat allowed me to claw out of that rut was, again to my surprise, an athletic activity: cycling.
