I moved to Helsinki without ever visiting the country because I read that it was the happiest place on earth . Finnish people don't wear shoes in the officeWhile it's not unusual to take off your shoes before entering someone's house, most Finnish offices also have a no-shoe policy. Some offices will have "indoor shoes," but for the most part, colleagues will wear socks. Reindeer meat tasted good to me, very tender and rich earthy flavor. I see reindeer meat mostly sold in local markets throughout the city.

The problem with this approach is that most Republican voters do not want an alternative to Trump; they overwhelmingly back him. At least that’s what the Nikki Haley campaign said after finishing second to former President Donald Trump in the New Hampshire primaries on Tuesday. Democratic nominee Bill Clinton and third-party candidate Ross Perot exploited that division in the Republican Party against Bush in the fall. The Republican Party is united behind Trump, and with optimal conditions for an opponent like Haley, Trump was still unstoppable. “Democrats deserve options, and it’s not clear at all that President Biden can beat Donald Trump.

Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Jorge Reyes , a 27-year-old professional from Bogotá, Colombia, who moved to Finland less than a year ago. Finland was the opposite of my hometown in Bogotá, Colombia, and completely unlike my Caribbean background, where 40 degrees Celsius, beaches, and sunshine are the norm. I saw on social media that Finland was ranked one of the happiest countries in the world. Ironically, Colombia was up there on this list, but I felt I needed to experience Finland for myself. I'm sure smaller cities within Finland might not be as receptive to foreigners as the bigger cities, but they're becoming increasingly inclusive.

Authorities say Renteria’s lawyers did not raise this defense at his trial and evidence in the case shows that he committed the abduction and killing alone. Renteria’s lawyers argue they have been denied access to the prosecution’s file on Renteria, which they argued violates his constitutional rights. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals later overturned Reyes’ orders. On Tuesday, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles voted 7-0 against commuting Renteria’s death sentence to a lesser penalty. Renteria would be the eighth inmate in Texas to be put to death this year.

Marin Ireland Photo: IFC FilmsOne could never faultMary Shelley for a lack of imagination, just a lack of available technology: Her 1818 “Frankenstein” offers no pseudo-scientific explanation for its Creature’s reanimation, only some vague primal force harnessed by the book’s title character. It was the movies, beginning in 1931, that suggested electricity as a means of fusing humans out of spare parts. What is suggested by the remarkable “birth/rebirth” is how Shelley’s story—its mythos, at any rate—can itself be brought back to vibrant life, time after time, by torquing modern medicine into increasingly plausible horror. The Shelley blueprint—which locates the fear factor in every scientific leap that humans make as they inevitably play God—is always paved with good scientific intentions. Rose and Celie mean well.

That means the dilemma of the 21st century isn’t how Earth will feed an ever-growing population, but how the world will deal with a potential mass rebalancing of population via migration, an altered wealth-and-people equilibrium, in a world where technology is making the movement of peoples easier than ever. Clearly, the richest countries will be able to replenish their populations with immigration across the 21st century — if they choose. (A 25 percent ratio means there are four workers for every retiree; a 50 percent ratio, just two.) I don’t think you need to be especially pessimistic to regard that kind of transformation as incompatible with stable democratic governance. It’s among the reasons you already have the rightward shift in European politics and why immigration restriction will be a winning issue for the foreseeable future in many European countries.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

The prestigious global photo exhibition, on display in Hungary's National Museum in Budapest, receives more than 4 million visitors from around the world every year. Showcasing outstanding photojournalism, its mission is to bring visual coverage of a range of important events to a global audience. David Mitchell, a muckraker whose tiny California newspaper challenged the violent drug rehabilitation cult Synanon and, as a result, became one of only a handful of weeklies to win a Pulitzer Prize, died on Oct. 25 at his home in Point Reyes Station, Calif., in Marin County. His wife, Lynn Axelrod Mitchell, said the cause was complications of Parkinson’s disease. A gangly, grizzled former literature teacher, Mr. Mitchell also figured in a retaliatory libel suit by Synanon, the results of which advanced the rights of investigative reporters. In 1984, the California Supreme Court ruled that in certain cases they could keep the names of confidential sources secret without forfeiting their defense in libel and other civil cases. Mr. Mitchell’s newspaper, The Point Reyes Light, was struggling financially, and the strain of keeping it afloat ultimately cost Mr. Mitchell his second marriage; his wife at the time, Catherine Mitchell, was co-publisher with him.

Old World Young Africa As the world grays, Africa blooms with youth. The World Is Becoming More African Part one of a series on how the youth boom is changing the continent, and beyond. But while a handful of African countries are poised to ride the demographic wave, others risk being swamped by it. In the West, racists and right-wing nationalists stoke fears of African population growth to justify hatred, or even violence. The age gap between geriatric leaders and restless youth is “a major source of tension” in many African countries, said Simon Mulongo, a former African Union diplomat from Uganda.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams told reporters Thursday that police would do extra patrols in some city neighborhoods and send additional resources to schools and houses of worship. Kathy Hochul stressed that law enforcement wasn't aware of any credible threats against the state or the city. The Secure Community Network, which advises U.S. Jewish institutions on security, has encouraged Jewish communities to be vigilant and bolster their security efforts. Michael Masters, the group’s CEO, warned against letting “fear or clickbait threats cause chaos” in Jewish communities because he said that is part of the objective of those spreading hateful rhetoric online. ____ Associated Press reporters Jake Offenhartz, Deepti Hajela and Karen Matthews in New York City contributed.
