People are calling out overconsumption, and redefining what it means to be cool on social media. Social media users have long called out the consumerist culture fostered by social media, but recently a group of anti-heroes rose into the TikTok spotlight to battle this kind of overspending using their online platforms. It also reflects a marked change from the kind of aspirational content that people have historically associated with other social media platforms like Instagram. The fight against overconsumption perhaps indicates that creators are trying to redefine the standard of what it means to be cool. The glorification of overconsumption that defined social media may be on its way out.

Modestly scaled and tonally perfect, “Fallen Leaves” opens in a fluorescent hell-on-earth and ends with a vision of something like paradise. A lot of the drinks are downed hurriedly and often furtively by a man, while elsewhere a woman listens to sad songs. A Finnish writer-director best known on the international festival circuit (“Fallen Leaves” won a major award at the 2023 Cannes), Kaurismaki makes movies — precise, austere, plaintive — that resist compartmentalization. Set in contemporary Helsinki, “Fallen Leaves” opens on the woman who listens to sad songs; it’s a habit that suggests she’s a familiar genre type — she isn’t. China’s property boost has to sway wary banks

That didn’t work because lenders balked at increasing their exposure to over-leveraged real estate groups. Xi needs to articulate a broader plan to restore banks’ confidence in the troubled property sector. Beijing’s problem is that the cash it doles out may not reach the intended targets because banks are reluctant to pass it on to property developers. Chinese banks heeded the strong signal coming from Beijing. Still, simply throwing money at reluctant banks won’t help heal the current real estate wounds.

The recent earnings calls of the world's two largest memory chipmakers signaled that weak demand may have finally bottomed out. This followed a 85.15% drop in first quarter operating profit from the previous quarter and a small 4.68% improvement in second-quarter operating profit from the first quarter. Such memory chips are found in consumer devices such as laptops and smartphones. During the pandemic, companies stockpiled memory chips to meet record electronics demand, but were left with excess inventory when that pressure eased. Inflation has caused consumers to rein in spending and cut back on purchases of consumer devices, driving down demand and prices for memory chips.

"It's a good strong number and shows the economy is doing well," Yellen said at a Bloomberg live interview event. She dismissed suggestions that higher bond yields may be due to worries about rising U.S. deficits or worries about a recession. Yellen said that the U.S. debt servicing burden would be a "bigger challenge if the interest rate path stays higher." She has maintained that the real interest rate costs for the federal government have remained close to 1% of GDP, a manageable level. "The higher the interest rate path, the more that we need to do" on deficit reduction, she said.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company reported a third-quarter profit of 211 billion New Taiwan dollars ($6.69 billion) on Thursday as weak demand for consumer electronics persists. While that was the second straight quarter of profit declines, the world's largest contract chipmaker bested analyst expectations. That compares with TSMC's guidance for third-quarter revenue between $16.7 billion and $17.5 billion. The chip giant said that revenue increased 13.7% in the third quarter as compared to the second quarter. In the second quarter, the Taiwanese firm reported a decline in quarterly profit for the first time in four years due to a post-pandemic plunge in the demand for consumer electronics like smartphones and laptops.

The world's largest contract chipmaker is set to report net profit of T$195.9 billion ($6 billion) for July-September - its second straight quarter of profit decline, according to an LSEG SmartEstimate drawn from 19 analysts.
