A spokesman for the New York City Police Department said on Tuesday morning that the woman’s condition was “serious but stable.” The woman is believed to have lost about 20 pounds of flesh because of the bite, according to the police report. Park officials described Monday’s shark attack as the first on Rockaway Beach “in recent memory.”There have been 20 unprovoked shark attacks in New York state since 1837, according to the Florida Museum’s International Shark Attack File, a database of all known shark attacks. But Monday’s shark bite marked the first confirmed attack in New York City since the 1950s, according to the Global Shark Attack File, an unofficial database of such encounters. The last documented shark attack in the city recorded in that database was in 1958, when a man was bitten by a harpooned shark after provoking it. “It’s not very common that we would see this,” said Gavin Naylor, the program director of the International Shark Attack File.

A New Jersey school district has agreed to pay $9.1 million to the parents of a sixth grader who died by suicide in 2017, ending a lawsuit that accused administrators of failing to take bullying complaints seriously. Dianne and Seth Grossman sued following the death of their daughter, Mallory, during her first year at Copeland Middle School in Rockaway Township. Mallory had been repeatedly bullied by other students in text and Snapchat messages, and although administrators were routinely contacted about the bullying, the school did not do enough to respond, according to the lawsuit. The factors that contribute to suicide are complex and varied, and the act is rarely attributable to any one thing. But the question of a school’s culpability in cases where administrators made missteps or took insufficient action has become the subject of court cases around the country.

Make Way for the Bike Bus

On a recent Wednesday morning in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, parents and children met up in McCarren Park with all manner of wheels: electric cargo bikes, scooters, tricycles, classic cruisers. Along the way, other families, tracking the group’s location, joined the slow-moving peloton, also known as the “bike bus.”The bike bus is an increasingly popular way to get to school. Gradually, it made its way stateside and to the Metropolitan area. Some fans have nicknamed the movement “kidical mass,” a play on a cycling event where groups spontaneously take over the streets. When Drury Thorp, a teacher at Watchung Elementary School in Montclair, N.J., read an article about a “bike bus” in Portland, Ore., she reached out to a local cycling group, and they charted a route.

Party City files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection

Jan 17 (Reuters) - Party City Holdco Inc (PRTY.N) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday, casting doubts on the retailer's future, as it grapples with dampening sales due to inflation and higher operating costs. The Rockaway, New Jersey-based party supplies retailer reported $1 billion to $10 billion of both estimated assets and liabilities, and said it had obtained $150 million in debtor-in-possession financing to support its operations. Party City subsidiaries outside of the U.S., its Party City franchise stores, and its Anagram business were not part of the bankruptcy proceedings, the company said. It expected restructuring to be completed in the second quarter of this year and said its stores would remain open while the company navigates through the bankruptcy process.
